Lord,
Make me an instrument of Thy peace:
Where there is hatred;

Let me sow pardon.
Where there is discord;
Let me sow union.
Where there is doubt;
Let me sow faith.
Where there is despair;
Let me sow hope.
Where there is darkness;
Let me sow light.
Where there is sadness;
Let me sow joy.
For the sake of your mercy and truth, Amen.

And the time to be happy is now!


And the place to be happy is here!
And the way to be happy is to make someone happy!
And to have a little heaven down here!

Angelo Roncalli-an early Christian faithful- memorized a quantrain, that
became a motto for the rest of his life.

It was entitled;
Four future things:
Death, than which nothing is more certain;
Judgment, than which nothing is more strict;
Hell, than which nothing is more terrible;
Paradise, than which nothing is more delightful;

Can you imagine life without death?


Then you can imagine Heaven,
Where, life turns into one long day without a night.

STARTING PRAYER:

Holy Ghost;
We invoke Thee;
For moved by Thee;
The scriptures were written;
And moved by Thee;
We understand today. Amen.

INTRODUCTION:

From the outset,


Permit me to display some peculiar observations I have made in life
and of which I have come to treasure as a goldmine.

First and foremost;


“All human lives can be traced to labor pains.”
Secondly;
“Every new born life lets out a new cry at birth”

All these conditions have been accorded scientific explanations.

Yet, I still believe that;


We shall not fully comprehend the absolute meaning of these acts,
Until we also look at the other side of the coin.
In effect;
Though the parameters of my analysis on this account, cannot be
controlled into any meaningful scientific investigation,
It is my strong conviction that;
“All new lives perceive life as difficult.”

Honesty impels me to admit that;


“The meaning and purpose of life has generated more heat than
light to the human fraternity.”

This is wholesomely captured by Peter in, 1st Peter 1:24;


“..All flesh is as grass and all the glory of man as the flowers of
the grass. The grass withers, and its flowers fall away...”

Life is a challenge, life is difficult, and life is suffering.

The notable spiritual leader,


Budha conceded to this, when he termed his teaching of “life
as a suffering”, the first of the “four noble truths.”

Life is difficult;
This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths.
It is a great because;
Once we truly understand and accept the fact that life is
difficult, then;
Life is no longer difficult, because, once accepted;
The fact that life is difficult no longer matters.

Certainly, the difficulty of life stems from the fact that;


“Life is not automatically given to us with meaning.”
A man must fill his life with meaning; meaning is not automatically given to a
life.

It may be asked;
What value is there to a human life?
There is so much pain in this world;
What does it mean to suffer so much if our lives are nothing but the
blink of an eye?

Learn that;
“A blink of an eye in itself is nothing, but the eye that blinks,
that is something.”

A span of life is nothing, but the person who lives the span is something.

Why?
He or she can fill that tiny span with meaning;
So its quality is immeasurable though its quantity may be
insignificant.

That is the prime reason for my staging this pulpit today;


“To help you find a meaning for your life, while simultaneously
adding more meaning to my life.”

This is achieved through determination.

Ester Wahome sings it this way?

Ujapo u jangwani; Amini tu , neno lake;


Yeye anayo uwezo; Tena anazo nguvu-u-;

Usife moyo, miujiza u karibu-u-;


Ufuo wa bahari ndio ule, usife moyo.

Determination is the quality of being unwavering in our pursuit to achieve


a goal or a certain course of action, once we embark on it.
Probably, among Christ’s admonitions, determination did not miss out.
So to quote;
Mathew 24:13 where He comments;
“ But whosoever holds out to the end will be saved.”

When peace like a river, attendeth my way;
When sorrows like sea billows roll—
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say;

Though Satan should buffet; though trials should come;


Let this blest assurance control;
That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate;
And has shed His own blood for my soul:

My sin—O the joy of this glorious thought—


My sin not in part, but the whole;
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more;
Praise the Lord; Praise the Lord, O my soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight;


The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend;
“Even so”----It is well with my soul.

Permit me to narrate a parable;


That will give a piercing insight into my desired bottom-line, to those
who have ears that hear.

In the beginning, the pencil maker spoke to the pencil saying:


“There are seven things you need to know before I send you into
the world.
Always remember them and you will become the best pencil you
can ever be.”

