this black-tie gala, so mark your calendars for Thursday, October 21, 2010! You wont want to
miss this years Angel Ball as the Foundation honors the lead guitarist of one of the worlds
most celebrated rock bands, U2s The Edge and his wife, director, choreographer and dancer,
Morleigh Steinberg; COTY, Inc. Chief Executive Officer, Bernd Beetz for his incredible work
in support of blood cancer research through COTY's DKMS Foundation; and Sean Parker,
Managing Partner of the Founders Fund and creator of online music sharing site Napster and
Facebook Causes. We expect this event to sell out very quickly so, only a limited number of
individual tickets at $1,500.00 will be available. Table levels begin at $15,000.00, so reserve your

continues its mission to fund the best junior investigators working in cancer research today.
Twelve of the nations leading young scientists receive $75,000.00 per year to sustain their labs
and further solidify their research careers. Dr. Stephen D. Nimer, Chief of Hematology at
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Chairman of the Foundations Medical Advisory
Board reaffirmed that only the crme de la crme are chosen for these three-year Medical
Research Awards.

Due to the overwhelming success of the Angel Ball 2009, ten conventional and two integrative
(complementary) medicine grants were selected from the over 80 applicants. The Shulamit
Benjamini Sandberg Research Grant was established in memory of Foundation sponsor Lorraine
Schwartzs mother. Additional monies partially funded another of these projects in memory of
two ardent Foundation supporters, Jeffrey Steiner and Alan Beeber, as raised by their families.
These twelve promising scientists hail from the nations leading research centers including Fox
Chase Cancer Center, St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, Dartmouth Medical School and
the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

A Daughters Wish

Helen Keller noted, Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of
it. I believe this with all my heart. My life has been an incredible journey from motherhood to a
career in music to my commitment to a cause that means the world to me. In 1996, my daughter,
Gabrielle, a 27-year-old actress and Hodgkins lymphoma survivor, developed acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). In remission for the second time, she needed a bone marrow transplant
and I was the perfect match. AML eventually took my beloved Gabrielles life but not her spirit,
which lives on in the work of the organization her sisters and I created in her memory, Gabrielles
Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. It was Gabrielles last wish to help spare others the
suffering she had endured. We believed the best way to honor her memory was to turn our grief
into a positive force for others.
Gabrielles Angel Foundation funds cutting-edge science in both mainstream research as well as integrative and complementary
medicine which focus on prevention, treatment and quality of life issues of leukemia, lymphoma and related cancers. These are
the countrys most promising young investigators just starting their labs. Our grantees have gone on to obtain federal NIH funding,
published papers, become heads of research institutions, and filed patents on their discoveries. They are Howard Hughes Medical
Institute Early Career Scientists, Leukemia & Lymphoma Special Fellows and on Stand Up 2 Cancers Dream Teamjust a few examples
of the brilliant minds being funded by Gabrielles Angel Foundation! The inspiration is in the numbers and in the many lives this
research touches: over $13 million awarded to 60 of the countrys best and brightest, making Gabrielles Angel Foundation one of the
largest non-governmental sources of grant support to blood cancer researchers in the nation.
Gabrielle believed that life is a quest, something to be lived out loud and celebrated. So, each year we host an incredible party, our
signature gala, The Angel Ball, to celebrate life while raising money for these amazing scientists. I am so thankful to all of my friends
in the entertainment industry who, for one very special autumn night, gather together with a common wishto eradicate cancer in
our lifetime.
I know in my heart Gabrielle would be so proud of all the Foundation has accomplished. We have been approved two years in a row
as one of the Independent Charities of Americas Best in America charities for upholding our commitment to our donors and
sponsors to meet and maintain the highest standards of accountability. 75 cents of every dollar raised by Gabrielles Angel
Foundation directly funds these future leaders of cancer research who continue to push the boundaries of what is possible.
As a songwriter, I understand the healing power of music and its ability to touch the deepest parts of us. I believe that from grief
and tragedy something new can emerge which makes the world a better place and allows us to remember those we have lost. Cancer
has taken my mother, my sister and my daughter from me, but not my resolve to make a difference. As we approach our fifteenth
year, I remain more hopeful than ever for new advancements, a breakthrough, even a cure. I feel strongly that Gabrielles vision and
strength of spirit continue to light the path of Gabrielles Angel Foundation every step of the way. I believe that what we do together
can create miracles.

