McCrory signs executive order over anti-LGBT law

Pressure over House Bill 2
mounting since it took eect
By Chris Johnson
cjohnson@washblade.com
Faced with continued pressure to
undo the North Carolinas newly enacted
anti-LGBT law, North Carolina Gov. Pat
McCrory on Tuesday signed an executive
order to mitigate the opposition, although
LGBT advocates say its not enough.
The directive, known as Executive Order
93, as noted in a news statementon one
handmaintains common sense genderspecic restroom and locker room
facilities in government buildings and
schools, which indicates transgender
people will still be barred from using
public restrooms in those places
consistent with their gender identity.
On the other hand, the order prohibits
anti-LGBT discrimination among state
employees, arms the private sectors
right to establish its own restroom and
locker room policies, arms businesses
right to establish non-discrimination
policies in employment and seeks
legislation to reinstate the right to sue in
state court for discrimination.
After listening to peoples feedback
for the past several weeks on this issue,
I have come to the conclusion that
there is a great deal of misinformation,
misinterpretation, confusion, a lot of
passion and frankly, selective outrage and
hypocrisy, especially against the great
state of North Carolina, McCrory said in
a statement. Based upon this feedback,
I am taking action to arm and improve
the states commitment to privacy and
equality.
McCrory signs the executive order amid
continued consternation over House Bill
2, which bars cities from enacting proLGBT non-discrimination ordinances and
transgender people from using public
restrooms in schools and government
buildings consistent with their gender
identity.
LGBT advocates criticized the executive
order as an insucient way to make up
for the damage HB 2 has done in terms
of enabling discrimination and economic
cost to the state.
Sarah Preston, acting executive director
of the American Civil Liberties Union of
North Carolina, said the executive order
is poor eort to save face after signing
HB 2into law.
With this executive order, LGBT
individuals still lack legal protections from
discrimination, and transgender people
are still explicitly targeted by being forced
to use the wrong restroom, Preston said.
Preston added the only real solution
for McCrory is guiding the legislature to

North Carolina Gov. PAT MCCRORY

repeal HB 2 and put in its place a state

law prohibiting anti-LGBT discrimination.
Eorts to divide the LGBT community
by extending limited protections but
leaving in place the rules mandating
discrimination against the transgender
community will only strengthen our
resolve to ght back against this
discriminatory and misguided legislative
action, Preston said. We call on
Gov. McCrory and the North Carolina
legislature to repeal House Bill 2 and
replace it with full non-discrimination
protections for all LGBT people.
Lambda Legal, the ACLU and the
ACLU of North Carolina last month led
a lawsuit challenging House Bill 2 on the
basis it violates equal protection under
the U.S. Constitution and the prohibition
on gender discrimination under Title IX of
the Education Amendments of 1972.
Kate Kendell, executive director of
the National Center for Lesbian Rights,
condemned the executive order via a
Twitter post from her organization.
Candis Cox-Daniels, a Raleigh-based
trans advocate, said the executive order
does not seem to address the problems
presented by the anti-LGBT law.
The governor has still rejected the
opportunity to say that House Bill 2 and
all of its components are discriminatory
and do not align with the United States
constitution nor the overwhelming
opposition expressed by North Carolina
citizens and business, Cox-Daniels said.
I see this order as nothing more than yet
another ambiguous statement that is not
founded in facts and only seeks to save
face of an elected ocial as he prepares
for reelection.
Tyler Deaton, senior adviser for the

Republican pro-LGBT American Unity

Fund, was more forgiving and thanked the
governor for signing the directive, although
he acknowledged it should only be the start
of the process to repeal the law.
This is a major milestone for North
Carolina and it represents the start of
a reconciliation process that needs to
take place in the aftermath of HB2,
Deaton said. The executive order itself
references current anti-transgender law
imposed by HB2, which is just another
reminder of how sweeping and harmful
HB2 is. All eyes now turn to the General
Assembly as it reconvenes later this
month. They must continue the process
of reconciliation and the only way to do
that is to repeal HB2.

UNC may be violating

Obama executive order

Two seemingly unrelated events on

LGBT rights happened last week that
upon closer look had signicant bearing
on each other.
First, the University of North Carolina
system declared it would comply with
HB2. University of North Carolina
President Margaret Spellings, known for
expressing anti-LGBT views as a former
ocial in the Bush administrations
Department of Education, announced the
change in a Q&A guidance to chancellors.
Second, the one-year anniversary of
the eect date of President Obamas
Executive Order 13672, which bars federal
contractors from engaging in anti-LGBT
workplace discrimination, passed. Any
contractor who entered new agreements
to do at least $10,000 a year in business
with the U.S. government since April 8,

2015, is subject to the anti-bias rules

under the order.
The events are related because,
as a Washington Blade investigation
discovered, the University of North
Carolina is a federal contractor. Therefore,
the school system could be subject to
penalties if it discriminates against LGBT
workers, such as by complying with HB 2
and prohibiting trans workers from using
restrooms consistent with their gender
identity.
According to USASpending.gov, the
University of North Carolina won more
than $2 million in federal contracts
between 2008 and 2016. For each scal
year from scal years 2010 through 2016,
the university won more than $10,000 in
federal contracts, which surpasses the
nancial threshold of having to meet
requirements under Executive Order
13672.
One contract in particular awarded
on June 22, 2015, after the eect date of
the executive order, is valued at $13,090,
which is enough to trigger penalties
under the executive order. The National
Institutes of Health awarded the contract
to the University of North Carolina, Chapel
Hill, for medical and laboratory testing.
The U.S. Department of Labor is among
the agencies conducting a review of HB
2, which may result of a loss of federal
funds for the state. Critics say the law
contravenes Title VII of the Civil Rights
Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education
Amendments of 1972, but the review at
the Labor Department could also take
into account whether the University of
North Carolina is in violation of Executive
Order 13672.

Judge dismisses gay D.C. cops lawsuit

Police ocials belatedly
complied with ocers
FOIA request
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
A D.C. Superior Court judge on April
8 dismissed a lawsuit led last October
by gay Metropolitan Police Ocer Justin
Markiewicz seeking to force police ocials
to turn over email and phone records
he had sought through a Freedom of
Information Act request.
But Markiewiczs attorney disclosed
following the ruling by Judge John
Campbell that police ocials belatedly
complied with Markiewiczs FOIA request
in late February and provided him with the
emails and phone records he requested.
The attorney, Matthew LeFande, said
Markiewicz decided to continue the lawsuit
after police turned over the requested
documents because a ruling by the court
that police initially failed to comply with
the request until a lawsuit was led would
require the D.C. government to pay his
legal expenses related to the lawsuit.
Campbells ruling was the latest in a
series of developments surrounding
claims by Markiewicz that he has been
targeted for anti-gay discrimination and
retaliation by police ocials after ling an

internal discrimination complaint against

a captain who served as his supervisor.
David Mariner, executive director of
the D.C. Center for the LGBT Community,
provided an account of Markiewiczs
internal police complaint in a message on a
GoFundMe site he created in early March.
In that message, Mariner said Markiewicz
was in the midst of a costly legal battle
with the Police Department over

retaliation he encountered after he led

a complaint charging he was subjected to
repeated homophobic remarks.
Sources familiar with the complaint
have said it accuses a captain who
headed the departments then-Gay and
Lesbian Liaison Unit, of which Markiewicz
was a member, of repeatedly referring
to Markiewicz as Justine in face-to-face
conversations and in email messages.
Some of the emails reportedly were sent
to D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier.
Lanier is among the police ocials
whose emails were sought in Markiewiczs
FOIA request.
Meanwhile, sources familiar with
Markiewiczs role on the GLLU, before
he requested to be transferred out of
the unit, say he has also led a sexual
orientation discrimination complaint
against the department with the D.C.
Oce of Human Rights. The police
emails and phone records associated
with text messages he has requested
reportedly are needed to substantiate his
discrimination complaint.
The DCOHR has a policy of not publicly
disclosing whether a complaint has
been led until the oce completes an
investigation of the complaint and makes
a determination that probable cause exists
the alleged discrimination occurred. If
probable cause is found, the oce has the
option of arranging for a public evidentiary

hearing similar to a trial before the citys

Commission on Human Rights.
In announcing his decision to dismiss
the FOIA lawsuit at an April 8 status
hearing, Campbell said he was required
by law to grant a motion by D.C. Attorney
General Karl Racine, who represents the
police department, to dismiss the case
on grounds that LeFande missed the
deadline for ocially serving legal papers
notifying the city about the suit.
LeFande disputes the claim that his
oce missed the deadline. He argued at
the hearing that he arranged for the legal
papers to be served to the mayors oce
in accordance with rules he says were
established by a previous decision by the
D.C. Court of Appeals.
Campbell said the D.C. attorney
generals oce acted appropriately by
declaring that the mayors oce had
established that it no longer accepts
service for lawsuits against the city and
that such service must be delivered to the
oce, which represents the mayor and all
city agencies in court.
Racine argues in his motion to dismiss
the case that by the time LeFande
arranged for the legal papers to be
served to the D.C. attorney generals
oce on Jan. 4 they were seven days past
the deadline of Dec. 28.

