Brazil is a federal republic


Government has three branches: executive, legislative, and judiciary
Military branches: Brazilian Army, Brazilian Navy, and Brazilian Air Force

Education System:

Contains three levels, primary, secondary, and tertiary


Primary is intended for ages 6-14 and lasts 9 years
Secondary is intended for ages 15-18 and lasts 3 years
Education is compulsory between ages 7 to 14
Education is free at state schools in Brazil
Children under 6 can attend educao infantil before starting elementary school
Primary education focuses on Portuguese, geography, history, math, science, arts, and

physical education
Secondary education focuses on the same subjects as primary but then adds on 2

languages (most often English and Spanish)


Professional training courses are sometimes added to secondary education
Each class is usually taught by one teacher
Tertiary education has competitive entrance exams
Brazil has over 2,600 state and private universities and colleges

Natural resources include: bauxite, gold, iron ore, manganese, nickel, phosphates,
platinum, tin, uranium, petroleum, hydropower, and timber

Brazil owns about 23 percent of the whole planets biological resources
Brazil has 55 thousand different species of plants

502 species of amphibians
468 species of reptiles
3000 species of fish
1573 species of birds
Brazil also has one of the most fertile soils on the planet
Brazil has the highest rate of deforestation worldwide
Brazil also is threatened by water pollution

Food Security:

Agriculture is a very important industry in Brazil


Brazils most significant products are coffee, soybeans, wheat, rice, corn, sugarcane,

cocoa, citrus, and beef


Top agricultural exports are coffee, soybeans, beef, sugar cane, ethanol, and chicken
There are two main agricultural areas: Southern Brazil and Northeast Brazil

Social and Economic Development:

Top exports include: Iron Ore, Soybeans, Crude Petroleum, Raw Sugar, and Ships
Top imports include: Refined Petroleum, Crude Petroleum, Cars, Vehicle Parts,

and Petroleum Gas


Top export destinations: China, United States, Argentina, Netherlands, and Japan
Top import destinations: China, United States, Argentina, Germany, and Nigeria
Most of the population is Roman Catholic
The most widely spoken language is Portuguese
Less common languages are Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, English, and a

number of minor Amerindian languages


Brazil has had a rapid fertility decline since the 60s and that has led to a number

of problems
The average age in Brazil is 31 years old
Brazil has a lot of racial diversity
Families in Brazil tend to be large
Middle and upper classes often have very little interaction with the lower classes
Class is determined by economic status
There is massive wealth inequality in Brazil
Soccer is very important in Brazil
