THE BENEFIT AND DETRIMENTAL EFFECT OF INTERNET ON STUDENTS

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use

the standard system to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that
consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of
local to global scope, that are linked by a broad cable of electronic, wireless and optical
networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information
resources and services. The Internet allows greater flexibility in working hours and
location, especially with the spread of unmetered high-speed connections. The Internet
can be accessed almost anywhere by numerous means, including through mobile internet
devices. Mobile phones, datacards and cellular routers allow users to connect to the
Internet wireless. Within the limitations imposed by small screens and other limited
facilities of such pocket-sized devices, the services of the Internet, including email and
the web, may be available. Service providers may restrict the services offered and
mobile data charges may be significantly higher than other access methods. The Internet
allows computer users to remotely access other computers and information stores easily,
wherever they may be. They may do this with or without computer security. Many
people use the World Wide Web to access news, weather and sports reports, to plan and
book vacations and to find out more about their interests. People use chat, messaging
and email to make and stay in touch with friends worldwide, sometimes in the same way
as some previously had pen pals. The Internet has seen a growing number of web
dekstop, where users can access their files and settings via the Internet. Social
networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace have created new ways to
socialize and interact. Users of these sites are able to add a wide variety of information
to pages, to pursue common interests, and to connect with others. It is also possible to
find existing friends, to allow communication among existing groups of people.

The Internet provides an opportunity for individuals to interact with friends and
family members, to research any topic they can imagine, and to explore the world while
sitting in the comfort of their own home. They do not have to go far away to communicate
with their friends. Internet usage decreases the amount of social interaction individuals have
with the world outside of their computer and may be accompanied by social anxiety,
loneliness, lowered self-esteem, or chronic depression, and the psychological literatures
mixed findings on these topics have not helped clarify the issue. This study looked at the
impact that Internet usage has on an individuals psychological well-being in an effort of the
student. Most of student that spent time on the Internet was not predict of depression, social
anxiety, or social engagement in face-to-face relationships or online relationships. The type
of activity engaged in online was also not predictive of depression, social anxiety, or social
engagement in face-to-face relationships. With only a click of the mouse, the Internet allows
individuals to learn information about almost any topic they care to research, and to
communicate.

Consumers take time to learn how to use any new technology, so the way people

are using the Internet changes overtime. New consumers are continually discovering the
Internet, so the mix of skills using by the people and demands among users is changing.
Also, in order for the Internet to become useful to ordinary consumers, complementary
innovations had to take place, such as in the area of business models. This innovation
has been occurring at a great pace, so that now there are many businesses designed to
sell products, services, or information that people want to buy or access online.
There are some of the benefit using the internet among the student. First, student
can use internet to communicate with their friends. They do not have to spend to much
money to communicate with their friends. Besides that internet also help student to
develop their computer skills. . It can also help students with their writing skills. In
some forms, the Internet can help students with critical thinking skills. Students are
faced with more information than they could ever use or need. This requires them to sort
through the information and decide what is most important and relevant. With e-mail,
students can have contact with other students around the world studying the same things
they are. The Internet can be a huge source for student trying to look up information for
a college project or do homework. It also eliminates barriers for handicapped students
who may have trouble getting to a library. It allows all students to access information
with just one click. The Internet allows students to read the latest news of a certain
subject they are studying. If they are studying Indian politics they can do a news search
and find out what is happening in the world of politics at that very moment. This can
help them connect what they are learning to the real world. It can also keep them
interested in a subject. Students may have longer attention spans with technology than

with other forms of traditional learning.

Students will have to use the computer for research in college, in their jobs and their
everyday lives. The Internet is a way of life for almost everyone now. Using it in a
classroom is one of the best and safest ways to help them learn about this tool. The
Internet is an added bonus for teachers looking for more information on subjects for
giving lectures. It allows them to efficiently communicate with teachers through email.
The Internet is a powerful tool for assisting students and educators with conducting
research. Going to a library and searching through a card catalog by hand can be
laborious and inefficient compared to searching for the same information on a computer.
Many college offer online library systems like Open University which allow students to
find information on books using lab computers, or to access databases of scholarly
articles that they can read online.
There is so much that students can do with the Internet. Not only can they
communicate with international students, they can gain from others' knowledge and
experiences, participate in chat rooms, share ideas and solutions and learn about the
many diverse cultures out there. By using the internet student can exchange opinion
from their friends easily. They do not have to go to their friends place to discuss about
their work. So it will not cost to much. They can interact with only just one click. The
internet can be a huge source for student trying to look up for information. As we all
know as a student we did not have so much money. By using internet student can save
their money to something else like stationery and to buy book. Besides that, the benefit
of internet on student is they can know about current issue that happen all around world.

