WHY HAS TANITA DEVELOPED THIS PRODUCT?

Tanita has a long history in pioneering body composition products. In 1991, Tanita
developed the first stand on BIA machine that measured body fat. Since then,
increased research into adipose tissue has shown to be more accurate on an individual
level than standard methods such as BMI and waist circumference.
More recently, visceral and trunk fat have been identified as a direct link to metabolic
syndrome and cardio vascular risk however large research programs have been
hindered due to the cost of MRI and CT scans. Waist circumference is used on the
assumption of large waist, high visceral fat however on a personal level; results can
change dramatically between subjects.
Tanita applied its R&D expertise to directly measure visceral fat quickly and at low
cost with the aim of allowing researchers to investigate further into the long term
impact of visceral fat on health.
WHAT DOES VISCAN MEASURE?

Visceral fat level on a scale of 1 59 (0.5 graduation)

Assesses visceral fat level using a 6-step bar-graph

display from standard to excessive
Trunk fat percentage: on a scale of 5.0 75.0%
(0.1% graduation
Assesses trunk fat percentage: using a 9- step
bar-graph display from low to high
Estimated waist circumference: 50 130 cm
(1 cm graduation)
WHAT IS VISCERAL FAT?
Visceral fat, also called intra-abdominal fat, it is the fat that surrounds the internal
organs. It is distinct from subcutaneous fat which lies just beneath the skin's surface
Visceral fat is more metabolically active than subcutaneous fat and releases a range of
factors into the circulation which contribute to the development of various diseases
Studies have shown that people with high visceral fat are more susceptible to heart
disease, stroke, diabetes and hypertension
High visceral fat is associated with the features comprising metabolic syndrome the
clustering of closely related medical conditions that increase the long-term risk of
developing diabetes and heart disease

WHAT IS TRUNK FAT?

Tanitas definition of trunk fat is the same as BC418 definition ie all fat within the
body area from the neck to the hip.
WHERE IS THE WAIST?
There are many different theories on where to place a tape measure when measuring
waist circumference however Tanitas abdominal circumference is taken from
alignment with the umbilicus.
HOW DOES VISCAN WORK?
A cleverly designed electrode belt utilizing 4 electrode pads, is placed on the bare
midriff of the subject. The skin on the abdomen area should be dampened with s wet
sponge before taking a measurement.
The belt then uses Tanita Dual Frequency BIA
technology to take the measurement and passes the
measurement data via infra red to the base unit in
just 30 seconds.
Measures waist circumference using 8 distance
sensors located in the base unit.
WHO CAN USE VISCAN?
Adults from the age of 18 years will receive measurement data together with a
assessment.
Children can use VISCAN however only their measurements can be taken. No
assessment will be shown. The measurements can be used as a useful reference tool.
If the adult has a waist circumference over 130cm, the main unit will not fit
comfortably over their abdomen. A unique 130cm Mode button can be pressed to
allow measurements to be taken with the main unit placed away from the subject.
As with all BIA products, people fitted with pacemakers or internal medical devices
are advised not to take measurements and pregnant women.
WHAT VALIDATION EXISTS?
There are 3 validation papers (attached) supporting the accuracy of VISCAN.
They were all carried out in Japan however Tanita is working with Dr Susan
Jebb and Prof Andrew Prentice on a major validation study at the Medical
Research Council in Cambridge.
This study looks at the accuracy of visceral fat in VISCAN against MRI in 120
subjects split equally:

Male / female
Healthy BMI, Overweight BMI and Obese BMI

Initial results are due at the end of 2008.

Other studies are currently on-going investigating visceral fat in obese post-puberty
children with Prof Kurt Widhelm at Vienna University Hospital.
Juan Pablo-Casas from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine will
receive VISCAN as part of a major Cardio Vascular study sponsored by the Wellcome
Trust.
Tanita is currently looking for researchers interested in further investigating Visceral
Fat and to incorporate VISCAN in to their studies.
At main medical events Tanita will offer a discount to researchers who agree to
incorporate VISCAN in medical studies. A small card with details is available for you
to distribute or pass on to your distributors.
WHAT METHODS CURRENTLY EXIST TO MEASURE VISCERAL FAT?
Waist measurements do not specifically measure visceral fat. Waist circumference
may increase due to more visceral fat or more of the less harmful subcutaneous fat
Visceral fat is only measured accurately by an imaging machine (MRI or CT) that can
see how much of the abdomen is made up of visceral fat. These are the gold standards
within the medical market however due to very high costs are not used at primary care
level or large scale research projects.
Both MRI and CT scans cannot be used on very obese subjects (they cant fit on the
table!). With Over 130cm mode on VISCAN, there are no restrictions. HQ to
confirm on how this feature works and exactly the maximum waist size that can be
taken.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM USING VISCAN?
The target medical markets for VISCAN are:
Obesity
Metabolic syndrome
Cardio vascular
Of course the Non MA version (in Europe) can be used only by researchers within
these target areas.