Veteran LGBT activist Jerry Clark dies at 74

National LGBTQ Task Force
board member backed
D.C. statehood
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Jerry N. Clark, an attorney, union health
and pension fund director, and health
care benets consultant in Washington
who for years served as an advocate
for the cause of LGBT rights and D.C.
statehood, died April 9 at Virginia Hospital
Center in Arlington. He was 74.
His sister, Melinda Rider, said the cause
of death was complications associated
with a severe head injury sustained from
a fall in January at his home of 40 years in
D.C.s Adams Morgan neighborhood.
Jerry was a progressive with an
unwavering vision of equality for all
people, said Rea Carey, executive director
of the National LGBTQ Task Force, for
which Clark has served as a member and
co-chair of its board of directors.
He will be remembered for his

leadership, but also for his kindness and

compassion, Carey said in a statement.
Surely the world is a better place having
had his talents, and we are beholden to all
that Jerry contributed to the movement.
Among his numerous involvements in
progressive political causes, Clark served
as chair of the D.C. Statehood Coalition,
political director of D.C. For Democracy
and a board member of the local group
Stop Gun Violence.
He has served as co-chair of D.C.s
Whitman-Walker Healths spring gala,
a trustee for the Law and Society
Association and a member of the
Democratic National Committees Gay
and Lesbian Leadership Council.
Former D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray
appointed Clark to the Mayors Committee
on the 50th anniversary of the 1963
March on Washington. In recent years
Clark was one of the lead organizers of
an LGBT contingent in the citys annual
Martin Luther King Day parade.
In 2014, the D.C. Gay and Lesbian
Activists Alliance presented Clark with its
Distinguished Service Award for what it
called his exemplary and dedicated work

on behalf of LGBT equality.

Time and again on issue after issue,
Jerry can be found lending his expertise
and oer a hand, said then-GLAA Vice
President for Administration Kevin Davis.
His energy and commitment are an
example to others.
Clark was born and raised in Muncie,
Ind. He graduated in 1959 from Muncies
Burris School, which he attended from
kindergarten through 12th grade,
according to Rider. Rider said he received
his bachelors degree from Princeton
University, a law degree from the
University of Chicago and completed his
doctoral studies in political science at the
University of Minnesota.
He came to Washington in 1973 to work
as a legal assistant at the Department of
Justice under then-U.S. Attorney General
Elliot Richardson. A short time later
Clark began work at the Washingtonbased United Mine Workers Health and
Retirement Funds, Rider said, where he
spent the major part of his career as its
executive director.
In recent years, Rider said, he did
consulting work in the area of health care

benets and health care cost containment.

He was so committed to making things
better and never needed the spotlight,
said gay activist and former White House
aide Dave Noble. A real loss but what a
beautiful legacy.
Clark is survived by his sisters Alma
Marie Osborn of Boise, Idaho; Betty Hunt
of Summereld, Fla.; and Melinda Rider of
Greensboro, Ga.; and his brother Parnell
David Clark of Battle Creek, Mich. He was
predeceased by his parents Parnell David
Clark, Sr., and Alma Clark.
Earl Fowlkes, president of the Gertrude
Stein Democratic Club, D.C.s largest local
LGBT political organization, said Clark was
a longtime active member of the club.
I have known Jerry for almost 20 years
and in that time Ive seen him work in all
communities, especially Gertrude Stein,
to push for D.C. statehood, said Fowlkes.
He was a man for all seasons and will be
missed by all who knew him.
Rider said plans for a memorial
celebration of Clarks life will be
announced shortly. She said contributions
in remembrance of Clark can be made as
a gift to Whitman-Walker Health.

LGBT Jewish group holds D.C. events

WASHINGTON More than 60 people from around the world attended a series
of events that the World Congress of GLBT Jews organized in D.C. this past weekend.
The World Congress of GLBT Jews events took place at the Washington D.C. Jewish
Community Center in Dupont Circle from April 8-10. Congregation Bet Mishpachah
and the Kurlander Program for GLBTQ Outreach and Engagement (GLOE) co-hosted
the organization.
U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commissioner Chai Feldblum and Rabbi
Laurie Green of Congregation Bet Mishpachah spoke at on April 8. Harry Samuels of
the American Jewish World Service and Gender Rights Maryland Executive Director
Dana Beyer discussed LGBT rights in the U.S. and around the world on April 10.
The World Congress of GLBT Jews also held its annual board meeting on April 10.
World Congress of GLBT Jews President Frank Giaoui told the Washington Blade
on April 10 that members of his organization from New York, Israel, France and
other countries attended the events.
Obviously there is some more to do in civil rights in the U.S., said Giaoui,
referring to eorts in support of equal access to employment and housing. In
some countries like Latin America and Central Europe and in Africa obviously the
civil rights are not there at all. So we also have to work for them.
The World Congress of GLBT Jews events took place less than three months after
protesters forced the cancellation of a reception at the National LGBTQ Task Forces
annual Creating Change Conference at which two Israeli activists were scheduled
to speak.

MCC moderator travels to Miss.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. The global moderator of the Metropolitan Community
Churches traveled to Mississippi on April 10 to criticize the states controversial
religious freedom law.
Rev. Nancy Wilson spoke at a press conference in Hattiesburg after attending
services at Joshua Generation MCC. Rev. Brandiilyne Mangum-Dear, who founded
the Dandelion Project, an LGBT support and advocacy group in Mississippis Pine
Belt, heads the congregation.
When they do this in the name of Christianity, they are perverting the gospel or
they havent read the gospels and have no idea who Jesus is, said Wilson.
The press conference took place ve days after Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant signed
the religious freedom bill House Bill 1523 into law.
Comedian Ellen DeGeneres and Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts,
who grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and came out in 2013, are among those
who have publicly spoken out against HB 1523. Bryan Adams announced earlier this
week that he had cancelled an April 14 concert in Biloxi over the religious freedom
law.

Puerto Rico marriage ban again struck down

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico A federal judge on April 7 struck down Puerto Ricos
same-sex marriage ban.
U.S. District Court Judge Gustavo A. Gelp issued his ruling hours after the 1st U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals rearmed the U.S. commonwealths same-sex marriage
ban is unconstitutional.
The 1st Circuit ruled last July in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that
extended marriage rights to same-sex couples throughout the country that Puerto
Ricos gay nuptials ban is unconstitutional. U.S. District Court Judge Juan PrezGimnez last month said the Obergefell ruling did not apply to Puerto Rico because
it is not a state.
In ruling that the ban is not unconstitutional because the applicable constitutional
right does not apply to Puerto Rico, the district court both misconstrued that right
and directly contradicted our mandate, said the 1st Circuit in its latest ruling.
Five same-sex couples; Lambda Legal and Puerto Rico Para Tod@s, a Puerto
Rican LGBT advocacy group, led a lawsuit against the U.S. commonwealths samesex marriage ban in 2014.
Prez-Gimnez dismissed the lawsuit, but the plaintis appealed the ruling to
the 1st Circuit. Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro Garca Padillas administration in 2015
announced it would no longer defend the same-sex marriage ban.
The 1st Circuit on April 7 ordered another judge to consider the case.

Clinton rallies in Baltimore

ahead of Md. primary
Maryland voters to cast
ballots on April 26
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
BALTIMORE Hillary Clinton rallied an
estimated 1,500 supporters in Baltimore
on April 10 with an LGBT-inclusive
speech urging them to head to the polls
in Marylands Democratic presidential
primary.
Standing before an image of a U.S. ag
bearing the message Made in America,
the candidate made the remarks at the
City Garage days before the New York
primary on Tuesday and roughly two
weeks before the Acela Primary, which
includes Maryland, on April 26.
Are we going to go forward with unity,
condence, optimism, roll up our sleeves,
get things done together, renew the
promise of America, deliver it everyone
willing to work hard for it, make sure that
our children each and every one of
them has a chance to live up to his or
her God-given potential? Or are we going
to be divided, set against one another, go
down false trails that lead nowhere, see
our countrys progress eroded? Clinton
said. Thats the choice in this election.
There is no other way to put it.
Clinton cautioned a Republican in the
White House would seek to turn back the
clock on all our rights, including human
rights, civil rights, gay rights, voting rights
and womens rights. Among other things,
Clinton said shed defend marriage
equality and work to end discrimination
against the LGBT community.
But Clinton went into more detail
on the issue of voting rights, saying it
is outrageous that in 2016 somebody
running for president has to talk about
their importance. Clinton recounted the
story of a 102-year-old woman she met in
South Carolina who wanted to vote, but
was unable to register because she had
no photo ID or birth certicate.
She said, Ive been living here all my

life. Isnt that enough? Clinton said. Yes,

it is enough, and were going to make it
enough once again.
Clinton also made the case Ted Cruz
and Donald Trump are dangerous
because of their anti-Muslim attacks,
drawing particular attention to Cruzs
plan to give police ocers authority to
investigate to Muslim neighborhoods.
How that would ever work, I would
have no idea, Clinton said. Theyre really
not held to any standard of reality. Its an
alternative universe.
A major focus of her remarks was the
economic prosperity under her spouse,
President Bill Clinton, and the recovery
under President Obama after the 2008
economic collapse. Laying out her
agenda, Clinton identied among other
things her desire for greater access to
transportation in places like Baltimore
so people in cities can get to the jobs
created during the recovery.
At times, Clinton seemed to be taking
a page from her rival for the Democratic
nomination Sen. Bernie Sanders (IVt.). The former secretary of state said
economic inequality should be a priority
and shed go after bad actors in the
nancial sector who caused the 2008
economic downfall.
But Clinton was also openly critical of
Sanders, saying his plan for tuition-free
college is unfair because it would allow
children of wealthy families, like Trumps
children, to attend college for free. The
plan is also unrealistic, Clinton said,
because while the federal government
would be required to pay two-thirds of
the cost, the states would have to pay the
remaining third.
I dont know about you, but a lot of
Republican governors dont look openly
enthusiastic about funding higher ed,
Clinton said. So when someone tells you
something is free, ask for the ne print
because I what I have proposed will be
achievable and create results almost
immediately.

