Accept Bag (DCS)

This is a record of the airlines intention to take responsibility for a bag from the point at which it is accepted. This can be done at any
location at which an accepting agent and baggage handling facilities exist.

Accept Customer (DCS)

This is the state in which both the airline and customer have committed to the customers travel on a particular service. The customer
has fulfilled a number of necessary criteria to be accepted on to a flight i.e. they have produced valid documents and there is sufficient
capacity on the flight to be able to carry them, and the airline commits to carry them as long as they fulfill the remaining criteria e.g. turn
up at the gate on time. This is what we currently call check-in.
Unaccepted: The passenger has a confirmed booking, but as yet no acceptance has been attempted on the flight (e.g. they have not
yet arrived at the airport). In the airport environment this equates to not checked-in.
Fully Accepted: The passenger has a confirmed booking, and has been checked-in, i.e. allocated a seat on the plane, baggage
accepted and so forth.
Accepted to Standby (or On Standby): The passenger has a confirmed booking, but when acceptance to the flight was attempted
they could not be given a seat.
Not Traveling/Rejected: Customer has a confirmed booking but is no longer traveling. The booking status is left unchanged, but the
customer is removed from the seatmap. If at a later stage the customer decides to travel, then they still can but being accepted again.

other between IATA/ATA members and CRS suppliers and auxiliary service operators when making interline reservations. It is basically a
proprietary standard controlled by the airlines whereas EDIFACT standards are international, global, cross-industry standards.
Value assigned to a passenger that reflects its importance for the airline. A hierarchy of passengers will be computed according to this
value.
Aeronautical Information Service

Allocate Seat

Airline Link Control - This is the original (1960s) communication protocol developed for linking devices to a mainframe and is/was used
widely in the airline industry due to its efficient use of bandwidth.

Backups (and restores)

Backup copies of systems, applications, and data are essential to be able to restore systems or recover lost data.
Systems Management manages scheduling of backups.
Backups can be made to tapes and to disks, as well as a combination of these.

Baggage Pool

A baggage pool consists of two or more passengers that are accepted together with baggage. One of the passengers is made responsible for the
pool of bags.

Ballast Fuel

Fuel that is uplifted in order to keep the aircraft within its Centre of Gravity limits. The weight of this fuel is included in the Zero Fuel Weight and
cannot be used during flight.

Basic Index (DCS)

The known centre of gravity of an aircraft at Basic Weight.

Basic Weight (DCS)

The weight of the aircraft without crew, pantry, payload or fuel.

Basic Weight Carrier

(BWC)

Basic weight carriers start with the empty weight of the aircraft and add the weight and indices for pantry, crew and crew baggage. This calculation
arrives at the dry operating weight of the aircraft. (Additional equipment can be added by way of a service weight adjustment.)

Boarding (DCS)

Boarded: The passenger has a confirmed booking, has been fully accepted, and has physically entered the plane.
Provisionally boarded: process to track accepted customer prior to being boarded. In Altea, this is known as Customer Tracking.
Deboarded: The passenger has a confirmed booking, has been fully accepted, physically entered the plane, and then left the plane again. An
example of this would be where a plane leaves the aircraft stand, but before takeoff a technical problem is discovered and the plane must return to
the stand to be fixed. In this case the passengers are deboarded from the plane, and wait in the departure lounge until the plane is ready. They are
still fully accepted on the flight
Altea DCS functionality to monitor boarding of several flights at the same time from a central point

The browser program, e.g. Internet Explorer, itself is a client in its relationship with the server, which hosts the web files.

Clustering

A computer cluster is a group of tightly coupled computers that work together closely so that in many respects they can be viewed as though they
are a single computer.
The components of a cluster are commonly, but not always, connected to each other through fast local area networks.
Clusters are usually deployed to improve performance and/or availability over that provided by a single computer, while typically being much more
cost-effective than single computers of comparable speed or availability.

Ethernet

Ethernet is the most widely-installed local area network (LAN) technology. Specified in a standard, IEEE 802.3, Ethernet was originally developed by
Xerox from an earlier specification called Alohanet (for the Palo Alto Research Center Aloha network) and then developed further by Xerox, DEC,
and Intel. An Ethernet LAN typically uses coaxial cable or special grades of twisted pair wires. Ethernet is also used in wireless LANs.

The most commonly installed Ethernet systems are called 10BASE-T and provide transmission speeds up to 10 Mbps. Devices are connected to
the cable and compete for access using a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) protocol.
Fast Ethernet or 100BASE-T provides transmission speeds up to 100 megabits per second and is typically used for LAN backbone systems,
supporting workstations with 10BASE-T cards. Gigabit Ethernet provides an even higher level of backbone support at 1000 megabits per second (1
gigabit or 1 billion bits per second). 10-Gigabit Ethernet provides up to 10 billion bits per second.
Ethernet was named by Robert Metcalfe, one of its developers, for the passive substance called "luminiferous (light-transmitting) ether" that was
once thought to pervade the universe, carrying light throughout. Ethernet was so- named to describe the way that cabling, also a passive medium,
could similarly carry data everywhere throughout the network.

HACMP can run on up to 32 computers or nodes, each of which is either actively running an application (active) or waiting to take over should
another node fail (passive). Data on file systems can be shared between systems in the cluster.

HBA

A host bus adapter (HBA) is a circuit board and/or integrated circuit adapter that provides input/output (I/O) processing and physical connectivity
between a server and a storage device. Because the HBA relieves the host microprocessor of both data storage and retrieval tasks, it can improve
the server's performance time. An HBA and its associated disk subsystems are sometimes referred to as a disk channel.

