theauthorityoftheirpositionsandhavingnoreasontofearabacklash:
theHolyProphets(s)whitecomplexionhadatouchofrednessandtherewasalusterinitHencetheImamshavestated
thatifsomeonesaysthattheHolyProphets(s)complexionwasblack,wewillissueafatwaofinfidelity(kufr)forhim
becauseheinsultedanddisparagedtheHolyProphet(s)andtheinsultinganddisparagingofaprophetamountsto

Thefactofthematteris,however,thecoloroftheprophets,includingandespeciallyProphetMuhammad,absolutelyDIDmatterin
premodernIslam.Indeed,itwasanorthodoxissueinClassicalIslam,atleastaccordingtotheClassicalArabictextualtradition.

IbnUmarnarrated:theProphet(s)said:[DuringmyAscensiontoHeaven]IsawMoses,Jesus,andAbraham.Jesuswas
whiteskinned(ahmar),curlyhairedwithabroadchestMoseswasblackskinned(adam),straighthairedandtallasifhe
wasfromthepeopleofalZutt.
Onthisaccountitispopularlyacceptedthat,whileMoseswasblackskinned,Jesuswaswhiteskinned.However,Bukharifollows
thishadithwithanotherreport(#649,650)thatinsiststhatthiscolorallocation(forJesus)iserroneous:
Salimnarratedfromhisfather:No,ByAllah,theProphet(s)didnotsaythatJesuswaswhiteskinnedbutsaid:WhileIwas
asleepcircumambulatingtheKaba(inmydream),suddenlyIsawablackskinnedman(rajuladam)withstraighthair
walkingbetweentwomen,andwaterdrippingfromhishead.Iaskedwhohewas,andthemensaidheistheSonofMary
(Jesus).ThenIlookedbehindandsawawhiteskinnedman(rajulahmar),fat,curlyhairedandblindintherighteyewhich
lookedlikeabulginggrape.Iaskedwhomhewasandtheysaid,ThisisalDajjal.
Inotherwords,thewhiteskinnedmanseeninProphetMuhammadsvisionwasnotJesus,whowasseenasablackskinnedman,
butalDajjal.Thereisevenavariantofthishadith,reportedforexamplebyAliQawialHarawi(d.1605)inhiscommentaryonal
TirmidhisfamousalShamailalMuhammadiyah,accordingtowhichMuhammadsaidregardingJesus:Isawablackskinned
man(rajuladam),thebestonecanseeamongblackskinnedmen.Thus,JesusandMoseswouldhavebeenblackskinnedmen.
Whatisimportanthere,however,isthatinthismostorthodoxpieceofMuslimliteraturebesidestheQuran,alBukharisSahih,the
skincoloroftheprophetsJesusandMosesarefreelydiscussedanddebated.Onemightask:ifitwasperfectlyIslamicforal
BukharitodiscussthecoloroftheProphetsdiscussions,mindyou,attributedtotheProphetandsomeofhiskeyCompanions
howdiditbecomeunIslamictodiscussthesematterstoday?
ButJesusandMosesarenotMuhammadinIslamictradition,despitetheclaimbythissametraditionthatalloftheprophetsare
equal.InIslamictraditiontheProphetMuhammadisenvelopedinarobeofsacralityandholinessthatnootherProphetshares.But
thisheightenedsacrednessofMuhammaddidnotmakehimlesslikelytobethetopicofdiscussionsaboutsuchmundanematters
asskincolor.Onthecontrary,detaileddiscussionofMuhammadsphysicalappearance,includinghisskincolor,isfoundinmostof
themostorthodoxliteraturesSunniandShiitealike.IbnSad(d.845),forexample,inhisfamousandimportantKibabaltabaqat
alkabir,devotestwelvepagestoachapterentitled,[Reports]MentioningtheDescriptionofthePhysicalBodyoftheMessenger
ofGod(SAWS).ThischapterincludestwelvehadithsreportingontheallegedcomplexionoftheProphet.

