InstallingUbuntutoanexternalharddriveorUSBmemorystickisaverysafewaytoinstallUbuntu.If
youareworriedaboutchangesbeingmadetoyourcomputer,thisisthemethodforyou.Your
computerwillremainunchangedandwithouttheUsbinserted,itwillloadyouroperatingsystemas
normal.WhenyouconnectandbootfromtheUSBdriveyouwillbegiventhechoicetoloadUbuntuor
yourusualoperatingsystem.
WhatweneedtoinstallUbuntutoaUSBdriveisacomputer,anUbuntuliveCD/USB,andaUSB
drive.8GBistheminimumrecommendedsizeforafunctionalanduseablesystem(although4GBis
theminimum).Werecommendanexternalharddiskandatleast20GB.
ItisrecommendedtopartitionyourUSBdrive,butnotnecessary,assumingyouhave2GBRAMor

'BIOS'.Itwilltakeacoupleofminutestoloadandyouwillbepresentedwithtwochoices.'TryUbuntu'
or'InstallUbuntu',youshouldselect'InstallUbuntu'Youwillthenbepresentedwithanumberof
options.Youneedtoselectthebottomoption'SomethingElse'.
Thiswillbringyoutothepartitioningmenu.YourPrimaryharddrivewillbelistedas'Sda'followedby
anypartitionsthatareonitlikeSda1orSda2.Belowthiswillbeyourusbdrive,itwillbelistedas
'Sdb'.Clickon'Sdb1'whichistheonlypartitiononthedriveandselect'change'.
Youneedtoselect'usethispartitionasExt4FileSystem'(somedistributionssuchasMintreqiure
youtomanuallyselect'format'atthispoint).Thenyouneedtosetthe'mountpoint'as'/'whichisthe
rootfilesystemandclickOK.Youwillbetakenbacktothepreviousmenuandthatpartitionwillhave
aticknexttoit.Nowclickon'Sdb'justabovethatpartition,thisselectsitasthedevicetoinstallto.
Nowjustbelowisanoptionforwherethebootloaderistobeinstalled.ItisVERYIMPORTANTthat
youCHANGETHISOPTION.THEBOOTLOADERMUSTBEINSTALLEDTOYOURDEVICE
listedas'/dev/Sdb'.Ifyoudonotdothisthebootloaderwillbeinstalledtoyourinternaldrive.Youare
nowreadytoinstalltoyourexternaldevice,simplyclick'Install'.
Youwillneedtoanswerafewsimplequestionslike'name'and'createpassword',thenyoucansit
backandrelax.