Co-Founder Hosts Fashion Fete

Americana Manhasset, Long Islands premiere luxury shopping
destination, brought their exquisite merchandise to Denise
Richs Manhattan residence for a preview of the summers
newest fashions. Fortunately for guests, the rainy April afternoon gave way to sunshine that filled that apartment. The
break in the weather coupled with an amazing 25% of all proceeds going to the Foundation afforded attendees the perfect
incentives to spend. Guests were encouraged to sip, shop and
splurge and through their generosity, the Foundation received
over $72,000 for cancer research. Haute couture stalwarts Dior,
Etro, Fendi, Frette, Hirshleifers, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and
Spring Flowers beautifully displayed their wares while a select
list of supporters nabbed the latest high-end items for their
summer jaunts. The Director of Americanas VIP Personal
Shopping Services, Danielle Merollo and Marketing Director,
Rebecca Hollander organized the festive afternoon with catering provided by Mary Giuliani Catering & Events and parting
gifts by Zegna, Herms and others. Americana Manhasset has
long supported Gabrielles Angel Foundation through their
Champions for Charity event. Last years holiday promotion
netted the Foundation over $15,000. With the ongoing and very
generous support from Americana Manhasset President
Deirdre Costa Major and its Owner, Frank Castagna, Gabrielles
Angel Foundation looks forward to future events with an

Foundation Announces Angel Ambassador

Survivor: Africa winner, Ethan Zohn,
knows the true meaning of adventure.
So, its no surprise that after being
diagnosed with a rare form of cancer,
CD 20+ Hodgkins Lymphoma, and living
to tell the tale, that he continues his
crusade to help make a difference in the
lives of others. A self-proclaimed soccer
crazy, cancer crusher and big dreamer,
Ethan has agreed to speak out on behalf of
Gabrielles Angel Foundation as an Angel
Ambassador. As an Angel Ambassador,
Ethan will share the latest Foundation
news through his vast reach in the media
and speak from his experience as a cancer
survivor. He will also attend various
Foundation functions throughout the
year to impress upon a wider audience the
urgent need for funding cancer research.
His charitable work speaks for itself. After winning Survivor: Africa in
2001, Ethan Co-Founded Grassroots Soccer, a nonprofit organization
that trains professional soccer players to teach African children, through a
tailor-made curriculum, about HIV/AIDS prevention. His desire to change
the world extends to other charities, as well, including America Scores and
the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Ethan has been recognized
for his philanthropic efforts by the International Association of Physicians
in AIDS Care, received the Heroes Among Us Award from the Boston
Celtics and many others. He works with the Alliance for Global Conservation to raise awareness of the links between international conservation
and treatments for deadly diseases and, like Co-Founder Denise Rich,
Ethan pens a column for Tonic.com.
Gabrielle Rich Aouad believed that Life is an adventure, a quest Ethan
Zohn lives his life with the passion and drive befitting a true survivor. His
many accomplishments speak to the limitless possibilities one committed
individual can attain. Gabrielles Angel Foundation is very grateful to have

Teens Raise $70,000 for Foundation!

York Prep Junior, Andrew Warren, and a committee of his high-school friends rallied
the troops for the second Teens Making a Difference on Friday, May 7th raising an
incredible $70,000.00 for Gabrielles Angel Foundation. Sponsored by Rocawear and
espace, the event drew over 300 New York-area high school students dressed to the
nines and ready for a good time.
The excitement began on the red carpet where the teens mingled with celebrities such
as Tinsley Mortimer and Jules Kirby (High Society), Mark Indelicato (Ugly Betty),
Broadway star Orfeh (Legally Blonde) and Sports Illustrated model Esti Ginsberg.
They munched on delicious donated treats from Pop Burger, Sant Ambroeus, and
Serafina and desserts by TLCs The Cake Boss and Crumbs while Serendipity 3 served
up their signature frozen hot chocolate. Student DJ Mac Petrycki opened for DJ PS1
who then handed over the spinning duties to DJ Enferno. The DJs kept the dance floor
packed and the crowd went wild when Cash Money/Universal Artist Jay Sean got up
and rocked the house with three of his hit singles.

