Budget Draws Election Battle Lines
THE CONSERVATIVE Party
attacked the “empty” budget of
Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s
ruling Labour Party last month,
drawing up the battle lines for a
looming national election around
the weak British economy.
The government’s annual spending
plan, unveiled March 24, is even more of
a political football than usual this year,
kicking off a high-stakes game that could
end with Labour’s exit from power after
13 years.
The Conservatives allege that the
budget offers no fixes to the mismanage-
ment of the finances that it claims led to
the country’s current economic malaise,
while Labour counters that the opposition

Conservative economy spokesman
George Osborne denounced the measures
as little more than smoke and mirrors, al-
leging that the budget in fact included a tax
rise by stealth for 30 million workers by
freezing the income bands that determine
the levels of tax payable.
Osborne, who has pledged to announce
another budget within 50 days if the Con-
servatives win the election, said that Dar-
ling had failed to set out a credible strategy
for cutting the nation’s record debt.
Darling hit back, accusing the Tories of
being “conspicuously silent” on their own
plans for taxes and spending cuts. Osborne
said his party would set out details before
the election.

BBC Cuts Radio Stations,
Web Pages To Trim Costs

THE venerable BBC is overhauling its do-
mestic coverage, shedding radio stations,
slicing the number of its Web pages by half
and moving out of magazines.
The BBC says it wants to focus on qual-
ity over quantity, but commentators say the
move aims to placate critics who allege the
state-sponsored media giant is suffocating
its private rivals.
Whatever the case, the BBC’s foreign
audience – from Afghan listeners of BBC
Pashto to American fans of Antiques
Roadshow – aren’t likely to see much in
the way of changes. And at a time when
US media organizations such as ABC
have promised massive layoffs in their
news operations, the nearly 90-year-old
broadcaster says it’s putting extra money
into its journalism.
The broadcaster has a huge presence in
Britain, running four main television chan-
nels, a popular news Web site, 10 national
radio stations, 40 local stations, on top of
its respected 24-hour news channel, chil-
dren’s channel CBeebies, a parliamentary
television channel and other media.

fees paid by British consumers to subsi-
dize its £3.5bn budget, and Britons often
complain that the mandatory fee is too
high – £142.50 per year per household for
a color TV.
Recent criticism has focused on the
hefty salaries paid to top executives and
leading BBC presenters as well as the
costly renovation of its Broadcasting
House offices in central London.
“The general sense is that the BBC is
too big ... that has been a commonplace
view for quite a while,” media consultant
Steve Hewlett said.
The broadcaster’s plans include cutting
the 6 Music station, aimed at alternative
music listeners, and the Asian Network,
geared toward Britons of south Asian
descent, as well as halving the number of
Web pages it hosts.
Spending on Web content will be cut
by 25 percent, while physical media, such
as the BBC’s stable of a dozen-plus maga-
zines, may also be affected.

Scotland In September
POPE BENEDICT XVI will visit
Scotland and England in September in
a four-day visit combining preaching
and diplomacy, Buckingham Palace
announced last month.
British officials described it as an
unprecedented “papal visit with the
status of a state visit,” though some
of the usual trappings laid on for a
visiting head of state will not be offered
to the pope. An earlier visit by Pope
John Paul II in 1982 was a pastoral
visit only.
During his visit Benedict plans
to conduct a public mass in Glas-
gow’s Bellahouston Park, where some
300,000 people swarmed a mass cel-
ebrated by Pope John Paul II during
his pastoral visit in 1982.
In England, Benedict will preside
at the beatification of Cardinal John
Henry Newman in Coventry; in Lon-
don he will give a speech to leaders
of civil society, join leaders of other
churches for an ecumenical service at
Westminster Abbey and call on Arch-
bishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams
at Lambeth Palace. He will not visit

Have Been Jailed
A SENIOR government adviser on
children’s rights says two 10-year
old boys convicted of the murder of a
two-year-old should never have been
prosecuted.
Maggie Atkinson, Children’s Com-
missioner for England, told The Times
newspaper last month that Jon Ven-
ables and Robert Thompson shouldn’t
have been tried over the 1993 killing
of James Bulger.
She said no child aged under 12
should be prosecuted, as they are too
young to understand the consequences
of their actions.
Thompson and Venables were
jailed over the murder of two-year-
old Bulger in Liverpool, northern
England. They were released from
prison in 2001.
The issue has been reignited due to
Venables recently being sent back to
prison while police investigate allega-
tions he has committed new crimes
since his release.

