proposed pipelines with existing pipelines and cables. The crossed lines are to be
protected by grout mattresses installed by divers.
1.2

Responsibilities

The Survey department is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of

these procedures.
The Lead Installation Engineer is responsible for checking that this document
complies with the requirements for this project.
The Project Manager is responsible for approving this document.

Real-time differential GPS makes it possible to correct the readings of GPS receivers
operating in a given area with values corresponding to the errors actually observed at
a reference station.
The system is provided with the latest Thales QC and multi-reference software
package MultiFix3. The SkyFix/MultiFix3 system is interfaced to both the DP
systems of the DSV and to the survey navigation computer.
4.2

Sub-surface Positioning

An Ultra Short Base Line (USBL) Kongsberg Simrad HiPAP will be used to provide
sub-sea positioning. This system is permanently installed on the vessel. The
transponder may be hand-held by a diver.

Gyrocompass

The heading of the vessel will be provided by a SG Brown gyrocompass, which will
be interfaced to the navigation system.
4.4

Navigation and Data Acquisition System

The proposed integrated navigation package Eiva Navipac will be interfaced to the
surface positioning equipment, the gyrocompass and to the USBL acoustic surface
unit to provide real time position of the vessel.
This system is based on a Pentium II computer, a data storage unit with hard disk and
3.5 floppy disk , a printer, and a colour monitor for the helmsmans display (with full
back up).
All navigation data are stored on disk (HD and CD-ROM) for post processing
purposes if required.
The following will be displayed graphically:
the theoretical pipeline route;
positions of relevant existing structures: pipelines, cables and seabed
obstructions, etc.
The following items will be displayed numerically:
the actual position and heading of the vessel;
the Distance Off Line of the vessel reference point relative to the
proposed pipeline route;
the Distance Along Line of the vessel reference point relative to the
proposed pipeline route;
positions of all offsets (i.e. bell location).
The positioning information and graphical display from the integrated navigation
system will be displayed on remote screens (i.e. for helmsman) as required.
4.5

CTDS Sensor

A CTDS Valeport Series 600 (conductivity/temperature/depth/salinity) meter will be

used to measure the necessary parameters in order to compute the velocity of sound
profile through the seawater column (using the Medwin or Wilson formula).
The sound velocity results are entered into the HiPAP USBL surface unit.

MOBILISATION AND CALIBRATIONS

Any calibrations performed prior to the Project will be sent to Customer before the
commencement of operations.
The DSV will have already been mobilised for another Project.
The following operations may be performed:
project briefing;
measurement check of all horizontal and vertical offsets;
gyrocompass calibration;
DGPS verification;
USBL calibration;
check operation of CTDS sensor;
input of the work parameters into the navigation package (geodetic
parameters);
input of the database information into the navigation package (existing
pipeline and cable positions);
input of the proposed pipeline routes;
complete mobilisation check list and documentation.
5.1

DGPS Verification

One of the following methods will be used to verify the DGPS positioning system:
a total station set up on and referenced to co-ordinated points on the
shore will be used to observe the range and bearing to a reflector mounted onto
the GPS antenna on the vessel. The reflector position will be calculated and this
will be compared to the antenna position observed at the vessel. The shore and
vessel parties will ensure that they are using the same geodetic and projection
parameters;
the vessel will perform transit fixes around a platform (see Section 2.7
for positions of platforms near the work areas). The derived platform position
will be compared to the known position. The calibration method is outlined in
OG-AA-K-2902.

Gyrocompass Calibration

The calibration of the gyrocompass will be performed by one of the following

methods:
by total station observation from a co-ordinated point on the shore to
reflectors mounted on the vessel;
azimuth survey using theodolite observation from the vessel to known
and co-ordinated onshore or offshore positions (existing platforms or flares);
determination of the vessel heading based on two DGPS/RTK antennae
located on points along the vessel lubber line;
transit or sextant observations to a co-ordinated structure whilst the
vessel is en-route to the work area;
by taped offsets from a quay of known azimuth to the vessels lubber
line.
See Section 2.7 for positions of platforms near the work areas.
In all of the above methods, the calculated heading will be compared to the observed
gyrocompass reading and any error applied as a correction in the navigation software.
5.3

USBL Calibration

A calibration will be performed as outlined in OG-AA-K-2902.

5.4

Velocity of Sound in Seawater

On arrival on site and prior to starting the operations, a sound velocity profile will be
observed with the CTDS probe. Medwin's or Wilson's formula will be used to
determine the speed of sound for the USBL system. Velocity profiles will be observed
at the commencement of operations and again when the vessel re-locates to the next
crossing.

OPERATIONS
Refer to the Pre-crossing Installation Procedures for details of the proposed dive
operations and tasks. The following sections outline the requirements of the survey
personnel onboard the DSV.
6.1

Positioning

The vessel is a dynamically positioned Class II multi-purpose diving support vessel.

The proposed, diving location, will be selected by the dive superintendent in
conjunction with the master. Once selected, the surveyor will enter the required dive
location into the navigation system to provide a target for the DSVs bell offset during
movement on DP.
During grout bag installation, the divers laying the bags will initially be positioned on
the seabed (as requested by the dive superintendent) by USBL interrogation of handheld mini-transponders. The subsequent positioning at each site may be performed by
divers taped measurements from the initial bag installation.
6.2

As-built Survey

The purpose of this survey is to acquire data to determine the position and alignment
of the grout bags for use in the final as-built alignment sheets and report.
Upon completion of the installation at each crossing, the diver will take the hand-held
transponder to the extremities of the grout bag arrays to confirm their position and
orientation.

8.11 NITEL FOC

The cables are laid as a pair, each 12.8mm outside diameter. They are reported to be
laid side-by-side and buried at a depth of 1 metre below the seabed.
Following a meeting between Customer, Contractor and NITEL, a decision was taken
to use the NITEL-supplied cable positions on which to base the pipeline crossings and
therefore there is no requirement to positively locate the cables prior to intervention
work.
NITEL cable as-laid co-ordinates at first crossing of 24 (KP20.91)
