dt

2. [15 points] Test the equation

x
(cos x + ln y)dx + ( + ey )dy = 0 ,
y
for exactness, and solve it, if it is exact.
3. [15 points] Solve

dy
= y + x2 y 2 , y(1) = 0 .
dx
Hint: start by dividing through by x.

4. [15 points] Consider the equation

dy

The gure below plots dy/dt vs y for a = [1, 0, 1].
[4 points] (a) For a = 1 determine the equilibria. Classify their stability.
[4 points] (b) For a = 0 determine the equilibria. Classify their stability.
[4 points] (c) For a = 1 determine the equilibria. Classify their stability.

6. [15 points] A spherical hailstone of constant density falls through a uniform mist of
water. Initially the radius of the hailstone is negligible: thus r = 0 when t = 0. After
that the hailstones radius grows according to r(t) = kt, where k is a constant, due to
accretion of freezing water on its spherical surface as it falls.
(a) [5 points] Find the mass m(t) of the hailstone.
(b) [10 points] Use Newtons second law in the form
]
d[
m(t)v(t) = mg ,
dt

to nd the hailstones velocity v(t) given that v(0) = 0.

7. [15 points] A ditch of right triangular cross section and length l as shown below is lled
with water to an initial depth of d0 . Assume that water seeps from the ditch to the
surrounding soil at a volume rate proportional to the area of contact between the water
and the soil. Label the proportionality factor as with units of volume/(time area).
(a) [10 points] Derive a dierential equation for the volume V (t) of water in the ditch.
(b) [5 points] Solve for the volume of water in the ditch, V (t).
