Mineral extraction activities can generate a signicant environmental impact. MAXAM TAPs Environmental
Impact Control Service helps mines and quarries set up a plan to monitor and control the environmental impact
from drilling and blasting operations.
In addition, MAXAM works with mines to modify drilling and blasting practices to reduce the emissions of NOx in
fumes, and reduce the amount of nitrogen leached into ground and surface water as a result of using explosives
MAXAM technicians work with mine staff to set up
a monitoring program for blast fumes and water
quality using the standard methodology shown
below.
APPLICATIONS
Open pit mining
Civil Infrastructure
Underground mining
Quarries
BENEFITS
Reduce environmental impact.
Control and reduce blast fumes (CO, NOx, NH3,
HS and other gases).
Control and reduce nitrate and ammonia in
water.
Fumes:
Fumes are measured with eld gas monitors and
tracked. Emphasis is on tracking the amount of
NOx, CO, NH3, and O2. Optionally, CH4, H2S and other
gases may also be tracked.
Water quality:
Water quality upstream and downstream from the
mine are analyzed and tracked with portable kits,
and samples can be sent to recognized labs for
detailed analysis
MAXAM technicians can further help the mine
change drilling & blasting practices to reduce and
control fumes, and the impact of mine operations
on the quality of ground and surface water.

Ground vibration is generated from all blasts as a result of the sudden compression of the rock surrounding
the blasthole. This results in a powerful compressive wave motion in the surrounding rock that radiates
out in a spherical shape from the blasthole. These vibration waves attenuate rapidly as they lose energy
at each geological boundary and the energy is spread over a larger and larger surface area until it nally
dies out at some distance from the blasthole. Air overpressure is the part of the wave that reaches the
atmosphere.

The air blast and vibration monitoring service is a
management solution offering blast design and
execution supported by sophisticated measurement
and statistical modeling techniques that are
designed to assist customers make blast design
decisions that recognize the likely vibration or air
blast impacts for a given point, structure or site.
Maintain license to operate.
Preserve mine reputation.
Reduced mineral loss.
Minimize costly/inefficient alternative methods
of ore extraction.
METHODOLOGY
Vibrations and overpressure monitoring consist in
the measurement of levels of vibration and pressure
generated by one blast and their comparison with
standard limits.
One step beyond vibration monitoring vibration
analysis, consisting in calculating attenuation
formula for a specic blast design and for each rock
mass. Methodology is quite complex and consists
of:
Test blast program, shooting a number of single
holes and measuring in a number of locations.
Statistical and empirical simulation (measures
and peak values) .
PPV attenuation formula: V=K Q^ D^(-)
Frequency Attenuation formula: F=K D^(-)
PPV limits analysis and denition.
MIC (maximum instantaneous charge)
-Distance Table that allows do the blast
design assuring that no vibrations are over
the limit.

VELOCITY OF DETONATION
MONITORING
APPLICATIONS
Open pit
Civil construction
Underground
Quarry
BENEFITS
Safety, Quality and Environmental:
Determine detonation performance low or
high-, or failure thay may have occurred in the
explosive column.
Test the VoD as Quality Control to verify
product specications.
Determine the effects of detonating cord
downlines on explosives.
Check timing accuracy of electric, electronic
and non-electric delay detonators in full scale
blasting environments.
Evaluate length and type of material to use
as stemming in decks to avoid sympathetic
detonation, and/or explosive deck
desensitisation.
Economical:
Determine the minimum booster size and type
for any explosive column by measuring the runup VODs in full scale blasting environments.
Determine the minimum length of explosive
column to use as an explosive deck in decked
holes, considering the ingress of stemming
and drill cuttings, water pick-up etc and
the explosive run-up distance to full VOD
requirements.
EQUIPMENT
There are some commercial devices that can be used
to determine VOD:
Some of them portable and low cost, useful for
periodic QC control in the operations
Others are more sophisticated to perform more
complex analysis
Analysis software is an important requirement, in
order to get more accurate results.
Most of the actual commercial devices are based
on measuring continuous wire resistance during an
explosive columns detonation. Multipoint methods
are old-fashioned.
METHODOLOGY
Measurement methodology consists in using a high
resistance cable probecable- along the borehole
length. The cable will be destroyed and shortcircuited continuously by detonation shock wave
and voltage variation will also be registered.
Cable has to be in a right position, without loops or
rounds that could affect accuracy of measurement.
Safety rules have to be considered as well, in order
to avoid loss of the equipment or even personal
injuries.
VoD probe placement