Colombias high court issues landmark marriage ruling

Four South American
countries now allow
gay nuptials
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Colombias highest court on April 7
ruled that same-sex couples have the
right to marry.
Colombias constitutional court issued
its landmark 6-3 ruling nearly nine
months after it held a hearing on whether
to extend nuptials to gays and lesbians.
Colombia Diversa, a Colombian LGBT
advocacy group, in a press release said
the ruling established that marriage is the
only legal institution that addresses the
lack of protection for same-sex couples and
there is no basis to deny it. The landmark
decision also says that judges and notaries
must perform civil marriages for same-sex
couples who request them.

Same-sex couples can access the

institution of civil marriage with the same
rights, benets and the same responsibilities
that this institution aords to heterosexual
couples thanks to the Constitutional Court
of Colombia, said Colombia Diversa.
Anglica Lozano, a lesbian who was
elected to the Colombian Congress in
2014, also celebrated the ruling. Equality
is unstoppable, she said in a tweet she
posted to her Twitter page.
The New York City Bar Association and
the Impact Litigation Project at American
University Washington College of Law in
D.C. led briefs in support of marriage
rights for same-sex couples. Evan
Wolfson, founder of Freedom to Marry,
also submitted testimony ahead of the
July 30, 2015 hearing on the issue.
Im gratied that the court carefully
studied the issue, Hunter T. Carter of
the New York City Bar Association told
the Washington Blade during a telephone
interview shortly after he learned about

the ruling.
The court in 2011 ruled that same-sex
couples could register their relationships
within two years if Colombian lawmakers
did not pass a bill that would extend to
the same benets heterosexuals receive
through marriage.
Legislators in the South American
country subsequently defeated a samesex marriage bill.
A handful of gay and lesbian couples
in Bogot and other Colombian cities
have exchanged vows since the courts
deadline passed in 2013. Inspector
General Alejandro Ordez Maldonado
has challenged the rulings that allowed
them to marry.
The court last November issued a
landmark ruling that extended adoption
rights to same-sex couples.
The court was patient and gave the
Congress a chance to legislate, Carter
told the Blade. The failure to legislature
led to this legislation.

Ruling to have signicant

impact in Latin America
Same-sex couples can legally marry
in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Puerto
Rico, Mexico City and a handful of other
Mexican states.
Chiles civil unions law took eect last
October, but LGBT rights advocates in
the South American country continue
to lobby lawmakers to extend marriage
rights to same-sex couples. Members
of a Peruvian congressional committee
in 2015 tabled a bill that would have
allowed gays and lesbians to enter into
civil unions.
Carter told the Blade that the Colombia
ruling will have a signicant impact
throughout Latin America.
It is clear that this decision will have a
major eect, he said.

Pope Francis reaffirms church same-sex marriage opposition

LGBT rights advocates
sharply criticize document
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Pope Francis on April 8 rearmed the
Catholic Churchs opposition to marriage
rights to same-sex couples.
We need to acknowledge the great variety
of family situations that can oer a certain
stability, but de facto or same-sex unions, for
example, may not simply be equated with
marriage, said Francis. No union that is
temporarily or closed to the transmission of
life can ensure the future of society.
Francis made the statement in The
Joy of Love, a 256-page document he
released in the wake of last falls gathering
of Catholic bishops in Rome that focused
on the family.
The document notes the bishops
discussed the situation of families whose
members include persons who experience
same-sex attraction, a situation not easy
either for parents or for children.
We would like before all else to
rearm that every person, regardless of
sexual orientation, ought to be respected
in his or her dignity and treated with
consideration, while every sign of unjust
discrimination is to be carefully avoided,
particularly any form of aggression and
violence, said Francis. Such families
should be given respectful pastoral
guidance, so that those who manifest a
homosexual orientation can receive the
assistance they need to understand and

fully carry out Gods will in their lives.

Francis in the document describes
the allocation of foreign aid to countries
based upon whether they extend
marriage rights to same-sex couples as
unacceptable. The ponti also writes
an ideology of gender that denies the
dierence and reciprocity in nature of
a man and a woman and envisages a
society without sexual dierences poses
an additional challenge to the family.
This ideology leads to educational
programs and legislative enactments
that promote a personal identity and
emotional intimacy, radically separated
from the biological dierence between
male and female, said Francis.
LGBT rights advocates were quick to
criticize the document.
I dont think anybody was expecting
a celebration of same-sex marriage in
this document, Marianne Duddy-Burke,
executive director of DignityUSA, a group for
LGBT Catholics, told the Washington Blade
during a telephone interview. But theres just
a tremendous disconnect in how LGBT people
and others are seen by church ocials, up to
and including the pope himself.
Francis DeBernardo, executive director
of New Ways Ministry, a Maryland-based
group that ministers to LGBT Catholics,
expressed a similar sentiment.
The disappointment comes from the
fact that the only times he was specic on
LGBT issues were negative comments,
he told the Blade.
Kieran Rose, chair of the Gay and
Lesbian Equality Network, an Irish LGBT
advocacy group, in a statement described

the document as a missed opportunity

to reect and embrace the very positive
changes in attitudes towards lesbian and gay
people that have come about over the last
20 years in Ireland and across many parts
of the world. LGBT Federation of Argentina
Vice President Esteban Pauln described the
document as a new lost opportunity.
Pauln told the Blade from the Argentinian
city of Mendoza the Vatican released the
document a day after Colombias highest
courtissued a landmark rulingthat extended
marriage rights to gays and lesbians. The
first same-sex wedding at an Argentinian
synagogue took place earlier this week.
Pope Francis ratied the Vaticans
line that is contrary to the expansion of
rights, Pauln told the Blade.
Cardinal Donald Wuerl of the
Archdiocese
of
Washington
also
responded to Francis document.
Pope Francis arms that the common
life of husband, wife and children can be
steeped in and strengthened by sacramental
grace, wrote Wuerl ina blog post. For those
in irregular situations, continues the pope,
Christ inspires the church to turn to them
with love and affection to assist them in
overcoming the trials they face.

Vatican silent on anti-gay

Dominican cardinal
Francis was the then-archbishop of Buenos
Aires before he became pope in 2013.
The
Vaticans
tone
towards
homosexuality, marriage rights for samesex couples and other social issues has

become more moderate under Francis

papacy. LGBT Catholic organizations and
their allies are nevertheless quick to note
that church doctrine has not changed.
Francis and Russian Orthodox Church
Patriarch Kirill in February expressedtheir
opposition to marriage rights for same-sex
couplesin a joint declaration they signed
during their historic meeting in Cuba.
A number of LGBT people have claimed
they have been red from Catholic
institutions because of their marital status
in the wake of last Junes U.S. Supreme
Court ruling that extended marriage rights
to same-sex couples across the country.
The Vatican has yet to publicly respond to
Cardinal Nicols de Jess Lpez Rodrguez
of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingos
repeated use of homophobic slurs to
describe gay U.S. Ambassador to the
Dominican Republic James Wally Brewster.
Duddy-Burke told the Blade that she
had hoped Francis document would have
gone further in clearly renouncing any kind
of anti-gay rhetoric or public opposition to
equality measures. DeBernardo noted
the ponti did not make any specic
statements about laws that criminalize
consensual same-sex sexual relations.
Special U.S. Envoy for the Human Rights of
LGBTI Persons Randy Berry last November
during a visit to the Vatican dismissed
claimsthat foreign aid to African countries
depends upon whether they allow gays and
lesbians to legally marry.
DeBernardo pointed out to the Blade
that Francis repeated this claim in the
document he released on April 8.
Thats just not true, DeBernardo said.

aforementioned issues.
All Americans deserve to live life
free of discrimination irrespective
of race, gender, composition or sexual
orientation, writes Washington Center
Senior Vice President David Anderson on
his campaign website.

Brown, Pea-Melynk among

candidates for Edwards seat

Former Lieutenant Gov. Anthony Brown,

who is among the ve Democrats running
to succeed Edwards in Marylands 4th
Congressional District, supported the states
same-sex marriage and trans rights laws.
The Equality Maryland PAC endorsed
Brown in the states 2014 gubernatorial race.
The former lieutenant governor
rejected then-Attorney General Doug
Ganslers allegations that Equality
Maryland traded its endorsement
for his support of the trans rights bill.
Brown has also faced questions about his
commitment to marriage rights for samesex couples as lieutenant governor.
State Del. Joseline Pea-Melnyk (D-Anne
Arundel and Prince Georges Counties)

notes on her website that she sponsored

the 2012 same-sex marriage bill. She also
led eorts in support of Marylands trans
rights measure that became law in 2014.
I recognize my debt to Americas civil
rights leaders and protesters who won for
me the right to an equal place in our society
today, writes Pea-Melnyk, who was born
in the Dominican Republic. Thanks to them
weve made progress, but there is still more
to do and more inequality to ght. Thats why
I was proud to sponsor Marylands marriage
equality law and also fought hard for years
for legislation to prevent discrimination
against transgender Marylanders.
Former Prince Georges County States
Attorney Glenn Ivey notes his support of
marriage rights for same-sex couples on
his campaign website. He also indicates he
backs the Equality Act.
Discrimination on the basis of race,
sex, gender identity, sexual orientation,
age or any other classication has no
place in our country, says Ivey.
Iveys wife, state Del. Jolene Ivey (D-Prince
Georges County), was Ganslers running

County Democrat also played a leading

role in securing passage of measures two
years later that added gender identity to
Marylands nondiscrimination law.
Businessman David Trone notes in a
campaign ad that his company began
oering domestic partner benets to
employees more than a decade ago.
Kathleen Matthews, a former Marriott
International executive, notes on her
campaign website that anti-transgender
discrimination in employment and
housing is illegal in Maryland. The
former WJLA reporter who is married to
MSNBCs Chris Matthews said she would
co-sponsor the Equality Act, which would
add LGBT-specic language to federal
civil rights law, if elected.
I will work to ensure its passage and
look forward to serving as a co-sponsor
once elected, says Kathleen Matthews
on her campaign website.
State Del. Kumar Barve (D-Montgomery
County) was the chief sponsor of a 2011
same-sex marriage bill that narrowly died
in the Maryland House of Delegates. The
Montgomery County Democrat appeared

on The Kojo Nnamdi Show and in other

local media outlets to discuss his support of
the issue.
Will Jawando last fall donated two
campaign donations he received from
former Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO
Martin Shkreli to the Boys and Girls Club
of Greater Washington.

ocial, includes LGBT-specic issues on
his website.
He, like Kathleen Matthews, supports
the Equality Act. Rubin highlighted his

using public restrooms consistent with
their gender identity.

