1.1 Selection Principles of GPS Feeder Cable

If the length is less than 100 m, adopt the 1/4" feeder cable (recommended).

If the length is less than 80 m, adopt the 9 cable (normally not recommended).

If the length is more than 100 m, adopt the 7/8" cable (recommended).

The following describes the structure and installation methods of the 1/4" feeder cable
and 9 cable respectively.

1.2 GPS Antenna Feeder System Structure


The GPS antenna feeder system is used to receive the navigation positioning signals of
the GPS satellite, demodulate the frequency and clock signals and supply it to relevant
units of the base station, as shown in Figure 1.2 -1. The GPS antenna feeder system
consists of the GPS antenna, GPS feeder cable, GPS lightning arrester, GPS feeder
connector, and feeder grounding kit, which are described in detail in the following.

Caution:
If the lightning arrester is not installed inside the BTS rack and an N type male-to-male
(M-M) adaptor is allotted on the site, install it according to Figure 1.2 -2.
If the lightning arrester is installed inside the BTS rack, directly joint the N type
connector on top with the N type 1/4" straight cable plug (pin).

1.2.1 GPS Antenna


The GPS antenna is an active antenna, mainly used to receive GPS satellite signals for
positioning and time service. The real product is as shown in Figure 1.2 -3.

1.2.2 GPS Feeder Cable


The GPS feeder cable is used to connect the GPS antenna and GPS receiver. It
transmits signals received by the GPS antenna to the GPS receiver for processing; and
simultaneously converts the 5V DC power supplied by the GPS receiver to the GPS
antenna as the working voltage.
The 1/4 feeder cable is as shown in Figure 1.2 -3.

The minimum bend radius of the 1/4 feeder cable in single bend is 38 mm, and that of
1/4 feeder cable in continuous bends ( 15 times) is 76 mm.

1.2.3 GPS Lightning Arrester


The GPS lightning arrester is used in to protect the base station equipment. It is
installed between the coaxial feeder cable connected with the GPS antenna and the
antenna feeder RF cable of the GPSTM board inside the base station to prevent the
damage of temporary overvoltage on the base station boards formed by lightning
induction.
For technical specifications of the GPS lightning arrester, refer to Table 1.2 -3.

1.2.4 GPS Feeder Cable Connector


The GPS feeder cable connector is an N type 1/4" straight cable plug (pin). It is a
middle/large-power connector with the screw thread connection structure, which is
featured by strong earthquake resistance, high reliability and excellent mechanical and
electrical performances. It is widely used to connect the RF coaxial cable in radio
equipments and instruments under the oscillation condition. The product can be mated
with international products of the same type. Its structure is as shown in Figure 1.2 -4.

1.2.5 Feeder Grounding Kit


The GPS feeder grounding kit adopts the 1/4" SureGround PlusTM grounding kit and
is applicable to outdoor lightning protection of the 1/4" feeder cable. The principal
structure of the product is as shown in Figure 1.2 -5:

Notes:
The inner diameter of the grounding kit main body is 9 mm-11 mm during operation;
It is made of black rubber cover stainless steel workpiece;
The surface of the insert is smooth.
Besides requirements of the drawings, technical requirements of the 1/4" SureGround
PlusTM grounding kit include:
1.

The 1/4" SureGround PlusTM grounding kit shall provide a good grounding for
the outdoor lightning protection of the 1/4" feeder cable;
The outer surface of parts such as the grounding kit main body shall be smooth
with no scratches. The interior surface shall have no sharp edges, burrs, or
bulges that affect the insulation of the cable;

The self-contained outer hexagon M6 bolts of the grounding kit main body is
designed with the anti-shedding ability. Its own copper braid shall be neat, with
no wire dropping. The bottom of the grounding kit main body shall be applied
with enough sealant (with the bulk of no less than 160 mm3) to satisfy the
requirements of sealing;

3.

The cable shall be weather-resistant, corrosion resistant and aging resistant. The
grounding resistance should be less than 1 ohm. The cable shall be lead-free and
meets the environmental protection requirements;

4.

The specific dimensions of all assembly parts and components shall meet the
design requirements of the suppliers own drawings. The form and position
tolerance and dimensions tolerance shall meet the technical requirements of the
drawings.

