Finals Quiz in Transport Phenomena.

After reading the journal articles provided, answer the following questions in a short bond paper
using engineering lettering. Deadline is on May 11, 2015, 4:30pm. Your answers should have
references if applicable, follow APA format for referencing, and have a list of references used in
your answers.
Questions for Article 1 (Nandakumar et al.)
1.) Should the authors model blood as a shear thinning (dilatant) fluid rather than a
viscoelastic, time-dependent fluid as it is in reality (blood clots after a certain amount of
time)? Would there be any significant difference if they were to model it as a timedependent fluid?
2.) Derive equations (16) and (17)
3.) Were there any significant differences between the results of blood modeled as a shear
thinning and Newtonian fluid? Confirm using ANOVA with a confidence interval of 95% at
figures 7, 8, and 9. Download plot digitizer (plotdigitizer.sourceforge.net) to obtain exact
numerical values from the plot.
4.) What is Wormersley number? What are the conditions to characterize flow based on the
Wormersley number? How is it applicable to the paper?
5.) How is stenosis being detected in aortic blood flow? What are the conditions (in terms of
fluid mechanics perspective) to be evaluated that the patient has a stenosis?
Questions for Article 2 (Cervantes et al.,)
1.) Derive equation (2)
2.) Estimate the heat loss to the environment using the correlations given in the paper. Use
settings applicable to the Philippines (i.e. Temperature etc.)
3.) Comment on the probe locations on the renal parenchyma. What are the possible errors on
the placement of thermocouples for temperature measurement?
4.) Calculate the time required to cool the kidney of an average Filipino adult (30-50 y/o) from
physiologic conditions to 20C using the device.
5.) Is there any improvement that you could include in the design? State at least 5 design
revisions that the author could consider.
Questions for Article 3 (Curcuo et al.,)
1.) Assuming no reaction occurs, derive the oxygen concentration profile through the
thickness of the synthetic polymeric scaffold from the paper using equation (1). Compare
it to figure 4, and explain the difference between diffusion only and diffusion with reaction.
Your model should behave similarly to the numerical solution
2.) Determine the time that the system had achieved steady state condition.
3.) Would the increase in cell seeding density increase or decrease oxygenation through the
scaffold? Explain.
4.) What would be the effect of the variations in oxygen distribution throughout the scaffold
affect the oxygen uptake rate of the cells and the overall generation of the tissueengineered trachea?
5.) Evaluate the ways to increase oxygen distribution on the scaffold and how to minimize the
variations along the scaffolds dimensions.