Son of anti-gay governor relocated to Texas after incident

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

a student at the University of Southern

Mississippi at the time went to the
bar with a group of other gay men. The
source told the Blade that it is an open
secret that the governors son is gay.
He was intoxicated and someone
asked him if he was, Phil Bryants faggot
gay son, said the source who asked
the Blade not to publish their name for
fear of retribution from the governor,
recalling the alleged incident. Obviously
people took oense to it.
The source said the man kept
antagonizing him to try to provoke Patrick
into a ght.
The source told the Blade that the man
pushed Patrick Bryant.
It wasnt really a fair ght, said the
source.
The source told the Blade that Patrick
Bryant moved to Austin, Texas, shortly
after the alleged incident took place.
He (Phil Bryant) knew that if
Patrick stayed, he knew eventually
everyone would realize Patricks gay
and it would come out during an
election and someone would try to use

it against him politically, said the source.

The Blade reached the Hattiesburg
Police Department on Monday. The
ocer who answered the phone did not
follow-up with information about the
alleged attack.
WLOX, a television station on
Mississippis Gulf Coast, reported that
Patrick Bryant helped decorate the
Governors Mansion for the holidays
in 2012. His LinkedIn page says he is
currently an interior designer for a rm in
Austin, Texas.

Robin Roberts: HB 1523

hurts my soul

The source spoke with the Blade two

days after Phil Bryant signed House Bill
1523, a sweeping religious freedom
bill that critics contend would allow antiLGBT discrimination in Mississippi.
Good Morning America co-anchor
Robin Roberts, who grew up in Pass
Christian on the Mississippi Gulf Coast
and came out as a lesbian in 2013,
appears on the cover of the states most
recent tourism guide. She criticized HB

1523 in a statement to WLOX.

My longtime partner, Amber, and I
have always felt welcomed in my home
state, and it hurts my soul to think
of anyone not feeling welcome, said
Roberts.
Ellen DeGeneres, who grew up in
Louisiana, is among those who have
also criticized Mississippis religious
freedom law. Spokespersons for the
Departments of Transportation, Health
and Human Services and Housing
and Urban Development told the
Blade last week that their respective
agencies
are
reviewing
the
controversial statute.
No business that serves the public
asks its customers if they are gay,
bisexual, transgendered or straight
before providing services, nor should
they, said Tim Wildmon, president of
the Mississippi-based American Family
Association, in an April 6 post to his
website. This is what opponents of our
new state law want you to believe. That
simply doesnt happen.
But any private small business owner
such as a baker, a photographer, a orist,
etc., should not be forced by the power of

the government to be an active participant

in a wedding ceremony or else be put
out of business, he added. Mississippis
new law protects these people from
having their lives ruined simply because
they are Christians.

Family thrown under the

bus for politics in Miss.

Speculation over Patrick Bryants sexual

orientation has persisted for years.
Mitchell Moore, owner of Campbells
Bakery in the Fondren neighborhood of
Jackson, told the Blade in 2014 shortly
after another religious freedom bill that
Phil Bryant signed took eect that the
governor enacted it because he had yet
to accept his sons homosexuality. The
source with whom the Blade spoke last
week said its an open secret that Patrick
Bryant is gay.
Neither Patrick Bryant nor his fathers
oce returned the Blades multiple
requests for comment for this story.
People will denitely throw their family
under the bus for politics (in this state,)
said the source.

Gender identity included in equal pay bill

The Maryland House of Delegates on April 9 passed the Equal Pay for Equal Work bill
that contains protections based on gender identity by a 133-33 vote margin. The measure,
in which the House concurred with Senate amendments, is now headed to Gov. Larry
Hogan who can either sign it, veto it or allow it to go into law without his signature.
House Bill 1003, whose lead sponsor is state Del. Kriselda Valderrama
(D-Prince Georges County,) prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender
identity; prohibits an employer from discriminating between employees in any
occupation by providing less favorable employment opportunities based on
sex or gender identity and provides that specied provisions of the bill do not
preclude an employee from demonstrating that an employers reliance on a
specied exception is a pretext for specied discrimination.
Its passage has been applauded by transgender equality advocates.
Yet again, the Maryland General Assembly arms what the overwhelming
majority of Marylanders believe, that it is common sense to provide Equal Pay
for Equal Work, regardless of a workers sex or gender identity, Jen Fischetti,
founding steering committee member of the Maryland Coalition for Trans
Equality, told the Washington Blade. This is changing Maryland for the better
and we invite Governor Larry Hogan to sign this bill into law.

Baltimores LGBT history to be discussed

ATTORNEY AT LAW

Louise Kelley and Richard Oloiza, author and editor of LGBT Baltimore, will
discuss the development of the Baltimore LGBT community from the 1960s
with photos and documents from university and organizational documents and
personal collections. The event, themed Baltimore History Evening, will take
place on April 21 at 7 p.m. at the Baltimore City Historical Society and Village
Learning Center, 2521 St. Paul St., Baltimore.
The University of Baltimore, which hosted a celebration of the recently
published LGBT Baltimore, indicated in a statement:
LGBT Baltimore is the result of an emerging archival eort to preserve
and catalog the history of gay culture in the city. For the nearby Mt. Vernon
neighborhood, a Baltimore cultural landmark with deep roots in the citys lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender culture, the preservation of these materials
signies an important contribution to sustaining the heritage of the community.

CHICAGO The Chicago Department of Health announced Tuesday that two new
cases of meningococcal meningitis have been conrmed in Chicago men, CBS reports.
There are now nine conrmed cases from the Chicago area linked to last summers
outbreak, all in men who have sex with men including one related death last June, the
article said.
Ocials said black men who have sex with men and are living with HIV have been
disproportionately aected. All men who have sex with men are urged to get vaccinated.
Since May of 2015, the Chicago Department of Health has distributed nearly 18,000
vaccinations of which 14,653 have been administered, CBS reports.
The disease spreads through the sharing of saliva and spit, such as in kissing or sexual
contact; or by sharing drinks, cigarettes, marijuana or other smoking devices.
Meningococcal disease also can lead to an infection of the bloodstream, resulting in
fatigue, vomiting, chills, cold hands and feet, severe aches, rapid breathing, diarrhea and
sometimes a dark purple rash, according to the CDC. Left untreated, meningitis can lead
to death within a few hours, according to the CDC.

New study nds lesbian-raised kids fare ne

PHILADELPHIA Children raised by same-sex female parents with a stable family life
show no dierence in general health, emotional diculties, coping and learning behavior
compared to children of opposite-sex parents in similarly stable relationships, a new study
published in the April issue of Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics nds.
Our study of households with no divorces or other family transitions nds that
spouse-partner and parent-child relationships are similar regardless of family structure,
researchers wrote. These strong relationships are important contributors to good child
outcomes not whether the parents are same-sex or dierent-sex.
The researchers identied 95 female same-sex parent households and 95 dierentsex parent households, matched for parent and child characteristics. The families were
drawn from a very large, nationally representative study, the National Survey of Child
Health.
The current study focused on households with no history of family instability,
discontinuity or transitions and was limited to parents who were raising their own children
since birth, without divorce, separation or adoption. Thus, the study minimized the impact
of family disruption on child well-being.
The results showed no dierences between the two groups in terms of spouse or
partner relationships, parent-child relationships or any of the child outcomes assessed.
The only dierence between the two groups of households was higher reported
parenting stress among the same-sex couples.

Study: Conversations can decrease transphobia

LOS ANGELES A roughly 10-minute, face-to-face conversation is enough to change
about onein 10 voters attitudes toward transgender people, according to a new study by
two California political science researchers, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The ndings, published in the journal Science, oer a template for canvassers looking
to more eectively reach out to voters who may have opposing beliefs, the Times reports.
The Miami-Dade County Commission passed an ordinance protecting transgender
people against discrimination in December 2014. SAVE, a south Florida LGBTorganization,
asked the Los Angeles LGBT Center to help them perform canvassing work on transgender
rights, the Times reports.
During the south Florida eort, David Broockman and Joshua Kalla, graduate students
at University of California Berkeley set up an experiment in which 56 canvassers went
door to door visiting 501 voters. About255 of them were asked to think of a time when
they had felt mistreated for being dierent, an exercise in analogic perspective taking, the
Times reports. The rest were part of a control group that the canvassers spoke to about
recycling. The researchers followed up with online surveys at three days, three weeks, six
weeks and three months, the article said.
The scientists found that those who were asked to do analogic perspective-taking were
signicantly more likely to exhibit a higher tolerance toward transgender people than
those who were in the control group. The eect, the researchers said, represented an
even greater attitude change than the shift in American attitudes between 1998 and 2012
toward gays and lesbians, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Canvassers did not have to be trans themselves to be eective, researchers reported.

Strategic conditioning
Hills, lunges rowing and more good techniques
By DAVID MAGIDA
Its race season once again, but this isnt going to be like previous years. This is the year
youre going to hit your PRs (personal records.) Youre going to become the runner youve
always wanted to be: faster, stronger and healthier. But what are you going to add to your
training to help you take that next step forward?
Old school training philosophies have always promoted high mileage as the path
toward running success. But there are other ways to prepare your body for the rigors of
a race. Here are a few training tips to improve your running and help you become a more
well-rounded athlete without piling on the mileage.