FIRST:
You will be able to do many great things; but only if you allow yourself
to be held in someone’s hand.
SECOND:
You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but this is
required if you are to become a better pencil.

THIRD:
You have the ability to correct any mistakes you might make.

FOURTH:
I will offer you a companion called a rubber, who will erase any
evidence of a mistake you have corrected.

FIFTH:
The most important part of you will always be what is inside.

SIXTH:
No matter the condition, you must always continue to write.
You must always leave a clear, legible mark no matter how difficult the
situation.

SEVENTH:
You will finally wear out, but your work will be immortalized by your
writings on paper.

Replacing the pencil with yourself,


Always remember them, and you will become the best person you can
ever be.

FIRST:
You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow
yourself to be held in God’s hand;
And allow other human beings to access you for the many gifts
that you posses.

Plato-a legendary philosopher- once said that;


“The beginning of truth is to wonder at things.”
Properly wondered at;
Nature usually gives a meaning to a God as its master designer.

To me this is a fact;
And this fact will never cease to exist because some or all people
choose to ignore it.

It is imperative for each life to realize that;


“A person’s dreams expand once God begins to help us see how large and
how wide His plans for us are.”

If anything;
Solomon in Proverbs 1:7 says;

“7To have knowledge you must first have reverence for the Lord.”

And
John in John 3:27 says;

“A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from
heaven.”

Not to sideline Nicodemus who says in John 3:2 that;


“…we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can
do these signs unless God is with Him.”
Friends,
We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

Brothers and sisters;


We are here for some unique purpose, some noble objective;
That will allow us to manifest our highest human potential, while at the
same time, adding value to the lives around us.

Ask your neighbor;


“How many lives will you touch while you have the privilege to walk
this planet?”

Ask your neighbor:


“What legacy will you leave behind after you have taken your last
breadth?”

SONG: NEAR TO THE HEART OF GOD {495-SDA HYMNAL}—C.B. MCAFEE:


There is a place of quiet rest, Near to the heart of God;
A place where sin cannot molest, Near to the heart of God:

O Jesus, blest Redeemer, sent from the heart of God;


Hold us who wait before Thee; Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of comfort sweet; Near to the heart of God;


A place where we our savior meet, Near to the heart of God:

There is a place of full release; Near to the heart of God:


A place where all is joy and peace; Near to the heart of God:

SECONDLY:
“You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time by
going through various trials, but you will need it to become a stronger
person.”

Life is like an onion,


You peel it one layer at time and sometimes you weep.

Most people do not fully see this truth;


Instead, they moan more or less incessantly about the enormity of
their problems, as if life were generally easy or as if life should be easy.

Yes, life is a series of problems,


But do we want to moan about them or to solve them?

Without any fear of contradiction, let me categorically explain that;


“Problems are the cutting edge that distinguishes between success
and failure.”

Problems call forth our courage and wisdom, and when we desire growth;
We challenge the human capacity to solve problems.

Surely,
This is why teachers, lecturers and examiners give a set of problems
to the examined to solve and proceed to use this as a parameter to fix
their levels of competence.

Friends,
In the Biblical context, Solomon concedes to this in Ecclesiastes 7:3
where he observes that;
“Sorrow is better than laughter; it may sadden your face, but it
sharpens your understanding.”

James echoes the same in James 1:12 by saying;


“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been
approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has
promised to those who love Him.”

To learn great faith is to endure great trials;

Would you turn to your neighbor and tell him or her;


“The cross we bear precedes the crown we wear!”

SONG: THE OLD RUGGED CROSS {SDA 159}


On a hill far away, stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame,
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best,
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,


Has a wondrous attraction for me,
For the dear Lamb of God, left His glory above,
To bear it to dark Calvary.

To the old rugged cross, I will ever be true,


Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day, to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.

THIRD:
You will be able to correct mistakes you might make and grow
through them.

Theodore Roosevelt once observed that;


“The only man, who never makes a mistake, is the man who never
does anything at all.”

Success must never be final, failure must never be fatal.

We must always see;


“Any unit of time: as an opportunity to create a new
beginning to our crumbled lives.”

