PROJECT 01

SPATIAL FORMATION CONDITION

15%

INTRODUCTION
The starting of Design Studio Two, you are expose to a series of spatial formation condition, and how
this volumetric manipulations would result different quality and perception of space.
Project 01 started with the play of 6 spatial formation keywords, you will be given to one of condition,
to search an object/product/phenomena that could relate to it, then provide a general analysis on
how would this keywords help to provide a better use of this product.
Later in second task, from the understanding of this keyword and its volumetric manipulation result,
search for a good architecture piece and provide a complete analytic precedent study.
The purpose of precedent study in architecture is to have an understanding of what has been done
before, and use that knowledge to help define and develop your own design concepts. Perhaps
even more important is to understand and convey the ideas and concepts behind the work. As a
designer, your background and experiences are extremely important, as these experiences influence
what you bring to each design. Precedent study is a valuable criterion and guidelines as a way to
expand and supplement these personal experiences. As you know more and understand what, why
and how great architects have designed, you will be capable of producing a richer and more
meaningful design solution.
You are required to analyse and understand 1 architect and a house that relate to your selected
keyword. You must ensure that you have a clear understanding of the general design thinking of the
architect that is implemented in the house as well as characteristics that make the house a work of
art. Just analysing the form does not qualify as a good analysis.

TASK 01

5%

1. Select a spatial formation keyword from below:

2. Find an object / product / phenomena that relate to this spatial formation.

Analyse this object to understand how with this volumetric manipulation, this object shall result
in a new function and value.
Then, produce an creative image of this object to show its main idea (visual collage) and
follow with an diagrammatic infographic to show how spatial formation is relate to this object.
Main question you need to tackle in this exercise:

How the this object form with the spatial condition?

How does spatial formation make sense of this object, transformed or makes it better ?
How does the spatial change manipulate the usage of the object?
e.g. does it manipulate the way it move? Does it manipulate the way it contain?

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. 2 x A3 square infographic board.
- An creative image of the selected
item / product / phenomena
- An Infographic with diagrammatic explanation
of how SPATIAL FORMATION has transform the item.