Head for the hills

Running hills is a great way to develop your leg power, speed and endurance. If you can
become comfortable running uphill, at running will feel like a breeze.
Try incorporating hill intervals at least once per week, running six to 10 climbs of 90
seconds to two minutes. Keep your pace relatively aggressive on the way up and recover
with a jog back down.
Tip: If you dont have a quality hill to train on, take it to the treadmill. There are classes
that incorporate treadmill intervals as part of their daily routine.

Founded in 1971, the Gay and Lesbian Activists
Alliance of Washington, DC (GLAA) is an all-volunteer,
non-partisan, non-profit political organization that
defends the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender people in the Nations Capital. GLAA
lobbies the D.C. Council; monitors government
agencies; educates and rates local candidates; and
works in coalitions to defend the safety, health and
equal rights of LGBT families. GLAA remains the
nations oldest continuously active gay and lesbian civil
rights organization.

Lunge for late-race strength

Theres nothing worse than your legs turning to jelly at the end of a race. Strength
training is key for holding it together at the end of races and lunges are a runners best
friend.
Once per week after your run, try adding ve to 10 sets of 50-100, gradually increasing in
number. Youll be pretty sore the rst few times, but youll improve your strength rapidly.
Tip: When lunging, focus on long strides, bending both the front and back knees as you
lower yourself down. Stand by driving through your lead foot.

Sponsors, Patrons, Benefactors,

Distinguished Sponsors and Underwriters
will be listed in the program book unless
otherwise requested. All tickets will be
held at the door.

Row your boat

Rowing is one of the best ways to develop strength in the glutes, hamstrings, quads and
lower back. Plus, its low-impact cardio, so a day spent on the rower is a day you dont need
to pound the pavement.
Try a adding a rowing double tabata once per week: eight rounds of 40-second sprints
with 20-seconds of rest in between.
Tip: Make sure you take a class somewhere to learn appropriate technique before
jumping into sprints.

Low plank for core strength

Building core strength is another great way to elevate your running. The low plank
utilizes muscle tension to improve strength and endurance and builds muscles that will
stabilize your entire body.
Start out with three rounds of 60-second low planks after every other run. Once that
becomes comfortable, extend it to two minutes.
Tip: Keep your forearms on the ground with your elbows directly beneath your
PROOF #1
shoulders. Keep your feet, hips and shoulders in one straight line.

races. Yet so often we nish a run and just head on home. Not anymore.
After your easy runs, take a few minutes to run six-10 of these short bursts. Each strider
should be about 80-100 yards long, starting easy, accelerating close to a sprint with long
strides for about 15 seconds, then decelerating for the last few seconds.
Tip: Strides are about getting comfortable with leg turnover and improving form, so
focus on quick feet, long strides, high knees and running tall.
Utilize these ve training tools consistently and you will nd your running changed
forever. Gone are the days when runners merely ran. The best runners in the world
are nding added benets from diversifying their training and you will too. Strength,
endurance, lactate threshold and late race speed can all be enhanced by adding these
elements to your training. And the greatest perk of all? Goodbye boredom, hello fun!

Businesses take a stand for LGBT rights

PayPal, Bank of America
among companies to
criticize N.C. law

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

North Carolinas anti-gay legislation

House Bill 2 is having strong repercussions on the economy in the state. Individuals, big business and the entertainment
community are speaking out against this
bill that legalizes discrimination.
Last June some in the LGBT community
were critical of the business community
having too large a role in some of our
Pride parades. Today we see again as we
did when anti-gay legislation was passed
and signed into law by Gov. Pence (R-Ind.)
why it is important for us to welcome allies in the business community who are
willing to stand with us.
According to the New York Times,

PayPal said it had dropped plans to put

in global operations center in Charlotte,
N.C., because of the states recent passage of a law banning anti-discrimination
protections based on sexual orientation
and requiring transgender people in government buildings and public schools to
use bathrooms that match the gender
on their birth certicates. PayPal had
pledged to bring 400 jobs and invest $3.6
million in the area by the end of 2017.
PayPal had already joined more than 120
other business leaders in signing a letter
to Mr. McCrory objecting to the law.
They went on to report, Some, like
Google Ventures chief executive, Bill
Maris, pledged not to make any new investments in the state until the law was
repealed. Other signatories included
Apple; Facebook and Charlotte-based
Bank of America, the largest corporation
in North Carolina. Mayors and governors
of other states, including New York, Vermont and Washington, D.C, have banned
most state-sponsored travel there.
WBTV.com reported the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) says four
conventions have ocially canceled their
dates in Charlotte, citing House Bill 2. Ofcials say that translates to 1,137 room
nights gone for hotels in Charlotte.
In addition to that, nine other conventions who were looking at Charlotte are

E DIT OR IA L C A R T OON

saying they will no longer be looking at

the city to be the host. Thats considered
a lost opportunity and translates into a
potential 12,231 room nights not used.
The CRVA also said 29 other groups
have now said they are hesitant about
bringing their convention to Charlotte. If
all these groups pulled out, thats 89,723
room nights that will be lost.
Since the Supreme Court declared
same-sex marriage constitutional, we
are seeing the backlash against the LGBT
community from people in states across
the nation from Mississippi to Maine. In
some states we and our allies are able to
ght back and defeat these bills before
they pass in others we will need to count
on the power of the almighty dollar to
help us.
The religious right and the far-right of
the Republican Party are ghting to their
last breath to hold back the tide of acceptance and trying to get government to legalize discrimination in any way they can.
Today the LGBT community can have no
better allies then big business and other
organizations, such as those who book
meetings and conventions, who stand
with us and ght to ensure we can gain
our full human and civil rights.
It is just one of the reasons the upcoming presidential election is so crucially
important. We cannot aord to go backwards which would happen faster than
anyone realizes if a Republican takes the
White House.
While I would have liked an even stronger statement than the one made recently by the CRVA, We are extremely concerned about the state legislation in place
as we continue to hear negative feedback
and potential event cancellations from
our customers. Our city has worked incredibly hard to build a thriving visitor
economy over the last 20 years, which
has welcomed major events and conventions that greatly give back to the city and
the state of North Carolinas economy
and overall quality of life. This issue is in
danger of setting us back from the progress weve made in positioning Charlotte
as an attractive, inclusive destination. Our
city has long had a track record of creating an environment that not only values
diversity, but strongly embraces it. On
behalf of the visitor economy that represents one in nine jobs across the Charlotte region, we strongly urge that state
and local leaders nd a resolution that
represents the best interests of our city
and state it shows us how economics will
make a dierence.
While some politicians always demonize big banks and big business as the enemy, it is time to recognize they are not
all the devil-incarnate and can also be important allies.

The curse of the Southern governor

Orval Faubus sought to block
integration of Little Rocks
Central High School
By BROCK THOMPSON
When I was a kid back in Arkansas, I used to prank call Orval Faubus.
Yes, that Orval Faubus. The same racebaiting southern governor that blocked
nine black students from entering Little
Rocks Central High School in 1957.Youve
seen the pictures.
I know what youre thinking, Brock,
just how old are you? Well, lets do the
math. I was 8 or 9 at the time. Orval Faubus was long retired a poor, brokendown, old man not living that far from us
in a strange looking sort of gingerbreadtype house with a bald front lawn in our
small town just outside of Little Rock. He
was also our bank teller for a brief while.
I was eight, he was approaching 80. So.
And may be also thinking, Brock, do you
feel bad for prank calling an octogenarian

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory harkens

back to then-Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus
who sought to block the integration of
Little Rocks Central High School
ex-governor of your state? No, not really.
Again, I was an 8 year old; and it wasnt exactly the heyday of my creative prowess. I
would mainly let the phone ring, hed answer, Id something stupid like, is the governah there ... giggle and then hang up.
Lately, theres been quite a lot of talk
about Faubus and his contemporaries,
such as unsavory characters like George
Wallace and Lester Maddox. Given recent
developments in places like Mississippi,
North Carolina, and now Tennessee, and
the signing of these red-herring religious
freedom laws and these idiotic bathroom
bills as they have come to be known, these
comparisons to the southern boogeymen
of our history books are quite appropriate.
William Faulkner said when it comes to

the American South, the past isnt dead and

buried. In fact, it isnt even past. We are essentially reminded of it everyday, like as a
child when Faubus was rst pointed out to
me counting pennies at a drive-thru bank
window. Faubus was once a good man
in many ways a southern progressive,
a New Dealer. It wasnt until later that he
sought to retain power by appealing to the
lowest common denominator in the state,
much like McCrory and Mississippis Phil
Bryant are doing now. Whatever good these
men did while in oce in many ways wont
amount to much when it comes to how they
play out in history not to mention how theyll
appear in the minds of their neighbors.
The South can be unkind in that way,
and history can a bit of an unforgiving bitch

as well. And while watching these sorts of

laws get enacted across the South may be
depressing and disheartening, take comfort in the fact that we will win in the long
run. Why are we seeing these sort of laws
now? These legislative temper tantrums
thrown in places like Mississippi and North
Carolina are just straight white males realizing that very soon, they will no longer be
in charge. And these recent attempts are
more or less just the revenge of evangelicals having to swallow the gay marriage pill
last summer. Sooner or later the men that
championed them will be an afterthought.
Like an old Orval Faubus as he appeared to
a small boy broke, broken, and a shell of
man. Sad to see in many ways.
I just hope theres a little pre-gay kid
our there willing to prank call an aged Pat
McCrory.
And hopefully that kid will be more creative.