1.2.6 Structure of GPS Antenna Feeder System With 1/4" Feeder Cable
When the 1/4" feeder cable is adopted, use the GPS feeder grounding kit to achieve
single-point grounding. The grounding kit is normally installed within 1m in front of
the introduction position of the feeder cable into the equipment room, and is also
connected to the outdoor grounding bar. Though the GPS feeder cable is relatively
long, it only needs single-point grounding.

Note:
The GPS grounding kit ground wire allotted with the equipment is 0.8 m long. Make
sure that the ground wire can be connected to the outdoor grounding bar before
installing the grounding kit.
The structure of the GPS antenna feeder system with the 1/4" feeder cable is shown as
in Figure 1.2 -6.

1.2.7 Structure of GPS Antenna Feeder System with 9 Cable


The 9 cable cannot be grounded through the feeder clamp. Therefore, the N type
female-to-female (F-F) adapter and GPS ground wire grounding kit are normally
adopted together in grounding. The N type F-F adapter is normally installed on the
indoor cabling rack near the feeder window, and then connected to the outdoor
grounding kit through the GPS ground wire grounding kit for grounding.
The structure of the GPS antenna feeder system with the 9 cable is as shown in
Figure 1.2 -7.

1.3 Installation Position of GPS Antenna


The GPS antenna can be installed either on the tower or the top of the building.
1.

When it is mounted on the tower, the installation requirements are as shown in


Figure 1.3 -1.

1.4 Installation Specification of GPS Antenna Feeder System


1.

Installation requirements of the GPS antenna


The GPS antenna should be installed at the place which is broad in vision and
has no obstacles within the elevation angle of 150 to ensure the GPS antenna
traces as many satellites (above 4) as possible and to reduce he feeder cable as
short as possible to decrease attenuation and lightning induction. If it is mounted
on the tower, the horizontal distance between the GPS pole and the tower is 30
cm. the GPS antenna shall not be mounted under the microwave antenna, hightension cable, or TV transmitting tower, and not be affected by the main lobe of
the mobile antenna. The GPS antenna shall be installed within the protective
range of 45 downtilt to the lightning rod top. To mount the GPS antenna on the
top of the building, you cannot mount it at the intersection of the buildings two
sides. If mounted on the tower or H-pole, the distance between the GPS antenna
and the tower or H-pole bottom shall be no more than 5 m. All nuts of the GPS
antenna shall be fastened and the spring washers shall be pressed and flattened.
Grounding requirements of the GPS antenna
If the base station is installed indoors, within 1 m in front of the introduction
position of the GPS feeder cable into the equipment room, connect the 1/4
feeder cable grounding kit with the outdoor copper ground bar near the feeder
window to make single point grounding. If the base station is installed outdoors,
the GPS feeder cable needs not be grounded.
Laying requirements of the GPS cable

The GPS single cable shall be bundled at each horizontal iron bar of the cabling
rack. The cable should be bundled evenly when wiring along the wall. The
maximum bundling space shall be no greater than 0.76 m. Both sides of the
cable bend should be bundled and fastened. If the GPS antenna is equipped with
the sheath, put the cable through the sheath. The sheath shall be wound with the
insulating tape.

2.1 Installation Process


When the 1/4" feeder cable is adopted, the installation process is as shown in Figure
2.1 -8.

2.1.1 Making N Type Connector of 1/4" Feeder Cable


To make the N type connector of the 1/4" feeder cable, prepare tools such as scale ruler
(in millimeter), electric knife, spanner, file, and brush. If special-purpose cutting tool is
equipped, the connector can be made more quickly and conveniently.
Caution:
The shielding corrugated copper tube of the 1/4 feeder cable is relatively thin and easy
to be damaged. During field installation, trampling on the 1/4 feeder cable and rough
handling of it are strictly prohibited.
The wire stripping requirements for making the N type connector of the 1/4" feeder
cable are as shown in Figure 2.1 -3.

14.5 mm and the maximum length is 15.5 mm.


Steps:
1.

Straighten one end of the feeder cable to be mounted with the connector for
about 50 mm. Use the electric knife to cut and strip the skin of the feeder cable
at 20 mm away from the end, as shown in Figure 2.1 -4.

Cut the outer conductor of the feeder cable at the wave by using the electric
knife. The cutting position is shown as in Figure 2.1 -5, which is 14.5 mm away
from the feeder cable skin cut-off position. Note that the cutting point shall be at
the wave. If the two requirements cannot be satisfied, repeat the measurement
and re-cut the feeder cable skin until the two requirements are satisfied.

Cut the outer conductor as shown in Figure 2.1 -6.

3.

