Scour Protection Project

Field Operations

1st Phase

2nd Phase

3rd Phase

1st Phase

Pre-Installation Survey

A survey line is run along the centre design

position of Monopile
The DTM (Digital Terrain Model) of Pre
survey is processed
According with weather conditions a grid is
defined for rock dump operations

2nd Phase

Rock Installation

Operations commence with rock installation rock

along the central line of the grid according with project
specs (~23m )
The vessel is relocated 5 m away form central line and
rock is installed along that second line
Rock installation continues every 5m spacing to cover
one half of the area specified
Subsequently, the second half is covered with the
same procedure and spaces between lines are filled in
to build up the scour protection
During operations, additional surveys are conducted
to verify the geometry of scour protection under
installation
Based on survey results, areas to be fill in are
programmed to reach the filter layer specs

Factors to take in count

for Scour Protection
Installation
Water Depth. Shallow Waters
affecting manoeuvrability of ROV
Diameter of rock (3 9) vs.
Vertical tolerance 0 to 0.4m (0 to
~16)
Subsea currents
Weather Conditions (Wind, Swell
and current)
Above factors and their combination
have influence on the Subsea Rock
Installation (SRI)

3rd Phase
Survey

Post Installation

As result of Post-Installation Survey, the difference

and profiles chart generated, allows to define if
installed rock fulfil the scour protection specs
Differential colour chart contours is generated by
depth difference between Post-survey profile and
minimum high required (model) for the scour
protection
The model is defined by the Pre-Installation Survey
depth results plus minimum high for the scour
protection

Vertical Datum

According with OIG, annex 9.1: The preferred vertical datum for
use offshore is Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT)
LAT Water Level Datum is based on the lowest predicted tide
expected to occur in a 19 year period calculated through the
harmonic analysis of data collected during a specific time
LAT Datum (CD) is completely distinct from the Geodetic Datum
(elipsoid) (WGS84 or DHHN92 Official Vertical Reference System in
Germany-)
To define the relationship between LAT Datum and Geodetic Datum
in a specific area its required to establish relationships between
different tidal stations referred to the Geodetic Datum
A method to have a proper vertical control is the Co-Tidal charts or
a RTK GPS correlated with a tide gauge at the specific site.
For purposes of this stage of the project, vertical control could be
correlated between survey results against LAT Data provided by
STOW

DTOW Depth = Pre-survey Depth

How Depths are

correlated?

DTOW provided LAT

bathymetric information for
each location.

Pre-Installations bathymetric
results are compared with
DTOW data.

Data from survey are not tide

corrected and a difference in
depth is observed.

Bathymetric data form Presurvey are shifted to match

with DTOW data

Taking as reference the shifted

data Pre & Post surveys are