Have we become hapless on helping the homeless?

D.C. leaders are focusing on
the wrong goal for housing
those in need

D.C.s once trail-blazing requirement

that the city provide emergency overnight
shelter during cold weather nights to those
needing and requesting it might now be
more an obstacle to helping the homeless
from a bigger-picture perspective.
You would have to turn over a lot of
rocks to nd anyone underneath who
thinks that the social service disaster
known as the city governments family
shelter at the old D.C. General Hospital
was anything other than a very expensive embarrassment or that ocials
shouldnt shut it down after creating a
better alternative.

Mayor Muriel Bowser, to her credit,

made that objective a signature activity
of her administration immediately after
taking oce a little over a year ago. The
plan was to shutter D.C. General and
open multiple smaller facilities scattered
throughout the city to provide better service delivery in a more conducive setting.
Bowser recently unveiled her plan and
the chosen sites nearly two months ago.
Each of the eight political wards would
host a small facility, with no site providing
shelter for more than 50 families, involving
the development of seven new shelters
in addition to one already designated for
midtowns Ward 2. In fact, what is being
proposed is no longer referred to as shelter but temporary housing as if a public relations rm thought nomenclature
would mitigate the inevitable objections
among some living in close proximity.
Cue the naysayers and critics.
The proposal is now sinking in quicksand, threatening implementation certainly on an expeditious timetable. Slick
NIMBY online video campaigns have been
launched, battles are being waged, and
public debate lls the air.
There are reasons to be wary. If nothing else, the jaw-dropping cost of the current service provision at D.C. General is

now exceeded by the face-palming price

tag for the replacement plan. Rather than
merely outrageous monthly costs per
family of approximately $4,600 for dormitory accommodations, the price tag has
leapt to an astounding gure of $6,500 or
more per month for nicer dormitory digs.
Rent me an expansive luxury penthouse apartment with accompanying
amenities for that price and Id be a very
happy resident.
Were talking a $660 million taxpayer
cost over 30 years, to replace the existing
shelter for 270 families, and for leased
properties in ve of the seven wards given that only two of the sites, in Wards 7
and 8, utilize city-owned land. And after
a couple decades or slightly more, these
leases all expire, returning the sites to the
owners.
This being Washington, accusations
are being hurled that the mayor is paying o campaign contributors with toopricey deals to acquire land and construct
buildings. First nd me a developer who
isnt engaged in supporting political candidates and then well talk.
Plus that ol community curse that no
one area can become a dumping ground
for less-than-desirable city functions, no
matter how abundant or aordable the

available land or buildings, is going to jack

up the price when youre searching for
something in pricier and densely lled-tothe-gills parts of town. Any gay realtor can
tell you that.
The District government has also hit
its allowed debt limit, precluding the ability to buy and build. The credit card for
city leaders has a borrowing cap and
theyve now maxed that plastic out.
But by focusing solely on the provision
of emergency shelter, instead of what the
homeless really need, were spending a
whopping amount of public funds to not
solve the real issue.
Have we become hapless on helping
the homeless?
Why not do what other cities are successfully engendering through innovative
private sector and faith-based collaborations, including the use of public funds,
and construct, you know, actual housing
for the homeless?
Maybe some government-nanced
private development would bring down
the per-dorm-room cost below that of a
mortgage for a more-than-million-dollar
home.
If were going to spend this much money, shouldnt actual housing be the actual
goal, and the end result?

LOCALS WEIGH IN ON POPULAR SECOND-HOME SPOTS

By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
Morning person or night owl? Butch or
femme? Mountain person or beach lover?
Of course, life is never totally black and
white, but for many D.C.-area LGBT folks,
the most popular second-home spots come
down to where you like to spend either your
downtime or your retirement years.
Lost River, W.Va., an unincorporated
community in West Virginias Hardy
County along Route 259, is about a twohour drive from Washington and has
become a sort of unocial rural gay area
in recent years. Gay life in Rehoboth
Beach, Del., of course, is well established.
When D.C. gays go to the beach, more
often than not, its to Rehoboth. Trac
can be dicey, especially on Friday and
Sunday evenings in the summer, but its
about a two-and-a-half-hour/120-mile
drive from Washington.
We asked locals why they chose one or
the other.
Peter Rosenstein, Blade columnist
and owner of PDR and Associates, has
been in Washington since 1978 and
bought a home in Rehoboth Beach in
1998. He spends about 15 percent of his
time at the beach.
Life in Rehoboth Beach is relaxed and
fun great restaurants, great people,
shopping and, of course, the ocean and
white sandy beach.
He says visit friends and spend time
looking at dierent neighborhoods
before making a purchase. And nd a
good realtor.
Ive been going to Rehoboth since the
early 80, he says. The only mistake I
made was waiting so long to buy my own
place. I also nd that D.C. people are
friendlier and more relaxed when theyre
in Rehoboth Beach.
Paul Yandura and Donald Hitchcock
have been together 18 years and now
split their time between Washington and
Wardensville, W.Va. They bought a home
in Columbia Heights in 2001 and a cabin
in Lost River in 2008. In 2013, they bought
a store called Lost River Trading Post. A
small house next to the store houses Lost
River Real Estate.
I consider myself and I think Donald

Lighthouse Harry Lee Cabin, a historic home in Lost River State Park.
PHOTO BY JUSTIN WILCOX; COURTESY OF WIKIMEDIA

considers himself more of a mountain

person than a beach person, Yandura
says. I grew up in Detroit and all our trips
outside of downtown were to the lake, so
I like lakes, mountains and rivers more
than oceans and beaches.
He calls Lost River very laid back and
very welcoming. Gay people, he says,
have been here for years. He stays there
full time and is loving it. Hitchcock goes
back and forth.
West Virginia cabins, he says, are overall
much more aordable than houses at the
beach. He puts a very nice cabin option
at about $300,000; top-of-the-line might
be in the $400,000 range while something
comfortable with a view can still be had
for less than $200,000.
And you can still swap houses with
someone who spent $900,000 on a beach
house for your $300,000 mountain cabin
without the expense and upkeep and
without having to go in with others,
Yandura says. It all depends what you
want. Also, out here in West Virginia, you
can enjoy your cabin all year round.
He says Wardensville and Lost River

Valley are bustling in the spring and

summer with plenty of outdoor activities.
The views in the fall are spectacular and
even winter is nice.
Nothing beats cozying up to a large
stone replace and taking in the mountain
vistas, he says.
Trout Pond National Park, Lost River
State Park, the George Washington
National Forest Trails, restaurants and
shops, bars and even an art co-op add to
the appeal, he says.
A. Toni Young lived in Washington
most of her life but for the last four years,
has spent half her time in Lost River. She
says she always thought of herself as a
beach person until she found Lost River.
She runs a non-prot and a housewares
business.
Although it is primarily gay white
men until a few months ago, I was the
only black lesbian here, also known as
the black lady, but a couple lesbian
couples have moved in down the road
and are interracial, Young says. You can
nd gay African-Americans, great dinner
parties, movie nights in the summer,

biking, hiking, Kentucky Derby parties

you name it, we have it here.
Before you buy, she says gure out
if you want to be near the water or
someplace more woodsy. Also think
about whether youre willing to put time
in on a xer-upper or if you just want to
move in. Also consider how much time
you want to invest in upkeep.
I never thought this kid from Southeast
D.C. would nd joy in the four hours I spend
on a riding mower, but I do, she says.
The folks in Lost River are family, she says.
I had my pipes freeze and burst and
a neighbor, his brother and some guy
I didnt know, showed up at my house,
pulled down dry wall, stopped the leak
and called the plumber and made sure I
wasnt overcharged, she says.
Last month, Bob Kabel sold the
Kalorama condo hed owned for 16 years.
Hes had a house in Rehoboth Beach
for 14 years. Two years ago, he bought
another in Lost River with a friend.
I like both, he says. Theyre strikingly
dierent experiences. There is much
more to do in Rehoboth than in Lost
River, but they both provide a welcome
getaway from D.C.
He says gay life permeates Rehoboth
and says its a madhouse in the summer.
Its actually more enjoyable and not so
crazy during the o season, Kabel says.
He enjoys hanging out with Yandura
and Hitchcock at the Trading Post and
says outdoor sports and hiking are great
there, if youre into that. Going out options
are limited, but thats not the draw.
Lost River LGBT life centers around
individual homes, he says. Nice weather
brings people there. Winter, not so much.
He agrees Lost River is much more
aordable.
Kabel says make sure any mortgage
broker you work with has everything
covered. Hed previously bought a condo
in Rehoboth and learned his broker had
neglected to submit his loan application.
He says the mortgage process for the Lost
River house was long and almost painful.

Whats Washingtons best nightspot,

Bar Dupont in the Dupont Circle Hotel
is my ideal night out. They have huge
windows that you can prop up against and
people-watch for hours. They also have
surprisingly great (albeit strong!) cocktails.
Describe your dream wedding.
I got married late last year in what to
me was the perfect wedding. We got
married at the Bowlingly Estate which

a D.C. wedding but without a lot of the
formality that no one enjoys.

Trever Faden
The Atlas Lane founder answers 20 gay questions
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
Trever Faden made a dream reality last month with the launch of Atlas Lane, a new
company he hopes will revolutionize the world of property management.
I started Atlas Lane after having to sell a rental property because I couldnt nd a
good-enough property manager and decided that somebody needed to x property
management, the Roslyn, N.Y., native says.
Atlas Lane (atlaslane.com) is a hub to connect quality tenants who pay on time with
landlords committed to proactive maintenance, property compliance, 24-7 support and
more.
We identied the biggest stressors related to owning a rental property and solved
them, Faden says. Think what Compass/Redn are doing for real estate but instead
for property management.
Faden came to Washington six years ago for school at George Washington University.
He lives with husband Allen Gannett (of the online marketing rm TrackMaven) in Shaw
and enjoys small side projects, playing the ukulele, walking his dog and hanging out with
friends in his free time.

