REGULATIONS1OFTHEMASTERTHESISOFTHE
MASTERININNOVATIONANDRESEARCHININFORMATICS

1. INTRODUCTION
InordertoobtainthedegreeofMasterinArtificialIntelligence(MAI),thestudentmustperforma
MasterThesis.ThisdocumentcontainstheregulationsoftheMasterThesis.

2. DEFINITIONANDCHARACTERISTICS
Themasterthesisisanoriginalworkdone,ingeneral,onanindividualbasis(itisanticipatedthe
possibility of coordinated TFMs, see point 14 of this Regulation). It must be presented and
defendedinfrontofaUniversitycommittee.Thisthesisshouldconsistofacomprehensiveproject
that will synthesize a high number of competences achieved throughout the masters courses.
Accordingly,itmustdemonstratethatthestudentknowshowtoapplytheknowledgeacquired.
AllthedocumentationgeneratedbythethesishastobeinEnglish.

3. CREDITSANDWORKLOAD
Thenumberofcreditsofthesisis18ECTS.
Theburdenofworkforthestudentisestimatedin30hourspercredit.

4. MODALITIES
Thethesisiscarriedoutaccordingtooneofthefourfollowingmodalities:
A:projectsatUB,URVorUPC

B:projectsincompanies/institutions.
C:projectsonmobility,bothnationallyandinternationally.

D:projectsincompanies/institutionsabroad.

MODALITYA
These theses are linked to an academic unit (Department, Research Institute, etc.) and are
proposedbyaprofessorsorthestudent.Professorscanmaketheirproposalspublicatanytime
usingtheavailablemechanism.Studentsinterestedinaparticularproposalcancontactdirectly
theprofessor.Iftheproposalstartsfromthestudent,he/shehastocontactaprofessorofthe
schooltobecomehis/heradvisor.

MODALITYB
Studentswithaworkingcontractorunderaneducationalcooperationagreementcancarryout
theprojectinthismodeinacompany/institution.Theseprojectsareadvisedbyapersonwitha
permanent contract from the company/institution. In this case, the student interested should
maketheproposaltoanyprofessoroftheschoolthat,ifhe/sheaccepts,willbecomethetutorof
theproject.

providedonlyforinformationpurposesandithasnolegalbindingwhereastheCatalanversiondoeshavethe
legalstatusforregulatingthemasterthesis.

The master thesis in category B will have to defend, at the latest, in the next defense period
followingtheexpiryofthecontractoreducationalcooperationagreement.
MODALITYC
Thethesesofthistypearecarriedoutwithintheframeworkofstudentexchangeagreements.
These theses are ruled by the regulations of the receiving University and are conducted and
evaluatedbythefacultyofthatUniversity.

MODALITYD
The theses of this type are similar to those of modality B with the difference that they are
performedinacompany/institutionabroaduponsigningofthecorrespondingagreement.

5. PREREGISTRATIONOFTHEMASTERTHESIS
Studentsmustpreregistertheirthesesbeforetheyregisterit.Studentscanpreregisterthethesis
whentheyhavepassedaminimumof30ECTSofthecoursesofthemaster.

6.REGISTRATIONOFTHEMASTERTHESIS
Studentscanregisterthethesiswhentheyhavepassedaminimumof30ECTS.Theregistrationof
theTFMis18ECTScredits.TheregistrationisvalidforthetimeperiodstatedinUPCsregulations.

7. THEADVISORANDTUTOR
Advisor
Theadvisorofthethesismusthaveadegreeinengineeringequivalenttoamaster'sdegree.Both
atthetimeofregistrationasatthetimeofthedefense,professorsandadvisorsmustbepartUB,
URVorUPCfacultymembers.Otherwise,thethesisrequiresatutorwhoisafacultymemberof
UB,URVorUPC.

TheadvisorofaMasterThesisisinchargeof:
Advisethestudentinallmattersrelatedtothedevelopmentoftechnicalandtransversal

skillsassociatedwiththeproject.

Trackandmonitorthethesis.

Tutor
Thetutorofthethesismusthaveadegreeinengineeringequivalenttoamaster'sdegree.Bothat
thetimeofregistrationasatthetimeofthedefense,thetutormustbepartafacultymemberof
UB,URVorUPC.
ThetutorofaMasterThesisisresponsiblefor:
Advisetheadvisorand/orthestudenttoensurethattheworkcomplieswiththe

requirementsarisingfromthisregulation.
Followuptheworkincollaborationwiththeadvisor.

Morethanoneadvisor
Theseregulationsrecognizethepossibilitythatathesisiscoadvisedbytwoormorepersons.

8. ITINERARYOFTHETHESIS
MODALITIESAandB
Astudentwhoisinapositiontostartthethesismust:
1. Preregisterthethesis.
2. Registerthethesis.
3. Defendthework.

MODALITYC
Astudentwhoisinapositiontostartthethesismust:
1. Registerthethesis.
2. Whenreturningfromtheexchangeprogram,thescoreinthetranscriptisadaptedtothescale
of0to10andincorporatedintothestudentsrecords.
Inallcases,theregistrationisvalidasstatedinUPCsregulationsforMasterThesis.Ifthethesisis
notdefendedintheperiodofvalidity,itisnecessarytoreregisterit.

