TOTAL MARK:
PRACTICAL 7
OBJECTIVE:
1. To produce vegetation density map using Normalized Difference
Vegetation Indices (NDVI)
IN THIS PRACTICAL YOU WILL LEARN TO DO FOLLOWING:
Able to:
1. Calculate NDVI using Landsat image
2. Assess the vegetation density based using NDVI
3. Produce vegetation density map
STEP:
Part A: Calculating the NDVI using EASI Modeling in Focus
1. First, Open Focus program > From the File menu, click Open and choose
the image.
2. From the Layer menu, select Add Layer Wizard > select RGB > Next >
select 5> 4 > 3 and Click Finish.
3. In the Focus toolbar, click the Enhancements arrow and select Linear
4. From the Tools menu, select EASI Modeling. The EASI Modeling window
opens.
5. From the Input File, select image.pix
6. In the EASI Modeling dialog box, enter the following model:
NDVI = (NIR band RED band)
(NIR band + RED band)
Where;
Wavelength range
(m)
0.45-0.52
0.52-0.60
0.63-0.69
0.76-0.90
1.55-1.75
10.4-12.6
2.08-2.35
1. State the range of NDVI values for vegetated and non-vegetated areas
2. Based on the produced NDVI map, visually analyze the effect of each index
values ranged.
3. Based on vegetation index map, justify each of assigned classes.
4. Discuss the distribution of vegetation area and relate with development at
study area