In the first epistle of (1st) John 1:8-10, he observes that;


“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and truth is
not in us;
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just; to forgive us our
sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness….”

And further he writes in 1st John 2:1-2 that;


“….I write to you that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we
have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous….”

Actually in all our mistakes, temptations and trials,


“God’s grace is sufficient.”
SONG: AMAZING GRACE: SDA HYMNAL NO. 108---JOHN NEWTON:
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound; That saved a wretch like me;
I once was lost, but now I’m found; Was blind but now I see.

‘Twas grace, that taught my heart to fear; And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did, that grace appear; The hour I first believed.

The Lord has promised good to me; His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be; As long as life endures.

Through many dangers toils and snares; I have already come;


‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far; And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years; Bright shining as the sun;
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise; Than when we’d first begun.

FOURTH:
God will always offer us a rubber called forgiveness, that will
absolve us, by erasing our failings of yesterday today.

One time a friend of mine sent me an SMS that read;


“Take courage, for God gives:
Sunshine for each rainfall;
A rainbow for each storm;
A sweet dream for each night;
A blessing for each trial;
And an answer to each prayer.

Through Christ’s death;


“Our sins were immersed into the deepest part of Christ’s blood,
leaving no sign of a fishing spot.”

But though God can forgive and forget, He can never forget you, only your
sins.

Jesus says in Mathew 26:28 that:


“For this is my blood of the new covenant: which is shed for many
for the remission of sins.”

Our forgiveness was bought at the price of Christ’s blood.


SONG: JESUS PAID IT ALL {SDA HYMNAL NO. 184}-MRS.ELVINA M. HALL
I hear the savior say; “Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray; Find in Me thine all in all.”

Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe;


Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.

Lord, now indeed I find; Thy power, and Thine alone;


Can change the leper’s spots; And melt the heart of stone.

Since nothing good have I; Whereby Thy grace to claim;


I’ll wash my garment white; In the blood of Calvary’s Lamb.

And when before the throne; I stand in Him complete;


I’ll lay my trophies down; All down at Jesus’ feet.

FIFTH:
The most important part of you will always be what is on the
inside.

In James 2:2-4 & 5 he writes:


“For if there should come into your assembly, a man with gold
rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in
filthy clothes;

And you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say
to him;
“You sit here in a good place,”
And say to the poor man,
“You stand there” or “Sit here at my foot-stool.”

Have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become


judges with evil thoughts.

Listen, my beloved brethren; has God not chosen the poor of this
world to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom which He
promised to those who love Him?”

Ladies and gentlemen;


We still: judge books by their covers;
Wolves by their skin color;
And people by their social status.
Jesus gives a stern warning in Mathew 23:25-26 when he says;
“25How terrible for you: teachers of the law and Pharisees! You
hypocrites!
You clean the outside of your cup and plate, while the inside is
full of what you have obtained by violence and selfishness.

“26Blind Pharisee! Clean what is inside the cup first, and then the
outside will be clean too!”

Friends,
The God who made the outside also made the inside; it is our
hearts, and not our bodies that is closest to God!

The LORD confirms this in 1st Samuel 16:7:


“Pay no attention to how tall and handsome he is, I have rejected
him, because I do not judge as people judge.s
They look at the outward appearance, but I look at the heart.”

I strongly believe that it is wisdom that actuated Dwight Eisenhower into


asserting that;
“What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight,
It is the size of the fight in the dog.”

Ask your neighbor;


“Do you have enough fight in you?”

Jesus says, we will know them by their fruits.

We must all learn and remember today that:


“What lies before us and what lies behind us are small and tiny
matters compared to what lies within us.”

SONG: TAKE TIME TO BE HOLY {SDA HYMNAL NO. 500}-W.D. LONGSTAFF


Take time to be holy; Speak oft with thy Lord;
Abide in Him always; And feed on His word;
Make friends of God’s children; Help those who are weak;
Forgetting in nothing; His blessings to seek.

Take time to be holy; The world rushes on;


Spend much time in secret; with Jesus alone;
By looking to Jesus; Like Him thou shalt be;
Thy friends in thy conduct; His likeness shall see.

