At its first annual Community Benefit Rummage Sale on April 17, 2010, the Owensboro Board of
REALTORS® received donated items ranging from antique photographic equipment to Banjos and raised over
$1,000 to benefit the Daniel Pitino Shelter and the Owensboro Help Office.
The Pitino Shelter provides emergency and transitional housing to single women and their families, and
depends heavily upon the generosity of churches, businesses, individuals, schools and the community to make a dif-
ference in the lives of homeless families in Owensboro. The Shelter also supports the Saint Stephen Cathedral Soup
Kitchen and McAuley Clinic.
The Owensboro Help Office provides emergency funds, food and clothing to area residents in need.

Yet, more taxes are in fact being considered in
the Kentucky state legislature, except they will
not likely be unveiled until after the November election. If imposed, these new taxes will increase
costs associated with an immense list of services including:

child and family day care; repair of automobiles, RVs, boats, motorcycles, bicycles, trucks, trac-
tors, lawn mowing equipment, farm machinery, construction and manufacturing equipment,
and tools; all services to residential (home) and commercial buildings including: carpentry,
masonry, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, roofing, painting, water/well, septic
systems, security systems and driveway repair; book keeping, payroll and tax preparation and
accounting services; repair of appliances, computers, printers and all other electronic products;
laundry and dry cleaning services; beauty salon and hair care services; legal services and at-
torney fees; waste management, trucking, and excavating services; shoes, clothing, dress repair
and tailoring; photographic services; engineering and architectural services; taxi/limousine
service; home buying and selling services including: brokerage, title work, surveys, inspections,
credit reports, appraisal and closing services; storage and warehousing; “document prepara-
tion”/photo copying, business services and phone call centers; sporting services; and many
more.

This list is not all–inclusive. It is only a partial list.

When you think of whom could least afford an increase in the cost of living, people with low in-
comes, the unemployed and elderly, or financially struggling families likely come to mind. However,
it is precisely these groups of people that will be hurt the most. All consumers will have to pay this
new tax.

Another segment of our community that can least afford a cost increase is business…large or small.
This service sales tax can only contribute to further job losses in the Kentucky economy.

The Owensboro Board of REALTORS® opposes this new tax. If, as anticipated, the Kentucky
legislature brings this proposal to the floor for a vote, every citizen of this community and state
