Crossroads Theatre Guild maintains active performance schedule

By Andy Duffy
Weekly Voice

REED CITY Since acquiring

a new home four years ago, Reed
Citys Crossroads Theatre Guild
has produced a steady steam
of plays. Next on the slate will
be Deathtrap, to be performed
April 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 7 p.m.
and April 24 and May 1 at 2 p.m.
at 249 W. Upton Ave. in Reed City.
The play will be performed,
of course, in the guilds new but
historic home.
When the guild formed 30
years ago, it had a home in Reed
Citys old Masonic Temple. Then
the building gave way to the
expansion of a Reed City business. The expansion was good
for Reed City, but disastrous for
the guild.
The group went a decade or
so without a home base. Props
were scattered around the
countryside in what members
hoped were temporary homes
while they looked for another
building. Members, as if they
were people without a country,
assisted with high school play
productions. They performed a
play at the Osceola County Fairgrounds. Still, they were unable
to find a new home. For a while,
it looked as if the guild was going to disband.
Hope for a resurrection came
when the dwindling membership of a Reed City church
decided it was unable to keep
maintaining their building.
Someone who attended the
church knew the guild members
were looking for a home. The
elders of the church met with
members of the group.
One of the main concerns of
the congregation, longtime guild
member Deb Lockwood said,
was that the members wanted
the guild to maintain the character of the building. It was hard
for them to let the building go,
she said.
And little wonder. The building is the oldest church building
remaining in Reed City. It was
build in the 1870s or 1880s Locker said. Although it was ravaged
by fire in the some point, parts
of the old structure remained.
After church members received assurances from guild
members that the building
would retain its character and
that it would be used for a number of community activities, the
building changed hands for $1.
Once the group had a home

Theatre Guild production.
again, it burst into activity.
Guild members made improvements to the buildings restrooms, built a stage and began
producing an array of plays.
Among them were You Cant
Take it With You, And Then
There Were None, The Red
Velvet Cake War, Rexs Exes,
Nunsense, Death Takes a
Holiday and Exit the Body.
The group also served in an advisory role for some youth productions and was involved with
the fundraising play Mystery at
the Reed City Library.
Now an eclectic mix of people
is working on a production of
Deathtrap.
Directing the play is Ron
Ingraham. The retired electronics engineer has a long history
working with community theater groups. He was in his first
play when he was 4. He has been
with Crossroads since its inception. And with his engineering
background, he has done a lot
more than direct the actors and
actresses on stage.
The play, of course, hardly
needs an introduction. The 1978
work from the pen of Ira Levin
features murders, intrigue and
comic relief. In the play, the play
of a young playwright comes to
the attention of a writer whose
well has run dry. The experienced playwright conspires to
steal the young writers play.
After the smoke clears, three
people are dead and a psychic
has her hands on a purloined
script.

So successful was the Broadway production that it saw 1,800

performances during a four-year
run. And, of course, it became
popular with community theatres, high schools and universities. Cast member Morgan
Levere, who spent years in New
York acting, directing and composing and who plays Clifford
Anderson in the Crossroads production, said the play is a classic
murder drama.
Joining Levere onstage in the
play a play requiring a mere
five performers, incidentally
is a small town brew of performers with disparate backgrounds.
People such as David Ball, for
example.
The male half of a husbandwife acting team will be playing
the part of Sidney Bruhl in the
upcoming production. It will be
his fifth time onstage in a Crossroads production.
David became part of the
Crossroads group about four or
five years ago after current guild
vice president Timothy Locker
approached him and suggested
he should try acting. Ball first
appeared in You Cant Take it
With You. His low-key, relaxed
approach to acting made him an
instant hit with the audience.
Joining Ball onstage is his
wife, Nedra. She will be Myra
Bruhl. Her appearance will
mark Nedras first acting performance.
Nedra helped David rehearse
his lines for other Crossroads
productions. When tryouts came

around for Deathtrap, David suggested Nedra read for the role
of Myra Bruhl. She did and won
the part.
Also in the play is Michael
Michaud. He is Porter Milgrim,
Sidney Bruhls lawyer.
He grew up in Lansing. He
worked for the Red Cross in
Washington, D.C., and Ludington for 27 years before retiring.
He has been involved in theatrical productions for years.
I went to a few plays, worked
backstage and suddenly found
myself onstage, he said. He
likes Deathtrap because of its
intrigue.
Resi Westgate rounds out the
cast. She will be psychic Helga
ten Dorp,
Westgate is from Florida. She
has been living in Michigan for
six years now. She was involved
with high school productions.
Later, she began doing some
improvisation work with the
Screen Actors Guild and spent
some time doing independent
films with Closed Space Productions.
Resi is a person with bi-polar
disorder. She lives her life, she
said, with a anxiety, mania and
depression and the only time
she can rid herself form those
is when she is onstage. For her,
acting is a magnificent cure-all,
because it allows me to be somebody else for just a moment.
Acting is something I will never
give up.
Neither, apparently, will the
guild.

What WAS it?

If you (not your family,
not your guests during Dulcimerfest, you personally, all by yourself) are not
eating 23 dozen eggs each
year, well, sorry to say, you
simply are not doing your
fair share to support the
Michigan economy.
The folks who like to herald the impressive qualities
of the Great Lakes States
family-owned egg producers, will tell you that those
non-corporate farming
operations generate each
year 23 dozen of the protein laden orbs for every
Michigander. Our mystery
item has everything to do
with eggs. Recipes (or dietary preferences) often require the cook to separate
the yolks from the whites
when the eggs are still raw.
Most of us know that once
youve broken your way
into that shell, the transparent whites known
as the albumen (which
indeed become pure white
upon frying), are slippery

to the point of creating a

significant challenge when
trying to prevent the yolk
from rupturing whilst one
endeavors to collect all the
white. This kitchen tool is
created to handle one egg
at a time, providing flawless separation.
By breaking the shell
and pouring all contents
into the cup portion (being
careful to keep the yolk intact), the centermost circle
ultimately retains that yolk
while the albumen, thanks
to a bit of help from gravity, slips through the drain
holes into your collection
bowl below. Youll see that
there is even a small hole
directly beneath where the
yolk comes to rest, permitting even the thin layers
clinging to it, to drip to the
bowl below.
