In Remembrance

I never dreamed it would be me,

My name for all eternity,
Recorded here at this hallowed place,
Alas, my name, no more my face.

“In the line of duty,” I hear them say,

My family now the price will pay.
My folded flag stained with their tears,
We only had those few short years.

The badge no longer on my chest,

I sleep now in eternal rest.
My sword I pass to those behind,
And pray they keep this thought in mind.

I never dreamed it would be me,

And with heavy heart and bended knee,
I ask for all here from the past,
Dear God, let my name be the last.

Officer Jarod M. Dean
Boston Heights Police Department

Honored during the May 6, 2010, Ohio Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony
for having lost his life in the line of duty

Officer Jarod M. Dean of the Boston Heights

Police Department was making the roads safer
for the traveling public when he lost his life to a
reckless driver on Jan. 19, 2009.
Patroling State Route 8 on the midnight shift, Officer Dean came upon
accident debris in the roadway near the entrance to the Ohio Turnpike. He
pulled his marked cruiser into the left lane, activated his lights and alerted the
dispatcher that he was exiting his cruiser to clear the debris.

While he was in the roadway, a box truck entered the left lane to pass
another vehicle and struck Officer Dean. The driver pleaded guilty to reckless
operation in April 2009.

Officer Dean served in law enforcement for approximately two and a half
years, including six months with the Boston Heights Police Department.

He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Marie Dean; a brother, Officer John
Dean of the Hudson Police Department, and sister-in-law, Kathryn Dean;
a sister, Carey Ceculski, and brother-in-law, Tom Ceculski; another brother,
Dean Rivera; grandparents, Bill Kaplar and Dorothy Borders; nephews, Deville,
Donovan, Thomas and Nathan; a neice, Genevieve; aunts and uncles, Christine
and Ron Sharp and Lou and Jan Churak; and girlfriend, Nicole Meszaros. He
was preceded in death by grandparents, Florence Dean and Stanley and
Jennie Florencki.

He will be missed by these loved ones and many other family members,
friends and co-workers.
Historical Inductions

The names of these individuals who died in the line of duty have been added to the Ohio Fallen Officers’ Memorial
Wall. They recently were nominated for induction after their departments, through research, discovered that they had
made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities many years ago.

The Ohio Peace Officers’ memorial flag display

2007–2008 This illustration depicts the placement of flags in the Ohio Peace Officers’
Memorial Flag Display, located on the grounds of the Ohio Peace Officer
Training Academy. It serves as a tribute to the honor, service and eternal
sacrifice of Ohio’s fallen peace officers. Made possible by the Fraternal Order
2006–2007 of Police of Ohio Inc., it was dedicated May 16, 1991. A flag honoring each
of the past year’s fallen officers is placed at the front of the display and later
integrated into the field of flags.