A KRAFT INC executive apologized last
month for raising – and then dashing –
hopes that it would keep open a British
factory after its takeover of Cadbury, as the
US company’s chief executive came under

stone said he was “truly sorry” for the
uncertainty caused by Kraft’s back track
on the factory in Somerdale, western
England, adding that the company did not
plan to shut any more British factories or

I am personally terribly sorry,” Firestone
told a cross-party committee of lawmakers
who are holding a series of hearings into

her for failing to meet directly with workers
at Cadbury sites across the country to reas-

During a long and bitter takeover battle,
Kraft said it would save the Somerdale
plant and 400 associated jobs, a decision
that would have reversed earlier plans by
Cadbury to close the factory and move
production to Poland.
However, shortly after Kraft completed
its £11.5bn takeover last month, it said the
plant would close by 2011 because it had
become clear that it was “unrealistic to
reverse the closure program.”
Lindsay Hoyle, a member of the ruling
Labour Party, questioned whether the
U-turn on the Somerdale site suggested
Kraft was “remote, smug and worst of all
duplicitous,” while other lawmakers ex-
pressed amazement that the US company
was not fully aware of Cadbury’s plans.

Four-Day Rail
Strike Goes Ahead
UNION LEADERS in Britain announced
late last month that rail workers will take
a four-day strike, threatening the worst
national rail disruptions in 16 years.
Thousands of members of the Rail
Maritime and Transport union and the
Transport Salaried Staffs Association
employed by Network Rail will walk off
their jobs from April 6 to April 9. Although
Easter holiday travelers will be spared, the
walkout by signal workers – scheduled to
include the weekdays’ morning rush hour
– is expected to disrupt the commutes of
scores of people.
RMT general secretary Bob Crow said
the unions are protesting cost-cutting
measures proposed by Network Rail that
he insisted would undermine safety across
Britain’s railways and threaten rail workers’
job security.

“Network Rail, in a drive to slash 21
percent from their budget, want to ax 1,500
maintenance posts, lump maintenance func-
tions on to overworked signalers, rip up
agreements and impose changes that will
quite clearly undermine safety across our
railways,” he said.
Network Rail countered that changes
were necessary to provide a better service.
“Negotiations, not strikes, are the way
forward,” said Robin Gisby, the company’s
director of operations and customer ser-
vices. “This proposed strike is not about
safety ... The issue of safety is a smoke
screen from a union leadership stuck in the
steam age.”
Gisby added that although his company
aims to keep as many trains running as
possible, a national rail strike will have a
“severe impact” on services.

Northern Rock Back In Profit
NATIONALIZED mortgage lender North-
ern Rock, Britain’s first casualty of the
global credit crisis, said last month that
it returned to profit in the second half of
2009 as interest income rose and losses
on loans fell.
Northern Rock said it posted a profit of
£466.7m in the second half, following a
loss of £724.2m in the first half of 2009.
“We have turned the corner,” said Chief
Executive Gary Hoffman, who expressed
confidence that Northern Rock eventually
could emerge as an independent, privately

However, for the full year, Northern
Rock reported a pretax loss of £257.5m,
down from a loss of £1.355bn in the
previous year.

