Position: Public Affairs VAN Intern


Supervisor: Liz Owens, Community Engagement Coordinator
Time Commitment: 8-20 hrs/week, depending on schedule
Time Frame: Summer 2016, Fall 2016 will consider extended internships.
Compensation: Unpaid. We aim to provide opportunities for growth and development for our interns
including attending training opportunities and social events. We are willing to work with institutions in
order for credit hour compensation.
Position Overview: Thousands of Democratic campaigns, progressive organizations, labor unions and
nonprofits use the Voter Activation Network or VAN as a tool to manage their contact and civic
engagement programs. The Public Affairs VAN intern will assist in the building and maintaining of the
VAN for voter files, volunteer management and electoral work.
If you are interested in pursuing volunteer or career opportunities in campaign and/or electoral work
becoming familiar with VAN will put you at an advantage. This position will also offer support to the
candidate in effectively communicating messages around reproductive health to support the mission
and advocacy work of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah and Planned Parenthood Action
Council of Utah.

To promote success in the position, Interns will receive training in a variety of areas, including:
advocacy & organizing; political messaging; community outreach; program evaluation; and on-going
professional development opportunities tailored to the Interns interests and goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assist in establishing, maintaining and expanding programmatic utility of VAN database for
maintaining voter files, volunteer management and electoral work.

Complete volunteer orientation


Complete VAN Training modules and webinars
Transition current volunteers into VAN volunteer management
Maintain volunteer database
Participate in program evaluations and feedback discussions
Data entry
Weekly supervision
Contribute to Intern responsibilities and work-plan
Scheduling and staffing information/advocacy tables on campus to recruit new supporters and
distribute reproductive health care information as needed

Attending any pertinent training at Planned Parenthood Association of Utah to learn how to
effectively communicate to different groups about reproductive health care and rights
Assisting staff with special projects on as-needed basis
Documenting completed hours & events on a weekly basis

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong written and verbal communication skills


Strong interpersonal skills
Commitment to confidentiality, honesty, and ethics
Computer experience MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media a plus
Ability to initiate and complete tasks in a timely manner
Experience working in collaboration with other individuals and community organizations helpful
Commitment to the mission/philosophy of Planned Parenthood
Knowledge of reproductive health, PPAU services and political issues around reproductive health
rights is a plus
Ability to work between 8 and 20 hours a week (flexible based on interns schedule)
