Chapter 7: Course Registration

7.1. Course Registration via the Gakuji Web System


Gakuji Web System can be accessed directly after logging into SFC-SFS.
Please visit the website below to find courses, timetables and registration numbers of
project courses, independent research and other courses not listed on the timetable.

For assistance on course registration, do not hesitate to visit the Academic Affairs Office
before the end of the course registration period.

7.2. Course Registration Schedule


Spring Semester: 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 10 - 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 14
Fall Semester : 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 29 - 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 1
(tentative schedule)

Those who do not complete course registration by the


designated deadline will be subject to compulsory withdrawal under article 161 of
the Graduate School regulations.

7.3. Course Registration Precautions


Students must register for all courses they wish to take during the designated period
using the Gakuji Web System (online course registration). Students who do not register
courses without any particular reasons, such as taking a leave of absence, they will be
considered students who do not intend to continue their study and expelled from the
school (Article 161). Students will not earn credits for unregistered courses even if they
pass the semester-end examination.
Courses offered by campuses other than SFC, and courses related to the
Teacher-Training Course, must be registered in the spring semester including those
offered only in the fall semester(excluding courses offered by the Graduate School of
Science and Technology (excluding Teacher-Training Course), KBS, SDM, and KMD).
Be aware that the class schedule is subject to change.
If students wish to take courses offered at Keio University SFC, Toshin Satellite and
other campuses on the same day, they must allow a gap of at least one class period to
travel between campuses.
When you have finished course registration, confirm that the Status field for all of your
courses reads (Registration Completed)and then print out the system page for
your own records. Alternatively, you can save the page as an HTML file or a web
archive.

7.4. Course Registration for the Masters Program


Students may consult their Academic Advisor to review grade reports of previous
semesters and seek their guidance to obtain a Program or Course Certificate.
Students must register for the Masters Thesis (two credits) program (does not apply to
students who choose the Non-Thesis Track) in the last semester. (Students who wish to
obtain a masters degree in two years should register it in the fourth semester of
attendance.).
If students wish to extend their enrollment period, they must submit the designated form
to the Registrar Section, Academic Affairs Office stating the semester they are planning

to complete their masters program.


Students must ensure that they select the appropriate category for courses they register.
Students can register for undergraduate course/s as Optional Subject/s (Jiyu Kamoku).

7.5. Course Registration for the Doctoral Program


Students enrolling in or after academic year 2007, are required to register for the
Independent Research Course () conducted by their Main Research Advisor. If
the Main Research Advisor of student is studying abroad or on sabbatical leave,
students must register for the Independent Research Course conducted by their
Co-Research Advisor. The Advanced Fieldwork A/B/C/D Course required for the GESL
certificate are special courses ( ). Courses other than the Independent
Research Course and Advanced Fieldwork A/B/C/D can be registered as an Optional
Subjects (Jiyu Kamoku).

7.6. Project Course Registration


Students must consult their Academic Advisor of each program or project leader before
registering for Project Courses as each Project Course is conducted differently.
A date, time and place for the first meeting of each Project Course will be posted on the
Students Homepage for Keio University.
Masters Students:
Each Project Course offers two credits. Students are able to earn up to four credits from
Project Courses per semester.
In principle, there are two registration numbers assigned for each Project Course. If
students are planning to earn four credits from the same Project Course, they must
register both the numbers.
Additional Project Courses can be registered as an Optional Subjects (Jiyu Kamoku).

7.7. Registering for Courses Offered by Other Graduate Schools


of Keio University (Masters Students Only)
A maximum of ten credits earned from courses offered by other graduate schools of Keio
University may be transferred to the credits of the Graduate School of Media and
Governance if the Graduate School of Media and Governance Committee decides that
these courses are indeed relevant to research work of students.
If students wish to take courses offered by other graduate schools at Keio University,
students must obtain approval from the instructors in charge of the courses.
Students should ensure that the registration procedure before registering for courses
offered by other graduate schools. Some courses restrict the number of students who
belong to other graduate schools of Keio University.

If students are enrolled in their final semester, they are not allowed to register the
courses offered by KBS (Keio Business School).

7.8. Registration for e-Courses


The Graduate School offers some online courses which are eligible for credit. Videos of

classes are broadcast via the Internet. To take these courses, students must first obtain
permission from the faculty member in charge of the courses and then apply online.

7.9. Course Registration Confirmation


After courses are set (at the end of April for the spring semester and the middle of
October for the fall semester), you must compare the Course Registration Confirmation
screen on the Gakuji Web System with those from your own printout of web archive in
order to identify any discrepancies. If course registration has been completed correctly, a
Course Registration Confirmation Sheet will not be sent by regular mail. In the case that
these details do not completely match or if you have any other related queries, or if there
are any mistakes in your registration, bring a printout of the Course Registration Status
screen to the Registrar Section of the Academic Affairs Office during the course
registration amendment period. (Amendment cannot be carried out online.) Even if there
are mistakes in your registration, if you do not carry out the amendments, then the
details will be amended or deleted at the discretion of the Academic Advisor.

7.10. Amendment to Course Registration


During the course registration amendment period, students may:
Make changes in course category
Add or delete the Masters Thesis Course
Add or delete the Independent Research Course ()
Add or delete Project Courses
Delete Project Courses or change the course category to Optional Subject (Jiyu
Kamoku) if they have registered for more than two Project Courses
Delete undergraduate courses that are not eligible to register as Optional Subject
Students may ask their proxy to make registration amendments. Students must explain
changes they wish to make to their proxy so that he/she can perform the appropriate
changes. The Students proxy must present your own printout of the Course Registration
Confirmation screen or the Course Registration Confirmation Sheet (
) and a letter of authorization at the time of amendment. Students must take full
responsibility if their proxy makes any errors.
After this period, you must confirm your courses that you register on the Course
Registration Confirmation screen on the Gakuji Web System. The University will accept
no responsibility whatsoever for any disadvantage resulting from carelessness in the
checking registration details during this period. All details are deemed to have been
checked and confirmed as being correct after the course registration amendment period.

7.11. Graduate School Course Categories


Courses are grouped into the following categories to help students read and understand
the Course Registration Confirmation Sheet () and grade reports.
Masters students who wish to register for courses offered by other graduate schools at
Keio University as Optional Subjects (Jiyu Kamoku) must select Section B when they
register for courses through the Gakuji Web System.
The category can only be chosen during the course registration or amendment periods.