Want a Green Card? Make a Plan
I CAN’T tell you how many calls and emails
I get from good people who want a green
card and who could have easily qualified for
one but who self sabotaged their chances
by neglect. Brits actually have it easy. They
are from a country that is a party to the Visa
Waiver Program which allows them to enter
the US on holiday for up to 90 days. A Brit
need not apply for a visitor visa at a US
Consulate like the majority of other aspiring
visitors must do. So, the typical scenario is
that the Brit packs her bags for a US visit
of one length or another and somewhere
during the course of that visit, she decides
to remain in the US. The assumption, I sup-
pose, is that if the visitor visa application
requirement was waived, maybe the green
card application process, to some extent
will be waived as well. After all, we all speak
the same language, enjoy a reasonably cold
beer, like sports and not too long ago, we
were all the same country anyway. In 25
years of practice, I have heard from Brits who
entered the US as a visitor and haven’t left or
done anything towards achieving green card
status for over 20 years! A 10 year delay is
common and a five year delay is a routine
scenario.
Here is some free legal advice: “DON’T DO
THIS!” Why, once a foreign national is out
of lawful immigration status in the US, most
options immediately go out the window. Once
one is unlawfully present in the US for more
than 180 days, he or she is subject to a three
year bar which means he or she must depart
the US and reside out of the US for three years
before they will be considered to be eligible
for a temporary visa or a green card. If the
unlawful status in a year or more, the bar
is 10 years! Harsh but true. One of the few

the spouse of a US citizen.
It is much better to be more thoughtful
about an immigration strategy. After all,
being legal to live, work, come and go in
one’s new country of choice seems worthy
of this endeavor. It is reasonable to assume
that after a couple of months or so of a
holiday in the US, that one would have the
inkling that they might want to immigrate
permanently. Not always but many times.
Even if THE decision has not been made,
when one’s immigration status in a foreign
country is set to soon expire, ..and here is
some free legal advice: “DON’T BECOME
ILLEGAL IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY!” At least
not until competent legal advice is sought and
obtained. For example, the implications might
not be particularly serious or fatal if engaged
to a US citizen. It would be quite serious in
virtually all other scenarios.
So, the moral of the story is to do the re-
sponsible thing and the thing that will increase
the odds of achieving the objective, ie; seek
competent counsel sooner rather than later,
while there are more options available. The
decision to immigrate to another country has
to be among the most important decisions in
one’s lifetime. It should be treated as such.
One so inclined should gather information,
make a plan and execute. Procrastinators
are frequently disappointed when leaving an
immigration lawyer’s office.

May Election Looks Too Close To Call
IT’S GETTING pretty close now. By the end
of March, Alastair Darling will have delivered
his final Budget, a doubtless pretty piece
of window-dressing ahead of the election.
Very little will be enacted as a result of his
announcements since time will have run
out. In any case, the next Chancellor of the
Exchequer (whatever his party) is already
hard at work sorting out how to steer Britain
through the current financial mess.
It seems all but certain that the General
Election will take place on May 6, almost
exactly thirteen years after Tony Blair was
swept into power after 18 years of Conserva-
tive Government.
The biggest difference is that in 1997, the
country’s finances were very healthy. The
recession of the early 90s had been weath-
ered though the Tories’ ability to manage the
economy had received a crushing blow in
1992 when Britain had been forced out of the
European Exchange Rate Mechanism.
GROWTH
Despite this humiliation, the last few years
of Tory government laid the ground for genu-
ine growth and stability in the economy. One
of the promises that Tony Blair made in the
run-up to that election was that there would
be no changes to the Conservative spending
plans for the first two years of a New Labour
Government.
This reassured voters that Labour would
not indulge in an irresponsible spending
spree. In fact, the new Chancellor, Gordon
Brown, was able to preside over a lengthy
period of sustained growth, which led him to
declare ten years later that he had defeated
the old boom and bust cycles. Over and over
again, the Labour government repeated its
determination to banish for ever vicious eco-
nomic cycles. Finally in 2008, Gordon Brown
declared that this had been achieved. At this
point one is allowed a hollow laugh!
CHALLENGED
When challenged about this assertion by
Allison Pearson of the Mail in October 2008,
Brown claimed that what he actually said was
that he had promised an end to “Tory boom
and bust.” There were repeated examples of
his using ‘boom and bust’ but never insert-
ing the adjective “Tory”! No wonder no-one
trusts politicians.
Perhaps the biggest influence on the voting
intentions of the nation back then was sleaze.
This word has more or less dropped out of
circulation. It was applied unremittingly to
Tory politicians, such as Jeffrey Archer, Neil