In the former life, people have to subscribe a media, such as newspaper, tabloid, and
magazine to get the most update information around the world. During the big advance of
technology, people are able to access knowledge and information freely and easily
through a media that called internet. Through the internet, people not only get the
information but they are also able to do their daily activities using such helpful thing.
Student did not have to buy newspaper to get to know about what happen all around
them. They can read news on the internet. Hence student can get information more easily
by using internet then before. Nowadays, Internet is not only a secondary need, for some
people internet becomes the main need of their daily life.
Students or teenagers now are able to browse the internet freely, whether in their home or
in the internet cafe. Students are fast learner. They can even master the internet literary
only by watching their friend or adult browsing the internet. Another advantage of
internet on students is it can give positive effect on physical development of student.
People may not see the impact of internet to the physical development. However, internet
usages give a positive impact to the physical development. According to the knowledge
of muscular development and motor control skill, the use of internet that demands the
keyboard and mouse usage will naturally enhance the childs eye-hand coordination and
motor skill. So it will encourages self development among students. Besides it also give
positive effect cognitive development.
Students who use the Internet show gains in cognitive abilities such as memory, logical
problem solving, critical thinking, concentration, abstraction and comprehension. The
Internet exposes students to information to improve the quality of learning that they can
transform into knowledge. Through the use of the Internet, studentss language and
literacy development is often promoted, allowing for greater gains in verbal and
nonverbal skills. Indirectly student can enrich their vocabulary. In addition internet also
can give positive impact on social development. Internet cannot and should not replace
human interaction or relationships, nor take the place of activities such as sharing verbal
conversations with our children or reading together. However, internet allows children to
socialize with other children through the use of email, chat rooms, and instant messaging,
increasing the development of communication and social skills.

The Internet has provided much positive impact on people throughout the world for the
last ten years. It can be informative, convenient, resourceful and fun. However, the
Internet can also offer harmful influence on human such as pornography, security and
privacy. There is another significant issue involved peoples life. These days, there are
many people spending too much time on the Internet while they may not realize
themselves whether or not it is too much. Therefore, this can give a bad effect to the
students. Suler (1999) points out that Addictions to the internet are not actually defined
very clearly. This is because it can be unhealthy or even healthy and also a combination
of both. It is clear that when people are satisfied by some activities such as hobbies, they
would like to spend their times on these activities as much as possible. Some of internet
users cant control themselves when they should use the internet and when they do not
have to use. Another negative effect of internet on students is they can be the victim of
online games. Students usually like to imitate what they see, so the Internet as medium
can bring about violence to students as same as movies and television programs. It can be
seen that Internet games can be a cause of violence because these games could invite
players to engage with the action, disengage the critical faculties and take pleasure in the
substitute experiences of gratuitous violence. According to Olivier (2000), Internet games
send the following false messages to the players. The computer industry becomes more
sophisticated in its productions. It can do the games more realistic version of events.
Students will potentially copy what they play in the online game into their life.
For example, Counter Strikes, for instead, is embedded in violence. The challenge of
the game is for players to identify with a screen character and to fight and win another in
the exercise of violent action. In the game, all the character is violent. We can see
internet also give detrimental effect on student. Internet can prevent students from doing
their homework or assigned task by their own. Thanks to internet, students can obtain the
information they need with a great ease by simply clicking the button. However, this
great accessibility to any kind of information can be abused. For instance, when students
are given an assignment, what many of them do is just go on the websites or the blogs
where the seemingly needed information is posted, and drag, copy and paste it without
looking the material thoroughly later. Some students even just download the material
8

which someone else has already done and submit it as if it were their work.

The next detrimental effect of internet on students is limit student

knowledge. With the growing use of internet for research purposes, there is now a
decline in the number of books used for research. Also the information available on the
internet is limited and mostly pertains to the developed nations, a result, the knowledge
obtained is limited. Besides that, it is also involve isolation. . Due to spending countless
hours on the internet, students now spend a very limited time with family and actual
friends. Therefore, there is a weakening of the family bond and also limited interaction
with actual people. As a result, the students may miss out on real life interaction with
different relatives results in distorted social skills & limited real life social network.
Students also exposed to negative term like pornography. In todays day and age it is
harder to keep a check on the websites, a child is visiting and therefore, a lot of children
are now being exposed to obscene, sexual material online such as pornography. Also
since the identity of an individual is concealed online, there are a number of sexual
predators online, who take advantage of children.
There are something that we can do to prevent detrimental effect of
internet among students. The first solution is to stop yourself. This is the most important
matter for any kind of problem. Greenfield (1999) affirms that after Internet user
problem decide to resolve the problem, they must have stable mind and always realize
that they will not turn to become addicted to the Internet for a second time. An example
of this is that if online internet users find themselves hooked on chat rooms, they must
exclude this attractive Internet activity by saying no and refrain from chat rooms
altogether. Family therapy can be necessary among addicts whose marriages and family
relationships are negatively impacted by Internet addiction (Schuman, 2000). The family
should be involved so as to cure the Internet addicts. It should concentrate on several
main areas. For example, family members should reduce blame on the addict for
behaviors; the members should listen to the addicts feeling and help him or her by
finding new hobbies or take a long vacation; and member should improve open
communication skills

In conclusion , The Internet offers many considerable and necessary

benefits. It makes peoples lives much easier and simpler. On the other hand, the
Internet makes human more complex as well. The bigger matter is that those benefits
become a serious problem when people cannot control themselves to log off the Internet.
This can certainly lead to neglect their health, jobs, friendship and other responsibilities
besides their family. This issue is caused by many reasons such as a lack of satisfaction,
the appealing of the Internet and mental problems of people. Even though there are many
ways to solve this problem and cure these Internet detrimental, the most important
solution is they have to control themselves a. It is recommended that online users should
remember that preventing the problem is better and easier than solving the problem.