Take time to be holy; Let Him be thy guide;


And run not before Him; Whatever betide;
In joy or in sorrow; Still follow thy Lord;
And looking to Jesus, Still trust in His word.

Take time to be holy; Be calm in thy soul;


Each thought and each motive; Beneath His control;
Thus led by His Spirit; To fountains of love;
Thou soon shalt be fitted; For service above.

SIXTH:
On every surface you walk, you must leave your mark.
No matter the situation, you must continue to serve God in
everything.

Human beings often blame circumstances for what they are:


Yet the truth is that;
“People, who get on in the world, are people who get up and look for the
circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.”

It is never our circumstances that wretch us, it is we who wretch ourselves;


“For, we never attach positive meanings and significance to events
and circumstances that we encounter.”

When the historian Charles A. Beard was asked his major lessons in history
he answered:
First:
Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power.
Second:
The mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind exceedingly small.
Third:
The bee fertilizes the flower it robs.
Fourth:
When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.
Jesus bids us in Revelation 2:10;
“Be faithful, even if you have to die, and I will give you the crown
of life.”

Henry David Thoreau, a notable American writer once said that;


“The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.”

Friends;
We must dare, and dare again and go on daring knowing that what
we desire is also somewhere desiring us.

SONG: DOES JESUS CARE? {SDA HYMNAL 181}---FRANK E. GRAEFF


Does Jesus care, when my heart is pained;
Too deeply for mirth and song;
And the burdens press, and the cares distress;
And the way grows weary and long;

O yes, He cares---I know He cares!


His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary;
I know my savior cares.

Does Jesus care, when my way is dark;


With a nameless dread and fear?
As the daylight fades, into deep night shades;
Does He care enough to be near?

Does Jesus care, when I’ve said good-bye;


To the dearest on earth to me;
And my sad heart aches, till it nearly breaks--;
Is it aught to Him? Does He see?

SEVENTH:
Death is your eventuality, yet your deeds, immortalized in the
Books of God, will be the basis for according you rewards.

Love it or hate it;


“Where the dream starts is where it usually ends;
“Where the water started running is where it runs back to”
Death is a part of life, and death itself gives meaning to our existence
because it reminds us of how precious life is.

We are responsible for ourselves; we are our own life’s coaches;


Therefore;
We must make the good we long to see in this world.

Let us live professing what we are for,


Rather than;
Getting out to announce what we are against!

Ladies and Gentlemen:


At the end of your life, it is what you shall have built that will
shelter you.

*As such;
“We must light the candle instead of cursing the darkness.”

May we be a testimony to others even without opening our mouths.

Friends,
“It is not how many books or how long a pencil writes that
matters, but the quality of its writings.”

Abraham Lincoln put it this way;


“And in the end, it is not the years in your life that count;
It is the life in your years.”

In the end, may your life end in the light of Revelation 14:13;
“Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.
‘Yes’, says the Spirit, ‘That they may rest from their labors and
their works follow them.”

SONG: WHEN I COME TO THE RIVER:

When I come to the river; at the ending of day;


When the last winds of sorrows are blown;
There’ll be somebody waiting to show me the way;
I won’t have to cross Jordan alone!
I won’t have to cross Jordan alone!
Jesus died for my sins to atone;
When the darkness I see, He’ll be waiting for me;
I won’t have to cross Jordan alone!

Often times I’m forsaken and weary and sad;


When it seems that my friends all have gone;
There’s one thought that cheers me and makes my heart glad;
I won’t have to cross Jordan alone!

Though the bellows of sorrows, and troubles my sleep;


Christ my savior will care for His own;
Till the end of the journey, my soul He will keep;
I won’t have to cross Jordan alone!

Ladies and gentlemen;


If you ask God for strength;
God will give you difficulty to make you strong;
If you ask God for wisdom;
God will give you problems to solve so as to be wise;
If you ask God for prosperity;
God will give you a brain and brawn to work.

Brothers and sisters:


Don’t make the wrong request from God in prayer:

Never ask God to take away your habit, to serve Him;


God will say NO,
“It is not for God to take away, but for you to give it up!”

Never ask God to make your handicapped relative whole, to serve Him;
God will say NO,
“His spirit is whole, his body is only temporary!”

