CH 11 The Mole Notes + Practice

• What is a mole?

a mole is a representative unit of measure

…some other representative units? (dozen, pair, ream, trio, quartet,

etc.)

1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 things (6.02 x 1023 = Avogadro’s number)

Imagine…

1 mole cars = _________cars 6.02 x 1023 pencils = _________pencils

1 mole cheeseburgers = _________cheeseburgers 6.02 x 1023 socks = _________socks

1 mole microwaves = _________microwaves 6.02 x 1023 CDs = _________CDs

• In science we talk about moles in terms of particles

1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 particles

Particles include: atoms (Au), molecules (H2O), formula units (NaCl), ions (H+)

• Demo: show students samples of 1 mole of several different compounds and

elements

What do you notice about 1 mole of the different substances?

How can they all have 6.02 x 1023 particles?

One mole is always 6.02 x 1023 particles, no matter the size of the particle.

Converting molesparticles (using the “bridge,” first as a class, then independently)

2.15 mol Au = __________ atoms 1.70 mol MgCl2 = __________ formula units

5.21 mol C2H6 = _________ molecules 0.237mol Ca3(PO4)2 = __________ formula units

Converting particlesmoles

9.82 x 1023 atoms Au = ________mol 3.01 x 1021 formula units MgCl2 =

________mol

1.26 x 1024 molecules C2H6 = ____mol 4.20 x 1025 formula units Ca3(PO4)2 = ____ mol

• Particles like atoms and molecules are small…how do we know when we have a mole
of them?

• Demo: How do candy companies know when they have the correct number of
candies to go in a bag? (use family-sized bags of candies like m&ms and skittles)

• It’s all about mass:

• Molar mass – the mass of one mole of a substance, units = g/mol

The key = the periodic table

6.02 x 1023 atoms Li = 1 mol Li = __________ g Li

6.02 x 1023 atoms K = 1 mol K = __________ g K

6.02 x 1023 atoms Au = 1 mol Au = __________ g Au

6.02 x 1023 atoms Pb = 1 mol Pb = __________ g Pb

Converting molesmass (g)

2.5 mol Li = __________ g Li 0.0215 mol K = __________ g K

4.13 mol Au = __________ g Au 6.2 x 10-3 mol Pb = __________ g Pb

Converting mass (g)moles

17.81 g Li = __________ mol Li 11.23 g K = __________ mol K

Converting massparticles

45.62 g Au = __________ atoms Au 51.02 g Cu = __________ atoms Cu

Converting particlesmass

1.32 x 1023 atoms Li = __________ g Li 7.85 x 1024 atoms K = __________ g K

Students will create a review problem similar to those completed in class. They may choose
a moleparticle, molemass or particlemass problem (or reverse), but must use different
elements than used in class. They must show how to solve the problem, and the correct
answer.
