COURSE DESCRIPTION
The New Student Seminar for Graduate International Students (SAHS-GE.2003) meets once a week for eight
weeks and follows a syllabus that is structured with the following goals:
To explore the facilities, services, and resources available at New York University and in NYU
Steinhardt;
To introduce strategies for understanding and adapting to graduate study;
To ease transition to the U.S. by providing a space to explore the U.S. higher education system
and U.S. culture, values, customs, and traditions;
To foster a community that shares cultures, values, customs, traditions, new experiences, and
discoveries;
To foster a community that discusses questions, problems, and concerns.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
After completing the seminar, students will be able to:
Identify relevant academic policies, processes, and procedures related to graduate study;
Identify and apply strategies for academic success;
Identify appropriate campus resources and opportunities that contribute to their educational
experience, goals, and campus engagement;
Describe and demonstrate principles of academic integrity and responsible citizenship within and
beyond the campus community;

Articulate differences and similarities between previously experienced education system(s) and the
U.S. higher education system.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Required Attendance: Contact the instructor(s) in advance to make other arrangements if you are unable
to attend a class. More than two absences will result in a failing grade.
2. Email Account: Email is the official form of communication of New York University. Members of the
NYU community (staff, faculty, your instructors, etc.) will send messages to your NYU email address. Set
up your NYU email account (at home.nyu.edu) and use it in all NYU-related correspondence.
3. Grading: Pass/Fail. Students are expected to complete assignments, attend classes, and actively participate
in class discussions and activities in order to earn a passing grade.
4. Campus Event: During the eight weeks of seminar, attend at least two campus events and write a brief
(200 word) reflection (to be emailed to your instructor(s)). Events can be hosted by your department,
Steinhardt Student Affairs, or an NYU office (such as the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs
(CMEP), the Center for Spiritual Life, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ)
Student Center).
5. Other Assignments: Students are responsible for all assignments as assigned by instructors.

Tea at 3: Tea at 3: On this first day of finals, a representative from NYU
Counseling and Wellness Services will be available at Tea at 3 with tips and
techniques for managing stress as you finish out the semester. Enjoy free tea and
sweet treats at Tea at 3.
