RECYCLING

Don't talk trash compost, recycle, create jobs instead these words were said by Gavin
Newsom, as he explains why we should recycle more and why governments are not doing
anything about it. I will be talking to you guys about an important topic that has been talked
about for many years, but until recently we have gain some importance to it because we have
suffered the consequences. These consequences include but not limited to increasing gas prices,
food cost sky rocketing, climate changes around the world, and that is Recycling. By recycling
we help out the environment, if we do not recycle it can really affect us in the long run; however
there is many ways in which we can recycle. So if we do our part in recycling we will not have to
face these problems in the future.
When we recycle we can save the planet by reducing the energy we use, if we conserve energy,
we can save and add power up to 1.4 million California homes that is said by Cal Recycle
Brochure thats a lot considering that everything that is being made now a days typically relies
on energy. The more energy we save helps give energy to other more important things. To
recycle it helps out the environment gradually because it saves water pollution by over 27
thousand tons of water which if youre not aware we need water to survive in the future, many
have thought to believe that we will not be at war for oil but for water because were polluting too
much and were not contributing in saving water which is the most important asset to any life
form. We can save over 14 million trees by simply recycling thats a lot of trees if you look at it. By
us cutting down trees every day its as if were smoking the earth up and leaving it to have lung
cancer because trees help filter the air we breathe which if not we will be inhaling carbon dioxide
which is deadly to us. Did you know that It takes nearly 500,000 trees to produce the weekly

Sunday newspaper, thats mind blowing considering really how many actually buy the
newspaper now a days. Deforestation is not the way to go, forestation is the action or process of
clearing out of forests (Webster). The American Lung Association estimates that more
than 64,000 Americans die prematurely each year due to inhalation of microscopic
particles that are legally emitted by Americans into the atmosphere from factories,
electric power plants, diesel engines(Johnson). We can change all that by recycling by

doing that we reduce air pollution by 165 thousand tons. It also helps reduce methane and carbon
dioxide which is equivalent to 3.8 million passenger cars of the high way which this helps the
polar ice caps that are melting which are causing rise in sea levels warming in the water which
creates stronger tsunamis and typhoons, it also helps protect the earth ozone layers which is
basically like a sun screen layer around the planet which protects us from UV rays. Without the
layer we will not be able to step outside and enjoy the beautiful weather and sun that we have.
Cal RECYCLE states if recycling eliminates the need to build landfills, saves energy, reduces
greenhouse gas emissions, reduces air pollution and water pollution, conserves forests, and has
twice the economic impact of disposal while generating $10 billion worth of taxable economic
activity each year
Recycling is good for the environment and good for the Economy. Mr. Newsom also states in his
speech that When we turn food scraps, yard trimmings and even used, foodsoiled paper into compost, which some cities such as San Francisco and Los
Angeles are now doing on a large scale, and apply it to farms, we replenish

depleted soil with the nutrients and carbon that healthy plants desperately
need. Equally important for the future of our green economy is that
recycling and composting means jobs. The Institute for Local Self Reliance reports

that every additional 10,000 tons recycled translates into 10 new frontline
jobs and 25 new jobs in recycling-based manufacturing. Landfilling or
incinerating those tons creates only one job (Newsom). This can help not
only us financially but help us in our environment.
If we do not recycle, we will in the future be suffering and paying the consequences. We
already have noticed the global climate changes when its supposed to be hot its cold when its
supposed to be cold its hot these are changes that we cause the planet to do all by not recycling
and doing our part in saying the environment imagine the lives that could have been saved if we
would have started to recycle since we first times we started to notice the changes, a lot of things
will have been different and a lot of lives would not have been lost. By us not recycling we could
cause diseases to spread more rapidly and we would not find the cure to the disease because the
landfills were creating in the rainforest and the cutting down of trees because all the medicines
that have been found were found in the rain forest from rare plants that scientist find. If we keep
this up our chances of finding the cure of cancer, aids and other deadly diseases can be blown
away. Were devouring of natural resources at a high level every year the more we do not
recycle the more resources we use up to create up new things which causes the more burning of
our fossil fuels its more expensive to build up something then simply reusing something or
recycling it in the product. More and more companies every year are trying to be more
conservative and more of an eco-friendly type of business. We see in impact on our wallets by
not helping out in recycling because products are skyrocketing higher every year a perfectly
good example is gas, gas is becoming more expensive every year and by that producers are being
forced to put higher prices in their good just because the cost of transporting their good is being
too expensive. So thus by us not recycling and doing at least something of being more

conservative we will slowly but surely see changes in the environment and how we will be
regretting our mistakes in the future.
A way that we can help and save our environment and the future and in the future reduce
the cost of products and oil prices is simple, if we start to recycle as a group we can all do a part
to help out. One way to recycle is by just throwing the thrash in the trash bin anything that
cannot be recycled, also by separating the things that are recyclable and putting it in the recycle
bins which the city will recycle all the products if we do not do that then were harming the
environment cause basically about 80 percent of the thrash can be recycled. Other ways of
helping out would be to switch to a more eco-friendly type of environment at home by switching
to a more efficient light bulb that will save you power, dont let the water running when youre
brushing your teeth, when drying your wash clothes air drying so you can conserve gas and or
your energy at home. When going to the store ask the clerk to use as little of plastics bags as he
or she can use and if items dont necessarily need to be bagged do not bag them. Recycle your
cans and plastic bottles by taking them to a recycling center they will pay you to take them
plastic and aluminum. Do not liter on the streets because the trash travels down the sewer pipes
and into the ocean which harms the sea life which we consume and consequently it harms us.
Recycle as much paper as you can print paper on both sides to conserve paper, an example will
be if youre reading a magazine or newspaper and your done dont use throw it away hand it to
another person for them to read it as well you will save paper and you will save them money.
Change over to rechargeable batteries that way you do not have to buy batteries constantly. If
you even contribute a little you will have an impact on the environment. You may also help out a
lot by spreading the word of how recycling can save the planet.

At my work were going for a more eco-friendly type of work place in our break room we
have bins were we place cans and plastic bottles we use eco-friendly hand soap, the maintenance
crew use eco-friendly chemicals that would harm others, our plastic bags are less thick their now
more thin and more durable, they switched out all the light bulbs to a more conservative way of
saving energy, we have a bin were we condense all the cardboard witch gets sent to be recycled
as well as the plastic we use and we also spread the word of how everyone should go green.
Therefore we should all contribute to help out our environment because we are all living
for the present, so we should also be looking out for the future because our childrens children
will have to face the consequences. So I tell you spread the word of recycling and ultimately be
eco-friendly and GO GREEN.