How long have you been out and who

was the hardest person to tell?
Six years. The hardest person to tell
was the rst person I told. She was my
best friend in college. I had become so
complacent with the idea of not coming
out but at some point I realized that I

had to be my authentic self.

Whos your LGBT hero?
It may be clich, but as a tech
entrepreneur, having Tim Cook, the CEO
of the worlds largest company, be a gay
man is incredibly empowering.

What non-LGBT issue are

you most passionate about?
D.C. is an amazing city and one I think is
well situated to continue the wild growth
its seen over the last decade. As it
grows, I think its really important that we
grow smart. We need to continue to be
supportive of new developments, while
not losing historic character or ignoring
aordable housing issues.
What historical outcome
would you change?
The Citizens United Supreme Court
case. Money in politics is a disaster and
something that anyone who lives in D.C.
intimately knows is a problem.
Whats been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
The release of the iPod. Im a huge music
bu and the iPod launched this era in music
where it became incredibly easy to listen to
and discover vast amounts of music.
On what do you insist?
I insist on everyday being my full self and
empowering others to do so. I think the
ideal company is one that gives people
an ability to bring their authentic self to
work.
What was your last
Facebook post or Tweet?
An article about Atlas Lane, my new
property management startup.
If your life were a book,
what would the title be?
The Importance of Authenticity
If science discovered a way
to change sexual orientation,
what would you do?

Nothing. Im incredibly happy in my

life, have a great husband, friends and
community around me.
What do you believe in
beyond the physical world?
We all have a shared sense of right and
wrong. I dont know why or from where,
but I know it exists.
Whats your advice for
LGBT movement leaders?
As equality becomes more accepted in
the United States, its important that we
also keep the attention on the global
ght for equality. What is going on in
Russia is heartbreaking. Were so blessed
to live in a country that has made so
much more progress than that.
What would you walk
across hot coals for?
My family and friends and my
rambunctious 2-year old Corgi.
What LGBT stereotype
annoys you most?
The idea that every gay man is supposed
to be your friend to gossip with. I think
we need to let people be themselves and
not talk about them behind their backs.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
A Single Man, the movie Tom Ford
directed from the Christopher Isherwood
novel. I could watch it over and over
again. Its so, so sad, yet also a story of
hope and second chances.
Whats the most
overrated social custom?
Birthdays! Birthday parties seem so selfindulgent. We dont need an excuse to
have a party, lets just have a party!
What trophy or prize
do you most covet?
Right now, my head is so in the weeds
starting this new company. Its cheesy,
but a Yelp or Angies List service award is
my current xation.
What do you wish youd known at 18?
That coming out would be a catalyst in
my life to so much happiness.
Why Washington?
Its the perfect pace. New York is insane.
Boston and Chicago are too cold. San
Francisco is a tech echo chamber. D.C.
has the small town, big city feeling that
makes it feel so comfortable but also has
an incredible amount of opportunity.

A GUIDE FOR NEW BUYERS

By TED SMITH

Presumably, all rst-time home buyers

have heard the advice about speaking
to a lender to get pre-approved before
you start looking. This is good advice for
several reasons:
It sets your expectations about what
you can aord.
It allows you to move quickly when
you nd a home youd like to buy.
Sellers will require such a letter along
with your contract oer.
But here are several other things to
keep in mind.
1.
In a sellers market like todays,
there are very few if any bargains
for buyers.
2.
If something sounds too good
to be true, it probably is.
3.
Similarly, if something looks too
good to be true for the price, it probably
is. A picture is worth a thousand lies; thats
why God invented wide-angle lenses.
4.
However, its also a bad sign if
there are no pictures in the listing. Or
only a picture of the outside especially
if the home has been on the market for a
while.
5.
If a home has been on the
market for more than 90 days, theres
probably something wrong with it, or
its overpriced.
6.
The amount of drama in a real

represent both sides of a transaction.

9.
Loan ocers get paid to make
loans; underwriters get paid to prevent
bad loans from being made. Sometime
loan ocers and underwriters at the
same lending company appear to be
working at cross purposes.
10.
Appraisers and inspectors
are just doing their jobs, though it often
seems they are working against you.
Since youre paying for them as the buyer,
theyre actually working for you to make
sure you dont buy an overpriced lemon.
The most important guideline is this:
Keep your sense of humor throughout
the home-buying process. It will reduce
your stress through one of the most
potentially
stressful
(and
largest!)
nancial transactions of your life. And it
will keep you from getting too attached
to a property in case it doesnt work out.

MINIMALIST STAGE VERSION OF HIT PODCAST COMES TO LINCOLN

By MARIAH COOPER
mcooper@washblade.com
A oating cat in the mens room of a
radio station, a glow cloud joining an
elementary schools PTA and radio interns
dying or disappearing in mysterious ways
all happen in just a typical day in desert
town Night Vale.
The famed podcast Welcome to Night
Vale, co-created by Jerey Cranor and
Joseph Fink, has been compared to the
likes of NPR meets Twin Peaks. Mind
control, the Faceless Old Woman Who
Lives in Your Home and other surreal
events made this the most downloaded
podcast on iTunes in 2013. It consists
of radio host Cecil giving strange
announcements that occur in the town
and his ongoing love for Carlos the
Scientist who is investigating Night Vale.
The live show comes to the Lincoln

Theatre on Monday, April 18 and Tuesday,

April 19. It includes a live performance
of the script with no prompts or sets.
Musicians Danny Schmidt and Carrie
Elkin will open the show. The live show
will bring about all the shenanigans fans
have come to know and love from the
podcast. Actor Cecil Baldwin, who voices
Night Vale Community Radio announcer
Cecil, says even people who have only
heard an episode or two will be able to
follow along.
Its an Orson Welles War of the
Worlds-kind of mentality that this is what
radio theater is, Baldwin says.
Baldwin, a former D.C. resident who
now lives in New York City, believes the
simplicity of the show is what makes it so
popular.

No matter how young you are, how

adept at technology and how quickly you
Snapchat, theres a part of us that really
wants to be told stories that are well written
around the camp re, Baldwin says.
Its a very simple format of ,I just want
to sit down and have this person tell me a
story every two weeks and its lled with
people that Ive come to know and love or
hate, Baldwin says. Theres nothing new
about it except the form of the podcast.
And we are so grateful because if this
was on the radio it would be played once
and then it would be out of the airwaves
and that would be it. But because it is a
podcast people can listen to it all over the
world, as many times as they want.
Baldwin came on board with Night
Vale when he performed a monologue

about having a radio announcer voice

in his New York City theater company.
Fink, who helped with workshops for the
company, heard the monologue and told
Baldwin he had an idea for a podcast
about a radio host in a town where
every conspiracy theory you ever heard
is true. Fink lent Baldwin a microphone
who recorded a part in his apartment and
then returned it to Fink who gave Baldwin
the part.
The podcast popularity has since grown
and even spurned a novel Welcome to
Night Vale, written by Cranor and Fink,
that follows owner of Night Vale pawn
shop Jackie Fiero and treasurer of Night
Vales PTA Diane Crayton. The novel

CHRISTOPHER WAYNE, left, and MIKE TYLER say performing nude gave their show a novel twist
thats worked.

By KEITH LORIA
When dazzling audiences with their
collection of illusions and tricks, magicians
Mike Tyler and Christopher Wayne
clearly have nothing up their sleeves
or anywhere else on their body for that
matter as the dynamic duo perform
their magic in the nude.
The two best friends were already
successful comedy magicians in Australia
when the movie Magic Mike came out,
and people started making sexualized
magic jokes because of Tylers name.
We were talking about it and realized
that in the entire history of magic, nobody
had ever made a naughty magic show a
comedy magic show that grabs on to that
inner demon that every single person has
inside of them, Wayne says. We didnt
know for sure that it would work, but we
knew it was a dierent and clever idea.
In no time at all, the two both
straight were the talk of the magic
world and packing in audiences all over
Down Under.
We realized that magic had a cheesy
stigma attached to it that we wanted to
break down. What better way to break
the magic mold than to oer something
that had never been done before and
literally strip away the magic stereotypes
the top hats, capes, magic wands and
the cheesy magic poses, Tyler says. Part
of the reason it works is because its two
best mates on stage whove worked so
hard creating the show to appeal to an
audience that wouldnt normally go to see
a regular magic show.
The Naked Magicians will perform at
the Model Performing Arts Center at
the Lyric in Baltimore on Thursday, April
21 and at the Lincoln Theatre in D.C., on
Sunday, April 24.
Expect to laugh more than you have
in any other comedy show. Expect to see
some of the most amazing magic ever.
Expect to be shocked in the best way
possible, Wayne says. When we were in

Hong Kong a journalist asked me, What

would you say to more conservative
theater goers? My answer, Stay at home.
Be aware, this isnt just a clever name for
a show; by the end the two are 100 percent
naked. However, its important to know
that the show isnt just two guys standing
there in the nude from start to nish.
We promise the show will be one of
the most incredible magic shows youll
ever see, we promise to deliver non-stop
laughs and we do promise well get naked
by the end of the show, Tyler says. The
audience can think of the show like a rst
Tinder date youll have a drink, have a
laugh, enjoy some magic and we promise
youll get a glimpse of our magic wands by
the end of the show. Lets hope its a not a
cold night in Washington.
The two met at one of Tylers magic
performances and though both were
fully clothed, they connected through
the common interest of magic and a
bromance developed.
We have become closer and closer since
then, to the point where we now feel 100
percent comfortable getting naked with
one other, Tyler says. Still just friends
though. Christopher is an incredibly
talented magician, very funny, and a top
bloke so designing the show together came
naturally. Now I have my dream job where
I get to entertain thousands of people each
night with my best mate by my side.
Rather than a show of classic grand
illusions or cheesy magic, the Naked
Magic Show is a high-energy party
atmosphere where two bu Aussie men
get naked while performing incredible
trickery and delivering non-stop laughs.
As we were both magicians before
ever deciding to get naked on stage, the
actual magic in the show is top-notch,
Tyler says. Its all themed around those
naughty topics that we normally only
discuss with close friends behind closed
doors after a few wines. We even have a
trick that literally happening in the hands
of every audience member. The show is
very interactive, but be assured were the
only ones who need to get naked.