After cutting, file the inner conductor lightly by using a file to satisfy the
requirement of 0.345. That is, file the head smooth and the rim of the head
into inclined plane, which is 45 with the inner conductor. The length of the
inner conductor corresponding to the slope is about 0.3 mm, as shown in Figure
2.1 -7. No burr is allowed in the inner conductor after the treatment; otherwise,
it may affect the quality of received GPS signals.

After the treatment in step 4 and 5, the dimensions of the 1/4" feeder cable are as
shown in Figure 2.1 -8.

4.

Brush away the debris on the 1/4" feeder cable, and apply the lubricant on the
outer conductor surface. Then put the O-shape seal ring on the fourth wave
trough on the outer conductor, as shown in Figure 1.4-8.

5.

Separate the front and rear parts of the feeder cable connector and insert the
feeder cable into the rear feeder cable connector until it contacts the first ripple
of the feeder cable. Revolve left and right to expand the outer conductor of the
feeder cable. Press it against the rear part of the feeder cable connector, which is
clamped in the first wave trough of the outer conductor finally, as shown in
Figure 2.1 -10.

5.

Screw up the front feed head to the rear part. After it is in place, wrench the
front feed head. Keep the rear feed head and feeder cable unmoved and then
wrench the front feed head. Apply the recommended moment of force of 7-10
Nm until it is tight. The process is as shown in Figure 2.1 -11.

2.1.2 Installing GPS 1/4" Feeder Grounding Kit


The structure of the GPS 1/4" feeder grounding kit is as shown in Figure 2.1 -12.

The GPS 1/4" feeder grounding kit is easy to be installed and is contained with
waterproof clay. There is no need of waterproofing treatment.
Materials delivered to the installation field include:

Grounding kit main body (contained with tinned copper braid , two M625
outer hexagon bolts (contained with spring washers and flat washers)

Assembled 0.8 m ground wire

one M825 outer hexagon screw (contained with spring washer and flat washer)

a small packet of copper oil (10 ml)

Among them, the M825 brass screw is used to connect the ground wire and grounding
bar.
In some special occasions, the following materials need to be prepared if the ground
wire should be made on the site:
Black 10 mm2 copper cored ground wire;
Grounding terminal (at the grounding kit side), grounding terminal (at the grounding
bar side)
Thermoplastic sleeve (black)
The structure of the ground wire is as shown in Figure 2.1 -13.

To make the ground wire by oneself, follow the steps as below.


1.

Strip the 13 mm-long skin at both ends of the copper core cable, and sheathe two
12 heatshrink tubes with the copper core cable;

2.

Press two terminals on both sides of the copper core cable with the hydraulic
pliers and use the hair dryer to blow the heatshrink tube until it shrinks on the
surface of the copper core cable and the terminal.

Note:
Shear both ends of the heatshrink tube evenly and make them closely contact the
grounding terminals and ground wire. If the heatshrink tube is broken, re-made it.
Installation steps of the grounding kit:
1.

Determine the position of the 1/4" feeder grounding kit, and cut the skin of the
1/4" feeder cable according to the size of the grounding kit (about 25 mm).
Sleeve the grounding kit at the stripped position of the 1/4" feeder cable.

2.

Fasten the terminals (two connecting jack) on the grounding kit with M6 outer

hexagon bolts, and then tighten the bolts to close up the grounding kit and fix it
at the cable connection position. Note that the spring washers and flat washers
contained with the M6 outer hexagon bolts shall be mounted between the bolt
head and grounding terminal as originally.
3.

Fasten the grounding terminal of the other side to the grounding bar with M8
brass screws. Mount that flat washers and spring washers in sequence.

4.

Apply a layer of copper oil on the exposed metal surface to make preservative
treatment.

3.1 Installation Steps


To adopt the 9 cable, follow the installation steps of the GPS antenna feeder system
as below.
1.

Make the outdoor connector of the coaxial cable according to the methods
introduced in Section 3.1.1 Making Connector of GPS Coaxial Cable.

2.

Put the connector through the GPS sheath and lay the coaxial cable from the
GPS antenna to indoors.

3.

Wrench the outdoor connector of the coaxial cable to the GPS antenna
connector.

4.

Keep the GPS antenna unmoved and wrench the sheath to the GPS antenna.

5.

Fasten the sheath to the pole with the GPS antenna hoop.

6.