TheMessengerofAllahwasofmediumstature,neithertallnorshort,[with]abeautiful,darkbrowncomplexionedbody
(hasanaljismasmarallawn).Hishairwasneithercurlynorcompletelystraightandwhenhewalkedheleantforward.

YazidalFarisisaid:IsawtheMessengerofGod(s)inadreamduringthetimeIbnAbbas[wasgovernor]overBasra.I
saidtoIbnAbbas:IsawtheMessengerofAllah(s)inadream.IbnAbbassaid:Verily,theMessengerusedtosay,Satan
cannotassumemyform,sohewhosawmeinadream,surelyhadavisionofme.Canyoudescribetomewhatyousaw?
[Yazid]said:Yes,I[will]describe[him].Hewasamanbetweentwomen.Hisbodyandfleshwerebrownandblemishfree
withasheen(asmarilaalbayad),smiling,eyeswithcollyrium,featuresofhisfacebeautiful.Hisbeardwasthickfromthis
endtothat,and(theman)pointedtohistwotempleswithhishands.Itwassothickthatitcoveredhisneck.Thereupon
IbnAbbassaid:Hadyouseenhimwhileawake,youcouldnothavedescribedhimbetterthanthis.
Accordingtothesereports,whichfreelydiscusstheProphetsskincolor,theProphetscomplexionwasdarkbrown.IbnSad
reportsanotherveryinterestingreportontheauthorityalZubayrwhoreportedontheauthorityofIbrahim:
TheMessengerofAllah(s)stretchedhisleftfoot,suchthattheblacknessofitsexposedpart(zahiruhaaswad)was
visible.(Kitabaltabaqatalkabir,I/i,127)
AlTirmidhireportsinhisalShamailalMuhammadiyyah(#1),ontheauthorityofAnasb.Malik,
TheMessengerofAllah(s)wasneithertall,suchthathewouldstandout,norwasheshort.Hewasnotalbinowhite(al
abyadalamhaq),norwashedeepblack(adam).Hishairwasneitherverycurlynorcompletelystraight.Allah
commissionedhimtowardstheendofhisfortiethyear.HeremainedinMeccafortenyearsandinMedinafortenyears.
Allahcausedhimtopassawayattheturnofhissixtiethyearandtherewasnotfoundonhisheadandbeard[asmuchas]
twentywhitehairs.
ThisreportdoesnotstandincontradictiontotheotherreportsaccordingtowhichtheProphetwasdarkbrownskinned,
becauseasmarisnotadam.AccordingtoclassificationsoftheArabiclinguistssuchalThalabi,adamisamoreexcessive
blacknessthanasmar.WhatisthereforedeniedhereisthatMuhammadwasoneoftheexcessivelyblackArabs,liketheBanu
Sulaymmaybe.
BukharireportsthefollowinginhisSahih(Volume4,Book56,Number744):
NarratedIsma'ilb.AbiKhalid:IheardAbuJuhayfasaying,"IsawtheProphet,andAlHasanb.Aliresembledhim."Isaidto
AbuJuhaifa,"Describehimforme."Hesaid,"Hewasabyadandhisbeardwasblackwithsomewhitehair.Hepromisedto
giveus13youngshecamels,butheexpiredbeforewecouldgetthem."
Thisreportandsimilaroneshavecausednolimitoftroubleformoderns.ThetermusedheretodescribetheProphetscomplexion
isabyad.Thistermusuallymeanswhiteincontextsnotrelatedtohumancomplexion.Itisthetermnormallyusedtodenotethe
whitenessofsuchobjectsasmilk,teeth,ect.However,ClassicalArabichasalinguisticphenomenoncalledaladdad,whichwecall
antiphrasistoday,inwhichincertaincontextsawordsignifiesitslexicalopposite.Abyadistheclassicalexampleofthis
phenomenon.ThusA.Morabia,writingintheEncyclopediaofIslam(s.v.Lawn),notes:

"OneofthemoststrikingmanifestationsofthesymbolicconnotationsofcoloursamongtheArabs,isthephenomenonof
opposites(aladdad).Wehaveseen,instudyingthesemanticvalueofcertainadjectivesofcolour,thattheywere
sometimescapableofembracingtwodiametricallyoppositemeanings.Thisphenomenonisparticularlytobenotedinthe
caseofwhiteandblack...Tosignifywine,theArabsusedanumberofeuphemismsofthetype'thefairdrink','thegolden
one',etc...Eventoday,incertainpartsoftheOrientandtheMaghrib,inordertoavoidpronouncingtheword
'black'...oppositesareused.InMorrocco,alabyadsometimesdenotestarorcoal."
Inthecontextofhumancomplexions,thetermabyadassumesitsdiddsenseandmeansblack.ButinClassicalArabicthereare
severaldistinctblacknessessorshadesofblacknessaspointedoutbybothalThalabbinhisFiqhallugha[8282]aswellas
alAsyutiinhisJawhiraluqudwamunalqudtwalmuwaqqinwalshuhd[II:574].Abyad/bayadisaparticularshadeor
typeofblackness.AccordingtotheimportantSyrianhadithscholarandhistorianofIslam,ShmsalDnAb`AbdAllhalDhahab
(d.1348),inhisSiyaralmalnubal[II:168]:
WhenArabssay,soandsoiswhite(abyad),theymeanagoldenbrowncomplexionwithablackappearance(alhintal
lawnbihilyasud).LikethecomplexionofthepeopleofIndia,brownandblack(asmarwadam),i.e.aclear,refined
blackness(sawadaltakrr).
Thismeansthatwhenabyadisusedtodescribethehumancomplexion,itmeansarefinedblackcomplexion[freeofblemishes]
withagoldenbrownhue.Thisgoldenbrownhueisnodoubtduetotheluminosityorglowthatisalsoimpliedbythetermabyad:the
glossandsheen(saqalawasafa)thatsitsonandthusinteractswitharefinedblackcomplexion.Thismostpopulardescriptionof
theProphetasabyadisthusconsistentwiththeabovereportsaccordingtowhichtheProphethadadarkbrowncomplexion.
Abyad/bayadasadescriptionofhumancomplexionistobedistinguishedfromahmar,red,whichalsohasadiddsensewhen
usedofhumancomplexions.Thoughredisadarkcolor,whenusedofhumancomplexionitmeanswhiteskinnedorfairskinned.
IbnManzur[LisanalarabIV:209,210]notes:
TheArabsdontsayamaniswhite[or:whiteman,rajulabyad]duetoawhitecomplexion.Rather,whiteness[alabyad]
withthemmeansanexternalappearancethatisfreefromblemish[alzahiralnaqiminaluqub]whentheymeanawhite
complexiontheysayred(ahmar)whentheArabssay,soandsoiswhite(abyadbayad),they[only]meananoble
character(alkaramfilakhlaq),notskincolor.Itiswhentheysaysoandsoisred(ahmarhamra)thattheymeanwhite
skin.AndtheArabsattributewhiteskintotheslaves.
Red(alhamra)referstononArabsduetotheirfaircomplexionwhichpredominatesamongthem.AndtheArabsusedto
sayaboutthenonArabswithwhomwhiteskinwascharacteristic,suchastheRomans,Persians,andtheirneighbors:
Theyareredskinned(alhamra)alhamrameansthePersiansandRomansAndtheArabsattributewhiteskintothe
slaves.
ThevastmajorityofthereportsintheClassicalcollectionsdescribetheProphetMuhammadasblack/brownskinned
(abyad/asmar).Thereareafewreports,however,generatednodoubtbynonArabconvertstoIslamlikethePersians,which

The Arabic is CLEAR/MUBEEN .....ADAM and like the ppl of Zutt...thanks for daleel and

Its a compelling read and shows great research, but it should be made abundantly clear that the
discussionontheskincolouroftheProphet(pbuh)shouldnothaveanybearingonmattersoffaith,I
wish these racial bigots would come with a proper researched reply instead of these spurious
emotional arguments because they have been brainwashed all of their life, for me it doesnt really
matterifheisblackorwhite,butwhatIneedisanaccuratehistoricaldescription.