Charlotte loves Jonny. And Claire.

Todays roomier rides
trendier than predecessors
By JOE PHILLIPS
Station wagons, minivans and SUVs
have become as fashionable as bell
bottoms and padded shoulders. But
when it comes to todays haulers, these
trendy crossovers are like skinny jeans:
They can really show o your sass.
FORD EDGE
$29,000
Mpg: 20 city/30 highway
0-to-60 mph: 8.3 seconds
Maximum cargo space: 73.4 cu. ft.
When the midsize Edge rst appeared 10
years ago, it seemed like a gloried station
wagon. But Ford sprinkled lots of pixie dust
to create a zippy redo. This includes wraparound headlights, a Lexus-like rear and
sporty dual-exhaust tips. A bit of engineering
magic makes for superb steering and the
impressive, high-quality cabin has lots of
soft-touch surfaces (though the center
console is still clunky hard plastic.)
Keyless entry/ignition and a nifty noisereducing windshield are standard. And
while the base engine is solid, a lively
V6 on the Sport version is especially
quick. Optional safety gear: blind-spot
monitoring, rear cross-trac alert and
lane-departure
warning/prevention.
A forward-collision system adds more
braking if it detects an imminent collision,
and Fords MyKey system helps set
electronic parameters such as speed
and volume control for teens or valets.
INFINITI QX50
$36,000
Mpg: 17 city/24 highway
0-to-60 mph: 6.8 seconds
Maximum cargo space: 47.4 cu. ft.
While Ford was giving its Edge a lot
more edge, Inniti was upgrading its
compact QX50 to compete with a slew of
new luxe crossovers. The result is a longer

wheelbase with more rear legroom and a

smoother ride. Styling is still sexy, but the
grille, bumpers and taillights are sleeker.
Also new: a Premium Plus package, with
front/rear parking sensors, touchscreen
nav system, voice controls, Bluetooth
streaming audio and 360-degree birdseye camera. The thick steering wheel,
deft handling and grippy brakes make
this a fun ride, even in stop-and-go trac.
On dry roads, theres little dierence
between the rear- and all-wheel-drive
models (fuel eciency, which isnt stellar,
is also the same for both versions.) The
tony cabin is very user-friendly, with the
latest safety and infotainment features,
though the seven-inch screen is tiny
compared with most competitors. Two
must-have options: power-folding rear
seats and a built-in coat hanger on the
back of the drivers seat.

Trans trial tale told from

shrinks perspective

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER has been reading

since she was 3 years old.She lives in Wisconsin
with two dogs and 12,000 books. Reach her at
bookwormsez@yahoo.com.

You could become whatever you want

to be.
A ballerina, a cowboy, a reman, a
teacher. The sky was the limit or so
you were told. You could grow up and
become the person of your dreams and
that was OK. Except sometimes, as in the
new book A Murder Over a Girl by Ken
Corbett, dreaming can be deadly.
Larry King had had a rough start in life.
Born to an addict who turned tricks
for drugs, Larry was neglected and
abused and became a ward of the state
as a small toddler; at age 2-and-a-half,
the little brown boy was adopted by a
white couple and life was better until
he reached adolescence. At age 15, he
began talking about wearing make-up
and womens clothing and becoming the
girl he felt he was.
Many of his teachers directed Larry
to the closet; the supportive ones were
criticized. His adoptive parents tried to
downplay his wishes. Eventually, Larry left
their house and moved into a group home
where he felt comfortable enough to start
transitioning. He asked his teachers to call
him Leticia and began wearing cosmetics
and feminine apparel to school.
To those who knew him, Brandon
McInerney was just a regular kid. Blond,
blue-eyed and athletic, he liked riding his
bike and hanging out with friends, though

there was a side of him that many knew

but few acknowledged. McInerney had
a quick temper and was fascinated with
Nazism and skinhead culture. Larry King,
therefore, was everything McInerney
hated especially when, as rumor had it,
King asked McInerney to be his Valentine.
Or, at least thats what other middleschoolers claimed, although no one could
actually recollect hearing it. And even
if his words were just rumor, some kids
still said that McInerney was bothered by
Kings amboyant actions, possibly to
the point of sputtering rage.
Friends advised McInerney to ignore King,
but he couldnt. And so, on Feb. 12, 2008,
not three weeks after his 14th birthday,
Brandon McInerney took a gun to school
and shot Larry King twice in the head.
I wish I could say that theres a
satisfying ending to this book, but theres
not. And its not author Ken Corbetts
fault, but reading A Murder Over a Girl
is somewhat like watching a horrible train
wreck that just keeps going.
But that doesnt diminish the
importance of this book. Corbett, a
clinical psychologist, oers readers a look
at a crime from a non-lawmakers point of
view. This perspective for what happened
enhances the understanding of the whole
picture, psychologically speaking and
especially in the books second section.
There, Corbett writes mostly about the
trial, witnesses and other research, all of
which seemed to allow him to dive more
personally into this story. Because he
presents it so well, the reader feels the
same involvement.
This is a timely book, a trial watchers
delight and a shocker all around. It has no
happy ending, but its impossible to look
away from.

Gay Night Vale relationship

evolved organically
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 33

earned a spot on the Washington Posts

top science ction and fantasy list in 2015.
A novel isnt the only spin-o the
podcast has created. Perhaps the greatest
result has been an eager and imaginative
fandom that has created everything from
elaborate character fan art to detailed fan
ction stories. The social blogging website
Tumblr has thousands of blogs dedicated
to the podcast featuring peoples own
interpretations of Night Vale. Baldwin
says hes amazed by the minds of the
fans to create their own works, but says
the nature of the show makes it easy to
create their own Night Vale worlds.
If it was a TV show, the actors playing
the characters, that is what those
characters would look like. People would
have come up with many fan drawings,
but because its a radio show and because
the style of Joseph and Jereys writing
is very broad, it does leave a lot to the
imagination. It really does free people up
because you can totally take ownership
over what they think these characters
look like, Baldwin says.
Because it allows people to do the
heavy lifting with the imagination, people
become more invested. We dont give
any easy answers but these people have
really sat down and thought about it and
daydreamed about what these characters
look like and how they interact. They
become that much invested.
A fan favorite to draw and write about
is the romantic relationship between Cecil
and Carlos the Scientist. Carlos comes
to Night Vale to examine the strange
happenings of the town. Along the way
Cecil and Carlos fall in love.
Having a same-sex relationship on the
show was never planned, but Baldwin
says it was a natural progression because
he is a gay actor and thats how he read
Cecils aection for Carlos in the script.
Early on Carlos the Scientist, his role
on the show was to be the outsider. He
was the guy from the outside world who
said, Oh my god your town is messed
up. But it was through my interpretation
of the script, I read a couple scenes
and I thought, Oh Cecil sounds really
interested in this guy, I wonder why. Oh
well obviously he has a crush on him,
Baldwin says.
So without saying that out loud, thats
just how I played the scene and Joseph
and Jerey kind of picked up on that.
And a year later we got to the First Date
episode which was kind of the beginning
of two characters in the middle of all
this craziness and the least weird thing
about them is the fact that theyre gay,
Baldwin says.

The town of Night Vale also has a diverse

group of of queer and trans characters.
The Sheris Secret Police, the mysterious
and creepy local law enforcement, also
have an ocial spokesbeing that uses
gender-neutral pronouns and delivers
announcements to the town.
Although not the primary goal, the
inclusion of queer and trans characters
has earned Welcome to Night Vale a
substantial LGBT fanbase. Queer Daily
Xtra writer Michael Lyons says he never
anticipated the show to go as far as it has
with including LGBT characters.
I started listening pretty early on,
so even though I heard plenty about
perfect Carlos from the beginning and
I as Im sure many others wished
Cecil and Carlos would end up together,
I never dreamed the show would go so
completely in that direction, Lyons says.
I think thats why the show resonates
with so many queer and trans people.
Cecil and Carlos relationship came about
so organically, but also so unexpectedly,
it felt really authentic and wonderful
to those of us who dont see ourselves
represented in most entertainment.
Gay Night Vale fan Aram Vartian also
thinks Cecil and Carloss relationship is
normal despite the strange world they
live in.
I think the relationship between Cecil
and Carlos helps to ground the utter
insanity of the town around them. It is
nice that in 2016 a same-sex relationship
is the one thing about a story that can be
considered normal, Vartian says.
Baldwin says there hasnt been much
backlash.
We just received a couple of emails
from people saying, I cant believe you
did this and we just said, Well believe it
and if you dont like it, dont listen to the
show; Baldwin says.
Including so many diverse characters
lets people relate to the show and is
something Baldwin thinks people use
to help them with their everyday lives,
despite how wacky Night Vale can get.
I know in a lot of ways it helps people
relate to the world they live in by thinking,
Oh my gosh, well if I lived in Night Vale
then thered be dragons everywhere and
giant sand chasms that lead to other
places in times. That sounds so horrible
but everyone in Night Vale handles it so
well I can surely handle 2016 elections,
Baldwin says.
