Arab Saudi want to redesign the al-Haram mosque complex to host more than triple the current
900,000 capacity. King Abdullah has approached 18 architects including Zaha Hadid and Norman
Foster to establish a new architectural vision for the complex and the whole city.

Hearst Tower Won the 2008 International Highrise Award

Hearst Tower is 46-storey extension above an existing six-storey Art Deco building located in New
York. Completed in 2006, the tower was designed by Norman+ Forster and achieved LEED
certification with gold rating. During a ceremony in the Frankfurt Paulskirche recently, the tower was
crowned with the prestigious International Highrise Award.

Family House in Yokohama by Torofu

Designed by Torofu, a Tokyo-based architect, this family house is located in Yokohama, Japan. It has
uncommon 3D mass especially on it roof. This one-storey house is constructed with cast concrete.
The house being one-storied, we were able to form the roof with freedom. And taking advantage of
the freedom, we aimed to make the exterior and the interior appear as two sides of the same object.

Foster New Design for an Addition to the Parke-Bernet

After getting massive critics on the previous design, Foster proposed new design for an addition to the
Parke-Bernet Gallery on Manhattans Upper East Side. The design is still under review by the the New
York Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) which predicts to release for public in early fall. The
new design proposed erecting a 30-story (revised to 5-story) elliptical glass tower atop the building.

The classic Copenhagen amusement park or known as the Concert Hallin Tivoli has been renovated
with modern touch. The works has been done with the help of 3XN. As you can see in the picture, now
the hall has modern expression by implementing light and transparent facade.
A new extension has been realized in a light, transparent and modern expression in keeping with the
existing Tivoli pavilion architecture. Moreover, the added feature comprises improved staff facilities, a
family restaurant, and a conference centre. The new building replaces the former Winter Entrance,
which in turn has been demolished.

The French Embassy of Germany by Atelier Christian de Portzamparc is a Prizewinning entry of a


competition in 1997.
Program: This cultural facility accomodates the Ambassadors residence, the Consolate and
Chancellery offices, the cultural department, function halls, a cafeteria, an amphitheatre, housing and
multifunctional spaces, all divided into seven buildings.

125th Birthday of Walter Gropius

Google just remined me that today is Walter Gropiuss birthday. Born 125 years ago in Berlin, he has
German/American nationality. His works, Fagus Factory, that was constructed between 1911 and
1913 in Germany, was mentioned as an important example of early modern architecture. He also
founded a Building School or known as Bauhaus that was closed by Nazi regime in 1933.

Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has been selected by Chelsfield deputy chairman to
redevelop the existing modernist Commonwealth Institute in Kensington and Chelsea, London. The
redevelopment will be achieved by injecting life in to it with new residential.
OMA will explore a number of uses appropriate to the existing design, capitalizing on the buildings
