What is education good for?

Education is one of the factors that most effects the advancement and progress of individuals
and societies. In addition to providing knowledge, education enriches the culture, spirit, values
and everything that characterizes us as human beings.
Education is necessary in every way. To achieve higher levels of social welfare and economic
growth; to level the economic and social inequalities; to promote social mobility of people; to
access better employment levels; to raise the cultural conditions of the population; to expand
opportunities for young people; to energize civic and secular values that strengthen the relations
of societies; for democratic progress and strengthening the rule of law; for the promotion of
science, technology and innovation.
Education has always been important for development, but has become more important in
today's world that lives deep transformations, motivated in part by the rapid advance of science
and its applications, as well as the no less rapid media development and information
technology.
In modern economies knowledge has become one of the most important factors of production.
The companies that have advanced economically and socially are those that have managed to
build their progress in knowledge, both broadcast in schooling, as that is generated through
research. Education, science and technological innovation depend, increasingly, productivity
and economic competitiveness, as well as much of the social and cultural development of
nations.
Global experience shows the existence of a close relationship between the level of development
of countries, in its broadest sense, with the strength of their education systems and scientific
and technological research. According to studies by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an additional year of schooling increases GDP per capita
of a country between 4 and 7%.
Gone are the days when it was considered to expenditures on education as an expense. Today,
knowledge is a very productive, strategic investment in economically and socially priority.
In short, education contributes to more equitable, productive and equitable societies. It is a
social good that makes freer to humans.

What are the main aims of education?
One of the main purposes of education is that individuals know their full potential as human
beings and citizens of a society and the world. Our personal and professional decisions are
guided by the quality of education we receive. Also, the health of our society and our planet
depend on reasoning, values and ability to make decisions that we make as citizens, legislators,
judges and leaders.
Social and economic development
From the point of view of society, one of the most compelling purpose of education is to facilitate
social and economic development. A community of skilled, educated and capable people is
more likely to overcome the problems of poverty and social injustice that plague many
developing nations. Education can provide opportunities for social and economic advancement,
sustainable systems, social inclusion and implementation of the necessary changes.
Build character
Inculcate social and ethical values in students is a task shared by educational institutions and
parents. Individuals and societies face a world with increasing interpersonal and global violence
caused by several factors, such as economic stress and competition, discrepancies between
cultures and ideologies, racism and other problems. A strong sense of values and social ethics
based on understanding of the constructive and destructive forces at work in any society can
help build stability in the individual and in the community.
Achieve social solidarity based on respect for differences
Perhaps the main purpose of education is to enable people to create unity in a world of
differences. A truly representative democracy does not deliver the powers and special rights for
decision making a few savvy individuals political and economically privileged. Resolutions and
solutions inevitably fail, as some people are excluded from the process of solving problems and
creating solutions. All societies in the world are becoming more pluralistic, not less. You can find
solutions that benefit everyone, not just a few.