Cut around the coaxial cable at the distance of 1m away from the feeder window
indoors to make indoor cable connectors and indoor jumper connectors. To lead
the coaxial cable into the equipment room, make sure that the rain will not be
introduced into the equipment room. If necessary, make the drain pipe.

7.

Connect the GPS ground wire grounding kit to the N type F-F adapter indoors
and fasten it with bolts. The other end of the GPS ground wire is led through the
feeder window and connected to the outdoor grounding copper bar.

8.

Connect the GPS feeder cable with the N type F-F adapter.

9.

Measure the distance between the cabinet and N type F-F adapter and estimate
the length of indoor GPS jumper. Make the indoor GPS jumper cable according

to the introduction in Section 3.1.1 Making Connector of GPS Coaxial Cable.


10. Connect indoor GPS jumper ends to the N type F-F adapter and the GPS antenna
feeder interface of CBTS I2 firmly respectively.

3.1.1 Making GPS Coaxial Cable Connector


When the feeder cable is less than 80 m, adopt the N-J9 type connector for the feeder
cable connected to the GPS receiver. The compatible feeder cable is the SYV-50-9 RF
coaxial cable.
The appearance of the N-J9 type connector is as shown in Figure 3.1 -14. The piece
parts are as shown in Figure 3.1 -15.

Peel the outer sheath.


As shown in Figure 3.1 -16, cut around the outer sheath by using the electric
knife at 10.50.25 mm away from the feeder cable cross section and strip the
outer sheath. Handle gently to avoid hurting the internal mesh-structure

2.

Mount the outer conductor.

As shown in Figure 3.1 -17, put the feeder cable through the end connecting
ring and equipped seal rings of N type connector from left to right.

Turn the inside of the shielding layer out evenly and cling it tightly to the metal
gasket, with the white insulating layer exposed, as shown in Figure 3.1 -18.

As shown in Figure 3.1 -19, mount the sliver plated outer conductor connecting
flange along the white insulating layer. The flange shall be inserted between the
copper braid shielding layer and white insulating layer. Push it tightly and press

the turnup shielding layer in the middle.

3.

Strip the insulating layer.


As shown in Figure 3.1 -20, cut around the white insulating layer with the
electric knife. Strip the insulating layer and expose the copper core. Do not hurt
the middle copper core during the operation. The cut surface of the insulating
layer shall be even and flat. The exposed size of the copper core is

After the insulating layer is removed, the cable is as shown in Figure 3.1 -21.

4.

Weld the inner conductor of contact pin.

Pull the copper core through the center hole of the little white insulation sheet.
Press the insulation sheet to the end against the cut surface of the insulation
layer, as shown in Figure 3.1 -22.

Dip the copper core with a thin layer of tin. There shall not be too much tin. If a
constant temperature solder iron is used, adjust the temperature of the soldering
bit to 350 and weld for 10 seconds. If a common solder iron is used, properly
increase the weld interval to fully melt the tin. Then insert the copper core into
the hole of the contact pin tail of the N type inner conductor. The end of the pin
shall be pushed against the insulation sheet. Heat externally and evenly with the
electric solder iron to complete welding, as shown in Figure 3.1 -23.

5.

Complete assembling.

Use the diagonal pliers to clean spare shielding layer, as shown in Figure 3.1
-24.

Screw up the casing and tail connecting piece with the spanner, as shown in
Figure 3.1 -26. It is suggested to lay the thin cotton cloth under the spanner to
protect the external surface of the connector. The tightening torque shall be
within 0.98 and 1.2 Nm.

After the assembly, the pin head of the inner conductor shall be parallel and
level to the front end of the outer conductor.

Check the assembly.

Upon visual inspection, the pin head of the inner conductor shall be parallel and
level to the outer conductor.

Test the assembly strength of the connector. Use the force moment meter to test
if the pull-out force is above 60 N. When there is no force moment meter, use
hands to test if it cannot be pulled out easily.

Test the resistance between the inner conductor and outer conductor with a
multimeter and the value shall be infinite.

Test the pin inner conductors on both sides of the feeder cable with a multimeter
and they shall be in conducting state.

Test the pin outer conductors on both sides of the feeder cable with a multimeter
and they shall be in conducting state.

Caution:
When the connector is used outdoors, adopt waterproofing measures such as winding

up the waterproof tape.


If the connector is wrenched repeatedly or affected by the wind, the copper wire
connection strength of the outer shielding layer will reduced. The feeder cable shall be
bundled rationally to reduce the force directly applied to the ends of the connector.