One of the primary reasons UK Brits cite
when contacting my office about trans-
planting to Florida is “we’re overrun with
immigrants.” They appear to be right. We’re
not talking about Bradford or Southall, but
beautiful Berkshire. Here’s an excerpt from

Reading have been found to speak as many
as 150 different languages. So rich is the
ethnic mix that in some schools, not many

pockets but it gets more elusive by the day.
Of course the irony is that the Florida we
fled to is immigrant-laden too, including
us Brits. But we all have more space here
to spread out! Plus a smattering of British
accents amongst the orange groves adds
class, methinks.

Labour Icon Michael Foot Dies
FORMER Labour Party leader Michael
Foot died last month at age 96.
Foot was elected Labour leader in
1980, succeeding Cardiff MP Jim Cal-
laghan, but he stood down as leader
after losing the 1983 election to Margaret
Thatcher.
Foot, who succeeded Nye Bevan in
1960 in the Ebbw Vale constituency, died
at his home in Hampstead, London.
Foot was first elected to Parliament in
1945 and was an MP for 47 years. He was
born in Plymouth but became a giant of
Welsh politics.
One of the great political orators,
he nevertheless led Labour to its worst
defeat in 50 years at the 1983 election.
But his rebellious spirit, his passion and
loyalty endeared him to many in Wales.

to see the bird has adopted a litter of

wing. Mabel took a shine to the pups and
now keeps them warm by roosting on top
of them in their dog basket.

THIS MONTH, I thought it might be
interesting to follow up with a new
author whose first novel I reviewed
a year or so ago. In June 2009,
Maggie Dana traveled to London for
the release and launch of her novel,
Beachcombing, which McMillan
published only in the UK. Maggie
described the trip as wonderful and
said she gained a new appreciation
for the British rail system.
While her trip was filled with speak-
ing and signing engagements, some
moments were unforgettable and
impossibly special. “A school friend
from my very first school showed up
at a signing. You just never know. It
was a great, great trip – I had the best
time,” Maggie said.
On the actual day of publication,
Maggie went from bookshop to
bookshop to sign copies of her novel.
After she finished at Waterstone’s
on Oxford Street, they sent her to
Hatchard’s in Piccadilly, which has
been around since 1797.
Hatchard’s told Maggie they had
four copies for her to sign. “This girl
came trundling into the with a small
pine table,” Maggie said. When she
protested that she didn’t need the
table, the girl replied, “Oscar Wilde
signed his books at this table.” She
then took a photo of Maggie signing
her book at that same pine table,
sitting where Oscar Wilde had sat
more than a century ago.
Maggie then went to Cornwall for
more book signings and an interview
with radio Cornwall. “The host spent
15 minutes interviewing me about
the story – and he had actually read
my book!” Maggie said. During the
course of the interview, Maggie was
asked what her connection was with
Cornwall. “My parents used to take

me there on holiday, Maggie said. “I
remember the wonderful farmhouse
food and the little girl next door in the
cottage where the foreman’s family
lived. She was about my age.” Mag-
gie has since received an email from
her childhood friend, Mary.
What’s next for Maggie? She
continues to work in the publishing
industry as a typesetter and book
designer while her agent shops
around for a publisher for Maggie’s
second novel.
When I asked how her book is
doing, Maggie had this to say: “It’s
perking along and I find out how I’m
doing every six months when the
royalty check arrives.” Further, she
said, “People who go into this experi-
ence with starry-eyed expectations
will be disappointed. I had modest
expectations and am enjoying the hell
out of the whole experience.”

Finalists Announced For ‘Lost Booker Prize’

SIX WRITERS have a second shot at literary
glory, 40 years after they missed out on Britain’s
top book prize.
Finalists were announced last month for the
“lost” Booker Prize. They are Patrick White’s The
Vivisector, JG Farrell’s Troubles, Mary Renault’s
Fire From Heaven, Nina Bawden’s The Birds on
the Trees, Shirley Hazzard’s The Bay of Noon and
Muriel Spark’s The Driver’s Seat.
The Booker was originally awarded for books
published the previous year. But in 1971, it became
a prize for the best novel published that year –
omitting novels from 1970.
The Lost Man Booker Prize is an attempt to
remedy the oversight. Of the finalists, only Haz-
zard and Bawden are still alive, but all the books
are still in print. The winner will be announced
May 19.

