New note 1648864

June 2015

1. Short Definition
Licensing of adapters for SAP NetWeaver Exchange Infrastructure (SAP NetWeaver XI) 3.00 / SAP
NetWeaver Process Integration (SAP NetWeaver PI) 7.00 or higher release can be licensed based on the
request volume in gigabytes (GB) per month processed by the particular adapter. The size of the payload is
determined in the integration server. Afterwards, the sender and receiver systems are aggregated and
divided into the individual adapter types.

2. Description of Metric
The request size is determined by the payload size of each request that is successfully processed by the
integration server (IS) and, in synchronous cases, the size of the response. This also includes the
attachments. Mapping steps can cause the request size to vary significantly during the processing of the
message in the integration server.
That is why four measurements are made while processing the message:

Request payload size before mapping

Request payload size after mapping
Response payload size before mapping
Response payload size after mapping

(Pl_Req)
(Pl_Req_Map)
(Pl_Resp)
(Pl_Resp_Map)

The payload size of the request is then calculated as:

Payload size (request) = max [Pl_Req, Pl_Req_Map] + max [Pl_Resp, Pl_Resp_Map]

The result of the calculation in bytes is stored in raw data tables. The raw data is then aggregated according
to
Sender system
Receiver system
Processing mode (synchronous/asynchronous)
The aggregates are then stored in separate tables. The aggregation takes place at different steps, on an
hourly, daily, and monthly basis.

3. Definition of objects
The request size processed using a particular adapter is determined by the payload size of an XI/PI request
in the integration server at the time of the measurement. The size of the request is measured four times
while the request is processed in the integration server, see Error! Reference source not found. Error!
Reference source not found.. The measured values are stored in the XI/PI message object. After the
request has been successfully sent using the aforementioned metric, the measured values are combined to
give the total value of the payload size. These values are then saved specifically for each adapter and used
for the system measurement.
The measured payload for XI/PI Adapters will be calculated in Megabyte (MB)

The following adapters are relevant for measurement. However, the price-relevant metric is not the given
data volume. This serves as an indication only. If a measured value is greater than 0, these adapters are
considered to be in active use.

Threshold value: The measurement function described serves only to ascertain whether the product is in use or not. If the
threshold is exceeded, the engine is deemed in use.

The PI/XI-Base Engine will be measured via Unit IDs 2320 - 2323.
If the measurement log does not list all adapters used, please implement note 1648864.
5. Information on Measurement Availability
Measurement results are only displayed in the log if both the software component SAP_BASIS and the
application are at the required Support Package (SP) level.
The adapters can only be measured with SAP NetWeaver XI 3.0 or later. For technical reasons, earlier
releases cannot be measured.