Never ask God to grant you patience, to serve Him;


God will say NO,
“Patience is a bi-product of tribulations; it is not granted,
it is learned!”

Never ask God to give you happiness, to serve Him;


God will say NO,
“Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings
you closer to God!”

Never ask God to make your spirit grow, to serve Him;


God will say NO,
“You must grow on your own! But God will prune you to make
you fruitful!”

Never ask God for all things that you may enjoy in life, to serve Him;
God will say NO,
“God has already given you life, so that you may enjoy all
things!”

Only ask God to make you love others as much as He loves you;
Because;
“Love is the basis of all his giving, even Christ Jesus His son to
die on the cross for the salvation of mankind.”

Friends:
“Nails alone could not have kept Jesus on the cross had love not
held Him there.”

Jesus wanted to give a meaning to your life;


Jesus wanted to change your destiny;
Jesus can change you now if only you are willing to change.

He changed Abram to Abraham;


He changed Saul to Paul;
He changed a stick into a snake and a snake into a stick;
He changed the red sea into a high-way;
He changed prostitute Rahab into a missionary;
He changed water to wine at Cana of Galilee;
He changed two fishes and five loaves of bread into a feast;
He changed fishermen into fishers of men;
He can exchange your cross for a crown today;

Friends before I call it a day;


Let me offer a story, you may forget me, but never forget this story.
Remember it and you will be wise; execute its teaching and you will
win.

“After the resurrection of Christ, Satan summoned an urgent meeting to


revisit the impact of the resurrection of Christ and what they could do.

“One of the Demons said,


“Tell mankind it is a fraud that Jesus rose.”
“No, it won’t work, about 600 people have seen Him alive including His
disciples.” Satan replied.

The second Demon said;


“Let us attack the word of God, burn it not to reach the people.”

“In that way we won’t stop the work of God, His Spirit will still be
there.” Satan said.

“I have an answer Lucifer,” said the third Demon.


“Yes, go ahead,” said Satan.
“Tell man it is all true, Jesus rose and He is alive, but there is still time to
get saved.”
“Yes,” said Satan, “That is it.”
Yes, that is the greatest deception Satan is using right now.”

Most people will miss both the pleasures of this world and the treasures
of the Kingdom of Heaven by slighting the salvation of God.
Jesus calls them foolish virgins.

After this I assure you Heaven will be saying ’It is finished”;


The last tear for the sinner has been shed;
The last agonizing prayer for the sinner offered;
The last burden for the sinner borne.

The bonds that tied them to this world were stronger than their
attraction Heavenward.

Right and wrong had been placed before them; many desired right but
made no worthwhile effort to follow it. IT WILL BE TOO LATE.
STORY:--Mr. Michael Wamalwa Kijana.
In the year 2004; Kenyans from all walks of life thronged the Jomo
Kenyatta International airport.

At the airport, there are two subdivisions, a part for luggages and that
for passengers.

At the terminus of the conveyer belts with the luggages is a tax


assessment office.
All lugagages of all sizes are tagged with taxation sheets showing what
percentage of tax has been charged.
But, on this day; one large and shinnily wrapped laggage had a very
unique tag; it read—CARGO WITHOUT VALUE.

When the luggage was opened, many flocked to view the cargo without
value-- and friends, it turned out to be the remains of the then vice-
president Wamalwa Kijana.

To the airport authorities;


Wamalwa with His degrees in Law from Cambridge;
His status as a Ford-Kenya party leader;
His status as a Vice-president of the republic;
Was nothing but a cargo without value.

Friends I have then remembered that;


“Irrespective of what you might think you are in the society, or
what you might be, if you don’t have Jesus Christ in you, heaven sees
you as useless,--A CARGO WITHOUT VALUE!”

Bob Sam Olela sings it this way:
Ni kazi bure, ni kazi bure;

God has brought me all the way to add value to your life by giving
you Jesus.

I therefore make this solemn request;


“That if you want Jesus Christ in your life, to add you value to it so
that you can become a better pencil, come upfront so that I may put
you before the Lord.”

“That if you feel that the heavens see you as a cargo without value
come upfront.”

Don’t delay brother, don’t delay sister;


“This is your opportunity to rise from the ashes and grab glory”