LDAP

LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a software protocol for enabling anyone to locate organisations, individuals, and other resources
such as files and devices in a network, whether on the public Internet or on a corporate intranet.
LDAP is a "lightweight" (smaller amount of code) version of Directory Access Protocol (DAP), which is part of X.500, a standard for directory
services in a network. LDAP is lighter because in its initial version it did not include security features. LDAP originated at the University of Michigan
and has been endorsed by at least 40 companies.
Microsoft includes it as part of what it calls Active Directory in a number of products including Outlook Express. Novell's NetWare Directory Services
interoperates with LDAP. Cisco also supports it in its networking products.
In a network, a directory tells you where in the network something is located. On TCP/IP networks (including the Internet), the domain name system
(DNS) is the directory system used to relate the domain name to a specific network address (a unique location on the network). However, you may
not know the domain name. LDAP allows you to search for an individual without knowing where they're located (although additional information will
help with the search).

In NG Rego now sent by Inventory scheduling system to DCSStrine for aircraft registration number, e.g. G-BOAC or VH-OAG, sent to DC by
operational planning systems shortly before flight departure

REGO

Regrade

Rejected

Used to cover both upgrade and downgrade processing.

Downgrade: Move the customer from a seat in their (booked) entitled class of travel to one that is in a lower class.
Can also refer to the downgrade of a product where the product has tiers ie. Business Class customer entitled to the First Class Lounge is
downgraded to allow access to Club lounge (not necessarily downgrading the prime product (ie First to Business).
Upgrade: Move the customer from a seat in their (booked) entitled class of travel to one that is in a higher class.
Can also refer to the upgrade of a product where the product has tiers ie. Business Class customer entitled to the Club Lounge is upgraded to allow
access to First Class lounge (not necessarily upgrading the prime product (ie Business to First).
Involuntary Regrade: Includes Rebate customers being moved to eligible cabin, as well as customers being moved around the aircraft due to
oversales in one or more classes. Movement of commercials is required to get everyone a seat in a cabin.
Voluntary Regrade: This is where a customer has either bought an upgrade with frequent flyer miles, vouchers or some other non-monetary
system (and is therefore of benefit to the airline) or has chosen to travel in a lower cabin than that which they are booked. Commercial customers
who have been voluntarily downgraded, may be due a refund, but this is dependent upon fare type, form of payment etc.
This refers to an acceptance or check-in status. It means Not traveling. Instead of canceling the customers itinerary, an agent can set the
customer acceptance status to Rejected or Not traveling, so that their seat can be released back into the system. The customer is no longer part
of the seatmap.

Remain

There are customers who an airline will not wish to be considered for a product regrade, and these are detailed within their own look up table.
Likely customers would include:1) Deportees
2) UMs
3) YPs

RES

Reservations
Confirmed Booking: This means that the passenger has been allocated a space on the flight, and inventory decremented accordingly. This
does not mean the passenger has a definite seat on the flight.
Waitlist: If the passenger cannot be given a confirmed booking on a flight (i.e. no space left in inventory) then they may be placed on the
waitlist on the flight. If more inventory later becomes available the passenger may be moved onto the flight.

Reservations DCS

RIC

Request For Inventory Confirmation - This is a TIF for SBRs, which have not been fully confirmed by NGI because of link down or RTO at EOT.

Risks

Delivery Project Managers own project risk management and should outline their approach to risk management in the Management Plan.
This may include an initial risk workshop where business/technical/operational risks are 'brainstormed', assessed for probability and impact,

mitigations identified with owners and deadlines.

Mitigating actions should be included in project plans and reviewed regularly during project progress meetings - with the Risk Log being maintained
- closing risks and adding new if necessary.
Risks are distinct from issues - risks are what might happen, issues have actually arisen!

SAN

Storage Area Networks are created in order to allow information to be distributed across a network of computers, a SAN is a high-speed special
network of shared storage devices. SANs, which can be used with either a LAN (local-area network) or WAN (wide-area network), allow the
collective sub network of storage devices to be available to all servers on a network.
On a computer network, it's much more convenient and efficient to store information in one central location rather than on different servers spread
all over the place. And because servers that are connected to the network are simply gateways to the entire SAN sub network, additional storage
devices can be added at any time to increase the capacity of the SAN. Stored data does not reside directly on any of the networks servers, which
enables server power to be used for applications and releases the network capacity to the end user.

UNIX

Unix (often upper-case "UNIX," especially as an official trademark) is an operating system that originated at Bell Labs in 1969 as an interactive
time-sharing system. Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie are considered the inventors of Unix. The name was a pun based on an earlier system,
Multics (multiplex computer system).
In 1974, Unix became the first operating system written in the C language. Unix has evolved as a kind of large freeware product, with many
extensions and new ideas provided in a variety of versions of Unix by different companies, universities, and individuals.
Partly because it was not a proprietary operating system owned by any one of the leading computer companies and partly because it is written in a

standard language and embraced many popular ideas, Unix became the first open or standard operating system that could be improved or
enhanced by anyone.
The Open Group, an industry standards organisation, which certifies and brands Unix implementations, now owns the trademarked UNIX.
Unix operating systems are used in widely sold products from Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics, IBM, and a number of other companies.
The Unix environment and the client/server program model were important elements in the development of the Internet and the reshaping of
computing as centred in networks rather than in individual computers.
Linux, a Unix derivative available in both "free software" and commercial versions, is increasing in popularity as an alternative to proprietary
operating systems.
Unusable Fuel

Fuel that cannot be used during flight. The weight is included in the Zero Fuel Weight. Also referred to as Payload Fuel.

Unused Deadload Figure

Amount of underload available. Available amount of deadload weight, less the amount of any cabin loaded deadload.

URP

Unique Reference to Passenger. When a customer is through checked via IATCI, the responding system should include the URP in their DCRCKA
response. This can then be used as a unique identifier for any subsequent update/boarding pass reprint/offload request.
