1. Remove the spacer piece from the membrane units. Tapped holes are provided in the spacer piece flange as
jacking points, to assist in breaking the spigot/recess location.
2. Identify the driving and driven end transmission unit and fit it on the shaft.
For the fit hubs (hydraulic fitting) follow the usual procedure (customer's procedure). For the parallel bored and
keywayed hubs, John Crane France normally supply hubs machine to give a light interference fit with the
associated shaft. On fitting these hubs, expand hub bore by heating (without direct flam but a warm oil bath with
usually be adequate). Dont exceed
175 C / 352 F.
3. Check that the hub spigots are concentric to the centre of rotation to .05 mm / 0,002 inch T.I.R. (.025 mm /
0,001 inch TIR for coupling speed greater than 10000 rpm) or better and that the maximum run-out or swash is
within
.05 mm / 0,002 inch (.025 mm / 0,001 inch TIR for coupling speed greater than 10000 rpm)
It is advised to respect the alignement within 10 % or less of the values given on the general drawing.
4. When shims or shim-carriers are used see respectively appendix III and appendix IV.

flanges is equal to dimension 'x' as shown on appendix 1, thus enabling the spacer piece to be inserted between
the hubs.
7. Bring the spacer piece into position, between the membrane units. If the coupling is balanced be careful that
matched marks are in position.
8. Fit the spacer to one membrane unit and insert the bolts. It is important that the spigots and recesses be
engaged parallel and square to the flange faces, before tightening the bolts.
Tighten the bolts to the torque values given in appendix II.
Remove the gagging screws and repeat the above procedure on the remaining spacer/membrane unit interface.
DO NOT tighten the bolts with the gagging screws in position.
IMPORTANT The spacer piece must be supported throughout the above procedure to ensure that the weight is
never imposed on one bolted end only.
9. With the transmission unit bolted in position, check that the 'as fitted' concentricities correspond closely with
those quoted on the balancing certificate. If this document is not applicable ensure that all flanges are set up to
the centre of rotation as concentric as possible. A figure of .05 mm / 0,002 inch T.I.R. (.025 mm / 0,001 inch
TIR for coupling speed greater than 10000 rpm) should not be exceeded.
10. Safely store the gagging screws and sleeves for future use.

5. Bring the transmission unit into position between the hubs. If a balanced coupling has been supplied the
reference marks on the flanges must be lined up.
6. Remove the gagging screws and insert the hub bolts.
It is important that the spigots and recesses be engaged parallel and square to flange faces before tightening the
bolts.
Tighten the hub bolts to the torque values given in appendix 2.

1. Under normal operating conditions no servicing or maintenance should be necessary. Periodically the bolts
should be checked for tightness and the membranes inspected. If the hubs or shafts have been disturbed for any
reason alignment must be checked.
Any dismantling or repairs work on the membrane units will invalidate the dynamic balance.
2. In case of trouble it is absolutely necessary to find the reason, prior to restart the unit.
Excessive misalignment or over load or both combinaison could be a reason of this damage.
3. It is recommended that on all bolted assemblies using self locking nuts be replaced after 5 dismantlings.

APPENDIX III
1 - Before the assembly of the shims spacer :
T-GE
T-JE
The dimension between the flanges of the transmission units (T-GE) or, the hub flanges must be measured (see
figure 1).
2. Compare the 2 measured dimensions to the values given in the drawing shims table.
Take the closest value which indicates the number of shims to use.
3. When possible, the shims must be divided on each side of the spacer or transmission unit and located on
spigots.
4. It is impossible to use a number of shims geater than the number given on the general arrangment drawing (in
case of anomaly, refer to JOHN CRANE FRANCE).
5. Carry on the coupling assembly following paragraph 3 of the general instructions procedure related to the
coupling.

APPENDIX IV
SHIMS AND SHIMS-CARRIER
1.
T-GE
T-JE
The dimension between the fLanges of the transmission units (T-GE) or, the hub flanges must be measured (see
figure 1).
2.Compare the 2 measured dimensions to the values given in the drawing. shims table.
Take the closest value which indicates the number of shims to use.
Nota : JOHN CRANE FRANCE advises before disassemble shims carrier to check if the control dimensions can't
be achieved through a modification of the shims outside the spacer - shims carrier component.
(if the latter is already assembled with the number of shims related to the nominal thickness, see the general
arrangement drawing) .
Page 12

Ed. 01.2003
2nd case
The number of shims is greater than the number indicated for the nominal dimension written an shims table.
1. put between the spacer and the shims-carrier, the number of shims corresponding to the nominal value or to the
thickness written on the general arrangement drawing.
2. procede to the assembly of the shims carrier as indicated in 1st case.
- If required, fit the remaining shims in the spigots of the transmission unit hubs.
3. It is impossible to use a number of shims greater than the number given on the general arrangment drawing (in
case of anomaly, refer to JOHN CRANE FRANCE).
4. Carry on the coupling assembly following paragraph 3 of the general. instructions procedure related to the
coupling.