Giant Pumpkin To Serve As Sailing Vessel

A VEGETABLE gardener in Anglesey is to sail to the
Isle of Man in a giant pumpkin he has grown.
Medwyn Williams, 67, of Llanfairpwll, is growing
a 725kg gourd to be his craft in a stunt to raise money
for the Help for Heroes campaign. The walls of his
pumpkin vessel with be 15cm thick and it will be fitted
with a seat and outboard motor, reports Metro.
Williams, who has won the President’s Award for
his vegetables at the Chelsea Flower Show, London,
will set off from his home on Anglesey. He said: “I am
totally confident this can be done – we shall call her
HMV Cinderella... Her Majesty’s Vegetable. I have
done tests with smaller pumpkins and they float well.
I might just make it to the Isle of Man.”

THE WORLD Indoor Athletic Championships
at Doha, UAR, March 12-14, saw world
heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis, claim
the pentathlon gold for Britain, when she
beat the three medallists in the last world
championships.

Britain’s Davis Cup Squad
has not won for three years,
and at Vilnius against Lithuania,
March 5-7, the disappointment
continued. James Ward got Brit-
ain off to a good start with a three
set win over Laurynas Grigelis,
then Dan Evans lost a five setter
to Ricardas Berankis. Ken Skupski and Colin
Fleming won the doubles against Dovydas
Sakinis and Grigelis that gave them a 2-1
lead going in to the final day. Berankis beat
James Ward in three sets, leaving the match
to hinge on Dan Evans against Grigelis. The
game went to five sets with Evans, who has
yet to win a Davis Cup encounter, continuing

Britain has dropped to the third tier of Davis
Cup competition, playing in the Europe/Africa
Group Two Zone, but they were expected to
win in Vilnius. Britain will next play Turkey, in
a relegation zone match, while skipper John
Lloyd resigned some days later. Andy Mur-
rray had earlier withdrawn from the squad
citing his tight schedule and suggesting that
the opportunity should be given to other
Britons to get Davis Cup experience.

Andy Murray reached the quarter-finals
of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells,
California, March 11-21, losing 1-6, 6-7 to

A DAVIES MONTH
Laura Davies has been the face of British
women’s’ golf on the international circuit
for over twenty years now, where she is
renowned for her long drives and fervent
consistency. February 28, the 46-year-old
Coventry born professional notched up her
73rd tournament success winning the New
Zealand Open at Christchurch, with a nine
under 279 total. Regarded as the most ac-
complished British female golfer of modern
times, she has won seven major champion-

finish in the Australian Women’s Open in

Another Davies (no relation) 24-year-old
Rhys Davies from Bridgend, enjoying his first
professional year on the circuit challenged
for the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, but
finished two strokes (12 under-par) shy of