more. The teens enthusiasm inspired everyone involved to create another memorable

Grantee Shaves Head in Support of Pediatric Cancer Patients

Dr. Alex Huang has a missionto find a cure for childhood cancer. Thats why, for the second year in a
row, this 2007 Foundation grantee showed solidarity with his young patients by shaving his head and all
for a very good cause. In conjunction with Team UH Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital, Dr. Huang
& his colleagues at Case Western Reserve joined the thousands of volunteers participating in the St.
Baldricks Foundation St. Patricks Day shave to show compassion for these children who typically lose
their hair during treatments. The Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital Team, with seventeen participants,
raised nearly $19,000 earning them the honor of #1 Team in the City of Cleveland. Dr. Huang led them
in fundraising by bringing in over $4000. His lab will continue to accept donations through the end of
June with all proceeds directly benefiting their research. As of press time, St. Baldricks Foundation
experienced a record-breaking year raising over $19.3 million for childhood cancer research. In the
United States, more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease. As a physician, Dr. Huang
works tirelessly so that there will come a day when he can follow the sentence Your child has cancer
with the words We have a cure. As a parent, Dr. Huang prays for the success of this mission every day.

Foundation Grantee Awarded Million Dollar

of Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center
and his colleague Yi Zheng, Ph.D. recently received a
five-year award totaling $1.04 million from NIHs
National Cancer Institute for their grant entitled
Targeting CDC42 in Leukemia Stem Cells. The
scientists are part of the Cancer and Blood Diseases

Dr. Mulloys research has shown that human blood stem cells can be induced to
make leukemia upon introduction of a leukemia oncogene into these cells. His
laboratory developed a novel mouse model of acute myeloid leukemia (or
AML), one of the first models that use human cells rather than mouse cells to
produce leukemia. Dr. Mulloy's discovery heralded a significant advance for the
field of leukemia biology, since the signals that are important in mouse cancer
can be different from the signals needed for human cancer. With funding from
Gabrielle's Angel Foundation, his laboratory has used this model system to test
novel therapeutic approaches targeted to the key events that occur during the
development of leukemia.
According to the press release from Cincinnati Childrens, the focus of Dr.
Mulloys NIH-NCI studies (research into CDC42) involves a protein that
normally is crucial to cell adhesion, survival and migration. Scientists have
learned that under certain conditions CDC42 stimulates development of disease
initiating cells in bone marrow and leukemia stem cells, which they believe can
fuel prolonged disease, relapse and mortality. Ultimately, the goal of Dr.
Mulloys newly funded research is to develop a new therapeutic strategy for
targeting CDC42 to eliminate leukemia stem cells in bone marrow for leukemias
that are resistant to conventional chemotherapies.
Were really excited about this novel approach to cancer therapy, remarked
Mulloy on this five-year grant. We expect that inhibition of CDC42 will promote the release of leukemia stem cells from the bone marrow and make them
more susceptible to chemotherapy. He emphasized the important role his 2007
grant from the Foundation played in these discoveries stating, The funding
from Gabrielles Angel Foundation gave me the flexibility to put some resources
into these other studies. I want to thank you again for investing in me and my

June, the Director
of Translational
Research at the Abramson Cancer Center
at the University of Pennsylvania and an
investigator with the Abramson Family
Cancer Research Institute, joins the
Foundations team of nine of the nations
top scientific researchers. Dr. June
maintains a research laboratory that studies
various mechanisms of lymphocyte
activation as they relate to immune
tolerance and adoptive immuno-therapy.
He has co-authored more than 250 peerreviewed publications and is the recipient
of numerous awards, including the Frank
Brown Berry Prize in Federal Medicine
(1997), the William Osler Award (2002),
and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Freedom to
Discover Award (20052009). Dr. June
currently serves as President of the Clinical
Immunology Society. After graduating
from the Naval Academy in Annapolis,
Maryland, and Baylor College of Medicine
in Houston, Texas, Dr. June completed his
graduate training in immunology at the
World Health Organization in Geneva,
Switzerland. He then went on to pursue
postdoctoral training in transplantation
biology and medical oncology at the Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in
Seattle, Washington. Gabrielles Angel
Foundation considers Dr. June a valuable
and exceptional addition to its team.
