1. (a) Explain briefly with the aid of diagrams the difference between series, shunt
and compound D.C. generator.
(b) A Separately excited generator, when running at 1200rpm supplies 200A at
125V to a circuit of constant resistance. What will be the current when the
speed is dropped to 1000rpm If the field current is unaltered? Armature
resistance is 0.04Ω . Total drop at brushes is 2V. Ignore change in armature
reaction. [8+8]
2. Swinburne test gave the following results on a DC shunt machine: Supply Voltage
500V, No-load current 5A, Armature resistance 0.5Ω and Field resistance 250Ω.
Determine the efficiency of the machine
(a) as a generator delivering 100A at 500V
(b) as a motor having a line current of 100A at 500V. Neglect temperature rise
during operation. Assume stray losses at 1% of output. [16]
3. (a) Explain the principle of operation of a transformer

(b) Derive an expression for voltage per turn of a transformer [8+8]
4. Discuss the procedure for conducting open circuit test and short circuit test on
transformer, and also explain the how to obtain efficieny and regulation from these
test [16]
5. (a) Derive the condition for maximum torque of an 3-phase Induction Motor.
(b) A 3.3 KV, 24-pole, 50 Hz, 3-phase star connected Induction Motor has a slip-
ring rotor resistance of 0.016Ω and stand still reactance of 0.265Ω per phase.
Calculate
i. the speed at maximum torque
ii. ratio of full-load torque to maximum torque, if full-load torque is obtained
at 247 r.p.m. [8+4+4]
6. (a) In general, the field winding of an 3-phase alternator is a rotating element and
the armature is stationary. Give reasons.
(b) A 3-phase, 16-pole alternator has the following data: Number of slots = 192;
Conductors / slot = 8 (conductors of each phase are connected in series); coil
span = 1600 (electrical); speed of the alternator = 450 r.p.m.; flux / pole = 55
mwb. Calculate the phase and line voltages. [6+10]

1. (a) Explain the basic principle of operation of a D.C. Generator?


(b) Discuss the reasons for failure of self excitation, and suggest the remedies.
(c) The wave connected armature of a 2-pole, 200V generator has 400 conductors
and runs at 300rpm. Calculate the useful flux per pole. If the number of turns
in each coil is 1200, what is the average value of the emf induced in each coil
on breaking the field if the flux dies away completely in 0.15 seconds? [6+4+6]

2. (a) Explain back e.m.f. and derive the expression for back e.m.f. What is its
relation to the applied voltage?
(b) A 200V DC shunt motor takes 22A at rated voltage and runs at 1000rpm. Its
field resistance is 100Ω and armature circuit resistance is 0.1Ω. Compute the
value of additional resistance to be included in the armature circuit to reduce
the speed to 800rpm; when
i. the load torque is proportional to speed and
ii. the load torque varies as the square of the speed. [8+8]

3. Explain the working of a transformer at no load and full load conditions with neat
diagrams. [16]

4. (a) Define voltage regulation of a transformer. Deduce the expression for the
voltage regulation
(b) The number of turns on the primary and secondary windings of a single phase
transformer are 350 and 35 respectively. If the primary is connected to a 2.2
KV 50 HZ supply determine the secondary voltage. [8+8]

5. (a) Explain why a starter is necessary for starting of 3-phase Induction Motor?
Name the starters used for starting 3-phase Induction Motor.
(b) Explain the rotor resistance starter of a 3-phase Induction Motor. Bring out
its merits and demerits. [8+8]

6. (a) Explain the constructional features of alternator.


(b) How e.m.f is induced in an 3-phase alternator? Derive the expression for e.m.f
induced in an alternator in terms of pitch and distribution factors. [8+8]

1. (a) Explain O.C.C. of a D.C. shunt generator


(b) A separately exited generator gave the following data for o.c.c. at 1000 r.p.m..

The armature resistance including brushes is 0.5Ω . If the generator is now


shunt connected and is driven at 1100 r.p.m., then, for a total shunt field
resistance of 180Ω
i. Calculate the no load e.m.f.
ii. Calculate the output current and the shunt field current for the terminal

2. (a) Explain various power stages of in a D.C. Motor.


(b) What will happen when a D.C. Series Motor is started without a load con-
nected to it?
(c) A 4 pole, 500V, shunt motor has a total of 720 armature conductors which are

wave wound. The full-load armature current is 60A, and the flux per pole is
0.03Wb. The armature resistance is 0.2Ω. the voltage drop across a brush is
1 volt. Calculate the full-load speed of the motor. [6+4+6]

3. (a) Derive an emf equation of a single phase transformer .


(b) The maximum flux density in the core of 250 /3000 Volts 50 HZ single phase
transformer is 1.2 webers per square meter. If the emf per turn is 8 volts
determine primary and secondary turns and area of the core. [8+8]

4. What are the different losses occurring in a transformer. How can these losses be
determined experimentally. [16]

5. (a) Explain why a 3-phase Induction Motor cannot develop torque when running
at synchronous speed. Define the slip and deduce how the frequency of rotor
currents and magnitude of rotor e.m.f are related to slip.

to be generated on open-circuit = 4000 V at 50-Hz; speed = 500 r.p.m.; stator
slots/pole/phase = 3; conductors/slot=12. Calculate the useful flux/pole.Assume
all conductors per phase to be connected in series and coil to be full pitch.

1. (a) Compare the operation of a D.C. Generator and Motor, and mention one
application of each machine.
(b) The following data pertain to the magnetization curve of a D.C. shunt gener-
ator at 1500 r.p.m.

For this generator, obtain
i. The voltage on open circuit to which the machine will build up e.m.f. for
a total shunt resistance of 100Ω.
ii. The critical value of the shunt field resistance at 1500 r.p.m.
iii. The magnetization curves at 1200 r.p.m. therefore the open circuit voltage
for a field resistance of 100Ω. [4+12]

2. (a) Derive an expression for the torque of a DC motor.


(b) A 240V, 50A, 800rpm DC shunt motor has armature resistance of 0.2Ω. If
the load torque is reduced to 60% of its full load value and a resistance of 2?
