- Policy
In 1960, Ivory Coast gained independence from France under the leadership of
Felix Houphouet-Boigny. From that date, Ivory Coast stood as the most
prosperous former French colony on West Africa, and it constituted 40% of total
exports of the region. However, in the last decade it has been turbulent
political situation. After the 1999 coup led to the division of the country into
two zones, one of which is controlled by rebels. In 2007 the peace agreement
in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) which marked the end of the crisis is signed.
Currently, Cte d'Ivoire has a multiparty system with freedom of association
and expression, based on the Constitution adopted by referendum in July 2000.
The President is elected by universal suffrage for a period of five years, which
may mandate be renewed once.
The President appoints the Prime Minister who coordinates government.
Members of the unicameral parliament, the National Assembly, a total of 225
parliamentarians elected by universal suffrage every five years. This deadline

was not met, since the elections have been postponed several times since late
2009, because, according to the Ivorian authorities, to problems in the
preparation of the electoral roll. The elections were finally held in November
2010 with controversial results due to the proclamation of the two main
candidates as presidents. The conflict is still under resolution.
The country is divided politically into 19 regions and sub divided into 58
departments.
Overall, the security situation has gradually improved. Refugees and internally
displaced persons are returning, and Costa was selected as one of three pilot
countries for the decision of the Secretary General UN Policy Committee on
durable solutions, in which the UN will outline risk groups and displaced
populations within the country and investigate long-term solutions

ECONOMIC
The Ivorian economy is mainly agricultural sector, which encompasses 60% of
the workforce
Most of the labor force in Ivory Coast is linked to agriculture and forestry.
The main crops are coffee, cocoa, sugar cane, bananas, cotton and pineapple
(pineapple). Ivory Coast is one of the world's leading producers of cocoa and
coffee (1.40 million t and 166,200 t respectively in 2006). Other crops mostly
for local consumption, are manioc, rice, maize, millet, groundnuts (peanuts)
and sweet potato.
Wood production is of great economic importance in the country. Among the
most important export timbers are mahogany, iroko, the SIPO, the obeche and
makore. Are produced annually (2006 figures) about 10.1 million cubic meters
of wood. Fishing takes place along the 515 km of coastline; annual catches
amounted to 55 866 tonnes.
The oil fields were discovered off the coast in 1977 and started its operation in
1980, reaching 12 million barrels per year in 2004. Ivory Coast also produces
about 600,000 metric carats of diamonds each year. The most important
industries are food processing plants, sawmills, textile mills, oil refineries,
automobile assembly plants and bicycles, and the production of veneer,
furniture, cement, shoes, steel containers and plates aluminum.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL

Ivory Coast is a socially complex country. With over 20 million inhabitants, it is


estimated that approximately five million are immigrants from Burkina Faso
and Malian origin, and there are currently over 50 different local ethnic groups
surveyed, divided into four groups, the Akan, the Voltaiques, the Mande and
Krous. Nearly 4 million people are concentrated in Abidjan, the most populous
city, followed by Yamoussoukro, Bouak and San Pedro. As for religion, the
population living in the northern half of the country is predominantly Muslim
(38.6%), and that for the largely Christian southern half (32.8%), although
tribal religions predomian over whole territory (28.6%).

seven major ethnic groups, as the basis of common cultural and historical

Orange Cte d'Ivoire, MTN, Moov, Koz and Green, but the market leader is
Orange, with over 4 million users. MTN follows with over 3.5 million users and
the third is Moov, with over 1.8 million users.
Internet
Ivory Coast recorded a total of 660,000 Internet users. 9 operators are licensed
to provide the service: Notice, MTN, AfricaOnline, Kite, Global Access, GlobexCI, Powerline and Telecom AFRIPA

Green Cross assesses the environmental conditions of conflict and disasters
as they happen.

With the help of several national offices of Green Cross, Green Cross
International has recently committed to Ivory Coast, Pakistan and Lebanon for
conducting environmental assessments where economic, social and
environmental rehabilitation programs have been consistently based on these
assessments.
They are currently involved in projects related to assessments of environmental
situation in the country. In 2004, they developed an analytical study on
desertification in the country and an environmental diagnosis of their water
plans. The conclusions of these studies, as well as the results of opinion polls
conducted by Green Cross Ivory Coast has led to the creation of the Emergency
Restoration after armed conflicts in the country.

LEGAL
Ivory Coast has an investment code, designed to boost private sector
investment and increase domestic production. It includes incentives such as
tax exemptions for large investments and businesses which are located outside
Abidjan and other urban industrial areas.

The local government wants to implement measures to improve technology
and design of new areas to increase agricultural production by 50% by 2015.

the treatment of palm oil and rubber, and has already increased acreage by
300,000 hectares.
CONSTRUCTION
The construction and public works, although they suffered a slight slowdown in
2009 is expected to recover the high growth rates of previous years, thanks to
strong demand for residential construction in Abidjan.
The real estate sector is also undergoing a period of revitalization after the
return of foreign investors, traditionally European and Lebanese origin, and the

forecast increase in production of natural gas and oil, pointing to the need for
increased storage capacity and distribution distribuirle across the country and
elsewhere in the region.
TOURISM

The beauty of the country and its 500 km of coastline give Ivory Coast a great
potential to develop tourism in an orderly manner, whether of nature tourism,
culture, sun and beach or sports.
Like other industries, tourism was affected by the internal crisis in 2002, when
all tourism projects stopped. Since 2007, tourism has started to recover,
especially business tourism.
There are private investment projects aimed at meeting the demand for highclass tourists, already build luxury hotels and golf courses in the coastal zone.
The country offers 8 wildlife reserves, a good claim for ecotourism and
adventure tourism
