During the presentation the scholar explains why it is important to have a

meaningful understanding of the relation between discourse and knowledge and

also he explains how this two concepts relate to each other. He started the
presentation by giving a brief introduction where he mentions that three
dimensions of discourse are required to be analyzed in order to fully understand
its impact and why knowledge and discourse are related.
The dimensions he talked about are: Discourse structure, mental structure and
society.

The scholar says that when analyzing discourse we need to be

focused not just in the theoretical information about the discourse itself or in
mental structures but in society as well. I believe that this is because depending
on the context and on the environmental characteristics that people know and
recognize is how they are going to interact with others whether is verbally or by
written messages. Which means that the definitions that we have of the reality
and of the social structures will influence our speech.
According to the scholar, context is a subjective mental model of the
communicative situation. Personally I used to believe that the context was an
objective situation and that the participants of that situation will react the same
to it. Now based on the explanation of the scholar I can say that I was wrong,
people will react differently to certain communicative situations in which they are
interacting and this is because every single person has a different and individual
perspective about the reality they live in. Also the scholar mentioned three main
sources from which we get all kind of information about the world. The first one
is because most of what we know come to us through discourse. The second
one is experience and third are inferences. He called them the three sources of
knowledge. He also mentioned two major reasons for which discourse and
knowledge are related. Which are: Most of our knowledge comes through
discourse and inferences based on such knowledge. If people want to be able
to fully understand discourse and produce it as well, they must have great
amounts of knowledge.
In order to understand the massage thats been trying to be conveyed, the
discourse most be coherent, people should be able to interpret it. The scholar

states that people should be able to construct a mental model. This will be done
by using not only the implicit information but also by making inferences and
using all the knowledge that we already have and that was obtained through
own experience.
To be able to convey a message successfully can be seen, sometimes, as
something quite easy since all we have to do is use the mental lexicon that we
have learned thought our entire life. However this can be more just than that,
when trying to transmit a message either in a written or speaking form, we must
take into consideration the addressee, the context, our relationship with the
addressee and the knowledge that we have, in order to know how to approach
to others and to know the type of language one must use to actually have a
successful communication system. As the scholar explain discourse and
knowledge are concepts that go closely one with the other, because we cannot
have knowledge without discourse and discourse without knowledge.
