MATH SECRETS REVIEW

Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.B.2: Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.C.3: Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd
or an even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an
equation as a sum of equal addends.

Objectives:

Students will be able to add two single digits numbers.

Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of math strategies.
Students will be able to determine if a number is odd or even based on the total.

Procedure:
1. I will begin this lesson by modeling the review worksheet. I will have students on the carpet
gather around me as I spin the spinner and get two numbers.
2. After getting the two digits, I will write them in the first column. The first column will have an
empty box with a comma in the middle for students to write the two numbers on the die. Model
this for students.
3. After the students write the numbers in the first column, they will then write the number
sentence in the second column. (For example, if I spun a 1 and a 6, I would write 1+6=7) and
model this for the students.
4. After the number sentence is written, the students will create a Base10 chart to show their work
with adding. (For example, if I spun the numbers 1 and 6, I would create one Base10 chart and
using two different colored pencils I would make 6 dots in one color and 1 dot in a second color.
Model this for students. After creating the Base10 chart, I will be able to identify if the number is
odd or even and I will record it underneath the Base10 chart.
5. After modeling two or three times what the students will be doing, I will ask students if they have
any questions and answer them.

I will send students back to their seats and pass out the worksheet as well as spinners.
Students will work on this independently until they have finished their worksheet.
Once they are done they can raise their hand and I will collect their work.
After collecting their work, students can take out a fiction book from their book bag to read.

Assessment:

Students will be assessed formally. I will look over their papers and see what answers
they have gotten and they will be graded on the answer they found after completing the number
sentence and if the Base10 chart is done correctly. I will also assess students informally by
walking around the room and seeing which students are finishing these quickly and which
students are having difficulty. The purpose of this lesson is to ensure the students understand
the adding they have been doing based on their math secrets packets.
