PURPOSE: Finding the percentage by mass of oxygen released by the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.
MATERIALS:
2 15 cm test tubes
1 small beaker
MnO2
3% solution of H2O2
matches
balance
goggles
splint
SAFETY:
1. Wear safety goggles at all times. 2. Do not ingest chemicals. 3. Do not touch chemicals.
PROCEDURE:
A. Place two 15-centimeter test tubes in a small beaker.
B. Place the beaker on a balance.
C. Record the mass of the beaker and test tubes in the
observations column (label what you are recording and
include units).
CAUTION: Wear safety goggles when doing this activity.
D. Add manganese dioxide (MnO2) to a depth of about
1 cm to one of the test tubes.
E. Determine the mass of the beaker, test tubes, and
manganese dioxide on the balance.
F. Record the mass in the observations column (label what
you are recording and include units).
G. Add a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to a
depth of about 2.5 cm to the other test tube.
H. Determine the mass of the beaker, test tubes, manganese
dioxide, and hydrogen peroxide on the balance.
I. Record mass in the observations column (label what you
are recording and include units).
J. Pour the hydrogen peroxide into the test tube containing
the manganese dioxide.
K. Place the emptied test tube back in the beaker.
L. After about a minute, hold a glowing splint near the mouth
of the test tube containing the hydrogen peroxide and manganese
dioxide.
M. Record all observations in the observations column.
N. After the bubbling has stopped, wait one minute and then
determine the mass of the beaker, test tubes, and contents.
O. Record the mass (label what you are recording and include
units) in the observations column.
OBSERVATIONS:
A. mass of beaker + test tubes = ______ g
CALCULATIONS:
1. Calculate the amount of hydrogen peroxide used in this experiment then multiply that amount by 3%. This
is the mass of hydrogen peroxide used. (Use the information in your observations letters C and B.)
2. Calculate the mass of oxygen released during the reaction (basically subtract the total masses before and
after the reaction of beaker and test tubes).
3. From the results of this experiment, find the percentage of oxygen released from hydrogen peroxide using
the answers from #1 and #2 and the percent composition formula. (10 Kudos for calculating this correctly).
A compound with an empirical formula of C2OH4 and a molar mass of 88 grams per mole.
A compound with an empirical formula of C4H4O and a molar mass of 136 grams per mole.
A compound with an empirical formula of CFBrO and a molar mass of 254.7 grams per mole.
A compound with an empirical formula of C2H8N and a molar mass of 46 grams per mole.
15. When 2.5000 g of an oxide of mercury, (HgxOy) is decomposed into the elements by heating, 2.405 g of
mercury are produced. Calculate the empirical formula.