9. EVALUATION
Thethesisisassessedgloballywithasinglescore.

In the case of modalities A, B and D, the evaluation is done at one the three participating
universities as explained below. In the case of category C, the evaluation is performed by the
receivinguniversity.
Theevaluationrequiresthedeliveryofawrittenreportoftheworkandthepublicdefenseofthe
workinapublicsessioninfrontofanevaluationcommittee.Theevaluationiscarriedoutinone
ofthepredeterminedperiodstodefendthethesis.Thedatesofdeliveryofthereportandpublic
presentationwillbeannouncedbytheschoolbeforethestartofeachsemester.
ThethesisofmodalitiesA,BandDareevaluatedbyacommittee,appointedbytheDeanofthe
FIB,andproposedbythemaster'sAcademicCommittee(CAIMAI).Thelistofcommitteemembers
ismadepublicatleastfifteendaysbeforethedateplannedtodefendthethesis.Thecommittee
is composed of three professors of the participating universities, which act with the roles of
President,SecretaryandBoardmember.Atleast,oneoftheprofessorsinthecommitteemustbe
assignedtothemaster'sprogram,orhe/shemusthavebeenassignedinanyoftheprevioustwo
academicyears.Thecommitteesareorganizedbyspecialties.Themembersofacommitteecannot
beatthesametimeadvisorsortutorsofanyofthemasterthesistoevaluate.
The committee assesses together the competences (except the transversal) numerically and
assigns a single qualification. In addition, the committee assesses the transversal competences
assignedtothemasterthesisalphanumerically.

InthecaseofmodalityC,theevaluationofthethesisisperformedbythereceivingUniversity.The
gradecertificateissuedbythatUniversityshouldincludeboththenumberofECTScreditsofthe
workdoneasthequalificationobtained.Iftheevaluationofthethesisincludesinformationon
disciplinary skills, this will also be included in the students records. The thesis made in this
modalitymusthaveatleast30ECTScreditsandthegradeobtainedisadaptedtothescaleof0to

10 based. Exceptionally, when the grade of origin is not available and there is no additional
informationfromthereceivingUniversity,theCAIMAImayrequirethedefenseoftheworkatthe
oneofthethreeparticipatingschools.Thedesignatedcommitteewillevaluatetheprojectand
givethefinalgrade.
10. INTELLECTUALANDINDUSTRIALPROPERTY
Theindustrialandintellectualpropertyrightsofthethesisareregulatedbytheregulationsinforce
attheuniversitywherethethesisisperformed.
PleasenotethatthispolicyhasnoeffectintheprojectsofthemodalitiesB,CandDastheseare
outside the scope of UB/URV/UPC. In the case of modalities B and D, the intellectual property
rights of the thesis are determined by the agreement/contract between the student and the
company.IfthethesiscorrespondstomodalityC,theintellectualpropertyisdeterminedbythe
academicregulationsofthereceivingUniversity.Theonlyexceptionthatwillbeconsideredisfor
thesesofmodalityBthathaveasanadvisoraprofessoroftheSchool.Inthiscase,theagreement
betweentheprofessorandthecompanymustspecifywhohastheintellectualpropertyrightsof
thethesis.

11. CONFIDENTIALITY
The report of all master thesis presented is made public through the UPC library service. The
studentortheadvisormayrequestaconfidentialtreatmentviaawrittenrequesttotheMaster
Coordinator.Incaseswhereconfidentialityisapproved,alltheinformationrelatedtotheworkis
notmadepublicanditisonlyaccessiblebymembersoftheCommitteefortheirevaluationand
thenitisfiledintothestudentsrecord.
Ifastudentwantstochangethetreatmentofconfidentialityafterdefendingthework,he/she
mustrequestitbymeansofaformsignedbythestudent,theadvisorandthetutorincasethere
isone.TheformshouldbedirectedtotheMasterCoordinator.

12. CHANGESOFTHEPROJECTDATA
Anymodificationofthedataofthemasterthesis:title,changeofadvisor,specialty,...shouldbe
donebymeansofaformsignedbytheadvisor(orthetutorinthecasesinwhichthisisnecessary)
andthestudent.ThisdocumentshouldbeaddressedtotheMasterCoordinator.
Onceregisteredforthethesischangeswillnotbeallowed.TheMasterCoordinatormayestablish
exceptionsindulyjustifiedcases.

13. CANCELLINGTHEMASTERTHESIS
Boththeadvisorofthemasterthesis(orthetutor)aswellasthestudentcancancelthemaster
thesisunilaterallybymeansofarequesttotheMasterCoordinator.

Intheeventthattherequestcomesfromtheadvisorortutor,theMasterCoordinatorwillwork
toensurethatthepositionisassignedtoanewprofessor,ifthisispossible,orthatthestudent
canregisteranewthesis.

14. REPORTOFTHEMASTERTHESIS

Attheendofthethesis,thestudentmusthandinthereportfollowingtheprocedureestablished
in the document "Procedure of delivery of the master thesis". The report is validated by the
advisor/tutor. Once validated, it will become automatically accessible by the members of the
Committee.Thestudentmustsubmitthereportsothatthecommitteecanhaveatleastaweek
inadvanceofthedateagreedforthedefense.
By default, it is not necessary to deliver the report on paper, but it is the responsibility of the
studenttosendahardcopytothemembersofthecommitteethatexplicitlyrequestit.Insucha
case,thedocumenthastobeboundtofacilitatethestudy.Thisregulationdoesnotestablishany
furtherrequirementsregardingtheformatofthebindingwiththeaimofreducingthecostand
thetimenecessaryforitspreparation.
The report of a thesis must be original and unique. In the case of theses where the degree of
sharingofworkishigh,studentsshouldstateclearlywhatarethecontributionsofeachofthe
studentsintheirrespectivereports.

Thereportofathesisshouldstartwithasummaryofthework(abstract)of1000words.
