Looking through the Nepali history what we can see is there is always division of caste in
society. This division of caste system was done according to the occupation given to the people.
There is belief that caste system was stated by Jayasthi Malla in Nepal but if we study the history
of Nepal caste system was practiced much earlier.
However, caste system was not only practiced in Nepal. In the past there were many other
countries that practiced the caste system. But the unique feature of the caste system that was
practiced in South Asian countries was the caste system was based on occupation and there was
compulsion that the future generations according to their caste have to follow the same
occupation willingly or unwillingly. Till now we know that culturally, Nepal is fragmented
society vitiated by caste and ethnic division. The caste system in Nepal brought practiced like
untouchable and discrimination, which is still prevalent in rural area of Nepal. The extent of
untouchable in Nepal was in past when Brahmins and Chetris came in contact with Sudras, they
used to bathe.
Looking in our history we can always see that the people in power always reap the benefit of the
of caste system. They intentionally favored the caste system in order to let people create disunity
among them and to remain themselves in power. The same was done in the period of early Shah
Kings and the Rana rule. They didnt only focus in the caste system but they also made the
people isolated from other parts of the world, they didnt let people to gain any education and
knowledge. The years of this system really hindered the economic growth of the country. During
this period Adam Smith had already started to share the interest of wealth of nations. This shows
how the history of Nepal was dominated by the powerful rulers in favor of themselves and their
families rather than the people of the nation and the economic development of the nation.
Similarly, looking through political history of Nepal from the end of Rana rule in 1950, Nepal
from 1950s till now is struggling for democracy. In this democracy process there has always
been severity of exclusion and marginalization. Severity of exclusion and marginalization in the
state power structures had always cost a huge pay to Nepalese people. In terms of economics, the
country has lost decades of opportunities which can be taped from the diversified pool of talents,

their inputs and energy which is must required for every nation for progress and prosperity. And
in terms of politics this created lot of political instability in Nepal.

Thus, in post 1950 period of the history the rulers of Nepal basically gave favor to the caste
system for their own power and economic benefit by creating disunity among the people. I
believe that if in this period of the history had the rulers gave emphasis on development of the
nation through educating the people of the nation. The economy of the nation will certainly have
been better.
After, 1950s even there were many events in the political history of Nepal. The country had to
always struggle for democracy, the main problem that lies in this period is there were much more
conflict among political leaders and political parties. It can be said that they showed much self
centered behavior and focus on their own power for their own benefits rather than focusing on
serious topics like inclusion and equal opportunity to all the people of the country based on
diversity and ethnicity. This exclusion always became a political issue for Nepal which has lead
to various movements like Jana Andolan in 1990, Loktantra Andolan in 2006 in the country. Due
to these issues the country had period of political instability. This had adversely affected the
economy of Nepal a lot.
So, if political leaders and parties of Nepal can make a Nepal an inclusionary state where equal
opportunities are provided to all the people of the country based on ethnicity and diversity then
Nepal have been and will be much more ahead in the economic development of the nation. After
all, any nation will lead to economic progress if only there is political stability in the nation and
all the rights of its citizen are taken into consideration.