Justin Rose lay down the pace at the

FIELD HOCKEY
England made a great start to the men’s
field hockey World Cup in Delhi, India, Febru-
ary 28-March 13, winning four of their five
round-robin matches in group B. They beat
Australia 3-2,South Africa 6-4, Pakistan
5-2, India 3-2, before losing 2-0 to Spain.
It was enough to get them in the semi-finals
against reigning champions Germany who
proved too robust however and won 4-1.
The Netherlands denied England the bronze
medal winning 3-1. Australia are the new field
hockey world champions beating Germany
2-1 in the final.
RUGBY UNION
France won the six nations rugby union
championship, March 20, with a 12-10 win
over England in Paris, as the final games were
played. France won the Grand Slam winning
five games from five matches. Other results
saw Wales beat Italy 33-10 at home, and
Scotland beat Ireland 23-20 in Dublin.
Northampton won the Anglo-Welsh
knockout Cup at Sixways Stadium, Worces-
ter, March 21, beating Gloucester 30-24.
WORLD CUP WARM-UPS
March 3, saw a number of major friendly
internationals as South Africa 2010 looms
large. 80,000 plus filled Wembley Stadium,
where a goal by Mohamed Zidan in the 23rd
minute saw newly crowned African Cup win-
ners Egypt go in to the lead against England.
But Fabio Cappello’s men went from strength
to strength as they moved forward with a
brace by Peter Crouch and a single by Shaun
Wright-Phillips to win 3-1. At Hampden,
Craig Levein’s debut as Scotland’s new
coach saw a Scott Brown goal in the 62nd
minute against the Czech Republic earn a 1-0
victory. A small crowd gathered in Swansea
where Wales took on Sweden, but John
Toshack’s strategies disappointed. A Johan
Elmander netting just before the break, saw
the Swedes win 1-0. Northern Ireland’s
depleted squad was in Tirana, where a 26th
minute goal by Ervin Skela gave Albania a
close 1-0 victory.
Other results saw European champions
Spain beat France 2-0 in Paris, and Argentina
overcame Germany 1-0, in Munich, with a
goal by Gonzalo Hizuain on the break. Italy
struggled in a home fixture with Cameroon
ending up with a goalless draw. The USA
were beaten 2-1 by the Netherlands in Am-
sterdam, where Carlos Bocanegra’s header
two minutes from time put the Americans on
the card. America skipper Landon Donovan
scored his first goal for Everton, March 7, as
the toffees beat Hull City 5-1. Everton were
unsucessful at extending Donovan’s loan
period as the LA Galaxy needed him back
for the MLS new season kick-off.
FA CUP
The sixth round of the FA Cup, March
6-7, saw Shane Long put Reading two in
front in their home match with Aston Villa,
but John Carew netted a hat-trick that saw
the midlanders win 4-2. Frank Lampard and
John Terry were instrumental in carving out
a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea
beat Stoke City 2-0. Portsmouth put their
administration worries aside at Fratton Park,
as Frederic Piquionne grabbed two in three
minutes to down Birmingham City 2-0. At
Craven Cottage, London neighbours Fulham
and Tottenham Hotspur fought out a goalless
draw with Spurs winning the replay 3-1 on
March 24. Spurs now face Portsmouth in
the semi-finals.
WAYNE ROONEY CLAIMS THE
CARLING CUP FOR UNITED
Sir Alex Ferguson added a 32nd career
trophy to his long and spectacular years as
Britain’s most successful soccer manager,
when Manchester United beat Aston Villa
2-1 to win the Carling English League Cup
at Wembley, February 28. A monster crowd
of 88,596 watched both teams record their
eighth appearance in a league cup final, Villa
previous winning five and United three.
United and Villa had previously met in
the final back in 1994, when the midlanders
had won 3-1. A Nemanjic Vidic foul in the
box, allowed Villa to go in front in the fifth
minute, where penalty taker James Milner
put it away. Michael Owen hit an equalizer
seven minutes later and the game was up
for grabs. Wayne Rooney got the winner in
the 74th minute.
UNITED & ARSENAL MAKE THE
SEMI-FINALS
The European Champions league moved
tougher and tenser as the last eight battled
for semi-final places. Old Trafford gave David
Beckham an appreciative roar as came on as
substitute for AC Milan in the 64th minute, but
by then United had done the damage and led
3-0. A Wayne Rooney double (13th & 46th
minutes, and a Ji Sung Park goal in the 59th
minute had a 74,000 plus crowd baying ec-
statically. The Italians got one back in the 64th
minute, but a netting by Darren Fletcher three
minutes from time gave the Reds a 4-0 win,
and a 7-2 aggregate in to the last four.
Fighting a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in
Portugal, Arsenal unleashed a goal barrage
at the Emirates, where Porto crashed 5-0 to
an exuberant Gunner’s side full of fire and
pep. Nicklas Bendtner got a hat-trick, while
Samir Nasri and Emmanuel Eboue found
the net too.
At San Siro in the first leg, Chelsea fell to

have been hit by a calf injury that will sideline
him for up to a month.
Portsmouth – Legal Action Dropped

