ST IRENE
THE
St Irene was born in the city of Magedon, Persia, during the fourth century - the
daughter of the pagan Prefect, Licinius, named Penelope.
As she was very beautiful and highly intelligent, her father kept her isolated in a high
tower from the age of six so that she would not be exposed to Christianity.
Thirteen young maidens kept her company, and she was tutored by an old man
named Apellianos who was assigned to provide her with the best possible
education.
Unknown to Licinius, St Apellianos was a Christian, and during their lessons, he taught
St Irene about Christ our Lord and Saviour and everything concerning our Faith and
Holy Virtues.
When Penelope reached adolescence, her parents began to consider suitable candidates
for her marriage.
One day, a dove flew through the window carrying an olive branch in its beak, which it
dropped upon a table. Then an huge eagle swooped in carrying a wreath of flowers
in its massive claws, which was also dropped upon the table. Finally, a raven flew in
carrying a snake, which fell on the table.
Naturally, Penelope was puzzled by these strange occurrences and wondered what they
meant, so she spoke to her beloved Tutor, Apellianos, who explained that the dove
signified her education, and the olive branch symbolised the Grace of God, which
she would received in Holy Baptism. The eagle with the wreath of flowers
represented success in her future life, while the raven and the snake foretold her
future suffering and sorrow.
At the end of the conversation St Apellianos told her that our Lord wished to Betroth
her to Himself but she would enure much suffering for the sake of her Heavenly
Bridegroom.
St Irene refused all marriage proposals, having Joyfully received Holy Baptism from St
Timothy the Priest, and being named Irene (Peace).
She even dared to try to persuade her mother to become Christian, and shortly
afterwards, she destroyed all her fathers idols, but when Licinius realised his
daughters refusal to marry any of the suitors he chose for her nor to worship the
pagan idols was due to her conversion to Christianity, he had her seized and
shackled like a common criminal and handed over to the executioners for torture.
St Irene was bound up tightly and thrown beneath the hooves of wild, stampeding
horses so that they might trample her to death, but the horses stopped in their
tracks and refused to move another inch until suddenly one of the horses
charged Licinius, seized his right hand and tore it from his arm. Then it knocked
him down and began to trample him with its sharp, powerful hooves.
Terrified, the executioners immediately untied the young Virgin Martyr through whose
Intercessory Prayers, her fathers severed hand became re-attached and healed, to
the great astonishment and shock of all those present who witnessed everything!
Having experienced such an extraordinary Divine Miracle, Licinius and his wife, and
many of the witnesses, (about 3000 men) believed in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus
Christ, and rejected paganism.
Licinius, resigned from his administrative duties, and for the rest of his life he devoted
himself to the Service of our Lord Jesus Christ. St Irene lived in the house of her
aged Teacher, St Apellianos, and preached the Divine Truth of Christ among the
pagans, converting many of them to the Path of Salvation.
When Sedecius, the new Prefect of the city, heard of this incredible Miracle, he
summoned St Apellianos, and questioned him about St Irenes manner of life.
St Apellianos explained that St Irene, like other Christians, lived in strict temperance,
devoting herself to constant Prayer and reading Holy Writings.
Sedecius then summoned the young Saint and urged her to stop preaching about
Christ, and tried to persuade her to sacrifice to the idols, whereupon she resolutely
Confessed her Faith fearless of his wrath, and quite prepared to be martyred for
Christ.

The frustrated, angry Perfect immediately ordered her to be arrested and thrown into
a pit filled with poisonous vipers and serpents, where she spent ten days in the pit
but remained unharmed, for an Angel of our Lord protected her and sustained her.
Sedecius ascribed her Deliverance to sorcery, so he subjected St Irene to many other
vicious tortures - all of which she survived unharmed!
Due to her heartfelt teaching of the Divine Truth and so many wondrous Miracles,
even more souls converted to Christ, and rejected the inanimate useless idols.
Sedecius was deposed by his son, Savorus, who persecuted Christians with an even
greater zeal than his father had done. So St Irene returned to Magedon in Persia to
meet Savorus and his army, whereupon she besought him to end the persecutions.
When he stubbornly refused to have mercy on anyone, St Irene prayed for Divine
Assistance, and his entire army was suddenly struck by blindness. Being naturally
Compassionate, she prayed again, asking for Divine Mercy, and they instantly
recovered their sight!
Despite the clearly evident Almighty Power of our Living God, Savorus refused to
acknowledge Him, and because of his blatant insolence and blaspheny, he was
struck and killed by a bolt of lightning.
St Irene remained there, Enlightening the Spiritually Dead pagans, and performing
many Miracles that Glorified and Honoured the Lord our God. She even returned to
the tower built by her father, and accompanied by the Priest, Timothy, they taught,
converted and Baptised 5,000 souls. to Christ.
They journeyed to the city of Callinicus, or Callinicum (possibly on the Euphrates River
in Syria) that was ruled by King Numerian, the son of Sebastian, who soon ordered
her to be arrested and tortured by being placed into three bronze oxen, which
were heated red-hot. Despite being transferred from one to another, by the Grace
of our Loving God, St Irene remained uninjured, and thousands of witnesses
embraced Christianity.
Sensing his impending death, King Numerian instructed his eparch, Babdonos, to
continue torturing the Great Holy Martyr in order to force her to sacrifice to the
lifeless idols. However, the brutal tortures remained ineffective, which caused
innumerable witnesses to turn their heart and soul to our Lord Jesus Christ.
After being released by the frustrated authorities, St Irene and her companions
travelled to the city of Constantina, forty miles northeast of Edessa. By 330, the
Persian king Sapor II (309-379) had heard of St Irenes Great Miracles. To prevent
her from winning even more people to Christ, she was immediately arrested,
beheaded, and then buried.
Nevertheless, our Lord God sent an Angel to raise her up again, and she went into the
city of Mesembria. After seeing her alive and hearing her preach, the local King
accepted Christ, and was Baptized together with a great number of his subjects.
Wishing to Enlighten even more souls, St Irene went to Ephesos, where she taught the
people and performed many Miracles. The Lord revealed to her that the end of her
life was approaching.
Then St Irene left the city accompanied by six people, including her former Teacher, St
Apellianos. On the outskirts of the town, she found an unoccupied tomb and,
having made the Sign of the Cross, she entered, and directed her companions to
close the entrance to the cave with a large stone, which they did.
When Christians visited the cave four days later, they did not find the body of St Irene.
St Apellianos had returned after only two days, and had found that the enormous
rock had been moved, and that the tomb was empty.
Thus did God Glorify St Irene, who Loved Him with all her heart and soul, having
devoted her life to serving only Him.
Although many of these Miracles may seem improbable to those who are sceptical,
nothing is impossible with God. St Irene led thousands of people to Christ through
her preaching, and by her example. The Church continues to honour her memory
and to seek her Heavenly Intercession.
By her holy prayers, may the Lord have mercy upon us and save us.
