Whatisarectifier?ArectifierisanelectroniccircuitthatconvertsACvoltagetoDCvoltage.Itcanbe
implementedusingacapacitordiodecombination.Theuniquepropertyofdiodes,permittingthecurrenttoflow
inasingledirectionisutilizedinhere.Nowwhatisabridgerectifier?Bridgerectifierisafullwaverectifier
circuitusingthecombinationoffourdiodestoformabridge.Ithastheadvantagethatitconvertsboththehalf
cyclesofACinputintoDCoutput.

NOTE:Youcanusestepdowncentertappedtransformeraswellasordinarystepdowntransformer.Ifyou
chooseacentertappedtransformeritispossibletochangetheoutputDC.Byconnectingmiddlepointanda
terminalpointoftransformertorectifierorbyconnectingbothterminalpointsoftransformertotherectifier
voltagecanbechanged.

Workingofabridgerectifier
Duringthepositivehalfcycleofsecondaryvoltage,diodesD2andD3areforwardbiasedanddiodesD1
andD4arereversebiased.NowthecurrentflowsthroughD2>Load>D3
Duringthenegativehalfcycleofthesecondaryvoltage,diodesD1andD4areforwardbiasedand
rectifierdiodesD2andD3arereversebiased.NowthecurrentflowsthroughD4>Load>D1
Inboththecycles,loadcurrentflowsinthesamedirection.HencewegetapulsatingDCvoltageas
showninfig(2).

AdditionofacapacitorattheoutputconvertsthepulsatingDCvoltagetofixedDCvoltage.

Uptoatimeperiodoft=1sinputvoltageisincreasing,sothecapacitorchargesuptopeakvalueofthe
input.Aftert=1sinputstartstodecrease,thenthevoltageacrossthecapacitorreversebiasesthediodes
D2andD4andthereforeitwillnotconduct.Nowcapacitordischargesthroughtheload,thenvoltage
acrossthecapacitordecreases.
Whenthepeakvoltageexceedsthecapacitorvoltage,diodesD2orD4forwardbiasesandasaresult
capacitoragainchargestothepeakvalue.Thisprocesscontinues.HencewegetalmostsmoothDC
voltageasshowninfig(3).