Donovan has returned to the Los Angeles

Donovan scored two goals in 13 matches
for Everton, helping the club beat Chelsea
and Manchester United, and draw against

City To Redevelop Around Stadium
MANCHESTER City has unveiled plans
to redevelop the area around its stadium
after signing an agreement with the local
council.
The project will turn Eastlands – created
for the 2002 Commonwealth Games – into
what City described as a “world class sports
and leisure complex.”
That could include building a new training
ground and extending the stadium from its
current 48,000 capacity.
It would be the latest step in Sheikh Man-
sour’s transformation of City since the mem-
ber of Abu Dhabi’s royal family bought the
Premier League club in September 2008.
Mansour has invested around £400m in
City, mostly on signing new players.

channels are set to start broadcasting across

service is launched.

ternational feed of programing for broadcast
rights holders outside Britain to form their
own Premier League channels.
Van Der Sar Signs To June 2011
EDWIN van der Sar, the Manchester United
goalkeeper, has signed a new deal that ties
him to the English champions until June
2011.
The contract extension keeps the Dutch
goalkeeper at Old Trafford beyond his 40th
birthday in October.
United Freezes Ticket Prices
For Next Season
MAN UNITED has frozen ticket prices for next
season amid mounting protests against the
owning Glazer family.
The Glazers have been criticized for the
size of price rises since their leveraged
takeover in 2005, which has left the club with
debt of $1.1bn.
The announcement means admission to
Old Trafford on matchdays will continue to
cost £27-49, with season tickets ranging
from £513-931.

There was a curiously muted atmosphere
for the game, largely because the fast open
rugby was played by the Welsh but the
dynamic Irish pack, led by the inspirational
Paul O’Donnell, never let the Welsh build
a secure platform. Man of the match was
Tomas O’Leary at scrum-half, scoring one
and making another.
Ireland were always going to have trouble
defending their Grand Slam status this sea-
son. Ultimately their real test came in Paris
and they left badly beaten. But they are with-
out doubt the leading Home Nations side and
can look forward to next year’s World Cup
with some optimism. For Wales, it turned into
another disappointing season: in each match
they started too slowly, lost men to the sin
bin at critical moments and then leaked tries
when they were a man down.
For the final match against Italy, Wales
awarded a cap to their youngest-ever player,
Tom Prydie, who celebrated his 18th birthday
less than a month ago. Wales’ previous
youngest player was Cardiff’s Norman Briggs
back in 1888. Wales were hoping to field
their strongest side with scrumhalf Martin

Capello Plans For World Cup
Without Injured Beckham
ENGLAND coach Fabio Capello expressed
sadness last month that David Beckham’s
ruptured Achilles’ tendon will prevent him
from playing at the World Cup.
Beckham underwent surgery on his left
Achilles’ tendon and Capello remains hopeful
that the 34-yera-old midfielder will be fit for
England’s European Championship qualifica-
tion campaign, which begins in September.
Beckham was injured during the final
minutes of AC Milan’s 1-0 Italian league win
over Chievo Verona.
“I am very sad for David that he has suf-
fered this injury,” Capello said. “David is a
great professional and has worked very hard
to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it
will be a big blow.”

replacement Toby Flood put over a couple of

If that sounds exciting, your correspondent
apologises. This game was huff and puff
rugby, with neither side contriving a break.
The referee’s insistence on getting the scrum
right meant that much of the game was
spent watching scrums getting ready – and
collapsing.
An injury to Steve Borthwick left him
unlikely to feature in the final game against
France.
France 46 Italy 20
This was probably the most predictable
result of the championship. The French tore
their opponents apart, running in six tries.
The Azurri came back late in the game with
a couple of their own but by that time France
had lost interest. They were looking ahead to
the home game against England and a first
Grand Slam since 2004. The Italians were
anticipating with no little dread a meeting with
a wounded Wales at the Millennium Stadium
and the wooden spoon.
