Calligram

Research

I like how Thubten Chokyi

has used a cursive type
face in order to achieve a
dress created with letters.
This inspires me to create a
fashion style calligram with
the use of letters.

I carried research by looking at examples

of calligrams produced by different graphic
designers, along with others. Most of it
includes self-potraits as I love to draw them.
In addition, it has helped me to figure out how
I can use text tocreate a visually clear and
appealing image.

I really liked the way he
has used the letters to
create an image of a person.
My favourite part of the
calligram is the shadows
that were used. It creates
a 3D effect that enables
the image to come to life.
This is a method that I may
incorporate for my own.

I like the way this

designer has used
different typefaces to
create the shapes of
the flowers. Especially
as they are in different
sizes. This inspires me to
possibly create flowers
out of letters.

Joni James

I like how Joni James has

combined a bold and regular
typeface to create an image
of a flower. To avoid having
a lot of whitespace within the
flower she has used a larger
font on the petals. In additon
the white space is something
I will need to consider while I
am creating my calligram.

Sketches

These are the skectches I created based

on gaining inspiration from my research.
In total I have nine ideas I sketched.
Therefore, I love music, drawing portraits,
perfume, fashion and flowers. This is the
reason why I decided to incovcgfgrporate
these interests for my calligam ideas.

Feedback
I received feedback for the sketched ideas in order to know how I can improve it to develop my calligram in illustrator. Below are questions that needed to be answered
from my peers and tutor.
Feedback from peer:
Clarity: Is it immediately obvious what the calligram is depicting? If the answer is no, how can it be developed to represent the image more coherently?
It is visible - a portrait and face.
Creativity and originality: How can the calligram ne refined to be more creative and challenege conventional typography? Is it original or is it a solution that is commonly
seen on Google Images?
You can use bold and a normal tpyeface together, add the opacity. You can also add the objects to your portrait (the last one) such as a heart for example. I like the first
one, but I prefer the fonts from the last one.
Typography: How can the calligram use typography more effectively? For example using a serif instead of a sans serif in places or extening and distorting parts of the font.
I wouldnt mix cursive letters with capitals. I would play with size and make it bold as well.
Feedback from Peer:
In what way does the typeface I chose work with the image (this question is referring to the self portrait calligram with the hearts)?
It helps over all give shape and bring it out of the page. It doesnt look plain and shapes the face, hair and clothes perfectly, blending the image.
Answers to the set questions from the feedback sheet:
I like the two self-portraits best. You clearly see the subject and it and both are original and creative so I think you should be fine there. Its mostly just picking the image
now.
Feedback from Tutor:
My tutor mentioned how I should develop the text for the hair by enabling it to be more wavy; using the method of using alt drag to copy the typography several times to
achieve this effect. They also said how I can use commas to create the eyelashes and to incorporate for the nose.

The screenshots below illustrates the development of my calligram I created in Adobe

Illustrator. I decided to develop my self portrait idea as I felt I would enjoy creating it the most.
I took my feedback into consideration, however, I still kept the curisve and capital typfaces
together as I felt it worked well with the image.
I used the font, Nene WeNo Width Handwrite from dafont.com to incorporate for the face,
neck and hair; I used the font Just Coles Cursive for the clothing to convey the smooth and
soft texture.

Removing the hypenation within the text.

Using the area type tool to fill in the areas with text.

I watched a tutorial in illustrator that enabled me to

effectively add shadows to my self portrait calligram

Rotating comma for eyelash I used the typeface modern as it creates a curved effect
that eyelashes naturally achieve.

I watched a tutorial on youtube in order to be able to know how to

reflect a shape in illustrator.

Final Design

Filling the hair with colour and then using alt and drag in order to place
name multiple times on top of each other in order to create a wavy
effect:
I was inspired by my drawing on the front of my
portfolio in order to create the calligram. I incorporated more layering of the typefaces around my
neck and face in order to make it look more 3D.

Research
My festival poster is based on flowers and is aimed for men
and women aged 40 and over. Initally, I wanted to create
a fashion poster but I decided creating a festival based on
flowers would be more exciting for me.
I carried out research based on different posters from
designers, along with others in order to gain inspiration for
layout, colours and typography.

Festival Poster

The research also involved discovering what my target

audience would be interested in regarding flowers.

Designer: Bryant W I like how he has

changed the direction of the text to be
presented vertical on the left and right
side. The simplicity of the illustration
is effective because the use of different
shades of pink, purple along with the
colour, white, it makes the poster appear
interesting. This is emphasized with the
use of the bubbles.

Designer: eEmily Caufield I like how

the dance poster has used subtle ceolours in order for the text and illustration
to be the main focus. The typeface flows

Mr. Mistler I like how the designer has

enabled the text to be a smaller size in
order for the illustration to be the main focus of the poster. The combination of soft
and dark colours works well together and
I think it is a very creative poster because
of how the butterfly wings convey different
instruments.

Steven Speeny: I really like how the

designer has used different type faces
and sizes. It works well together for
the poster and my favourite element is
how he used splashes of paint across
the poster without looking too busy.
This inspires me for my poster as I
would like to incorporate splashes of
paint for an art festival poster I may
create.

Designer: Louise Gellert. I really like

the simplicity of the poster; the use
of two colours pink and blue. The
main text incorporates a photograph
of flowers and is the largest among the
rest. In addition, the typeface in block
capitals which is effective as whoever
is reading the poster will be able to
see the most important information
they will need to acknowledge straight
away.
The layout and colours inspires me for
my poster as I may consider using this
technique but ensuring I go beyond

Designer: Patrice Bourgealt. The

layout of the poster shows part of a
paper flower towards the right side
of the page. This is effective as the
audience would not have to see the
whole picture to identify it. Therefore,
this will attract their attention
immediately and enables it to have
more of a visual appeal.
I would like to experiment with this
technique for my flower festival poster
and to expand it further by enabling
the text to have more visual appeal.

Layout

I researched differnt flowers based on the Ikebana

arragement in order to be inspired for the layout
of my poater; my friend suggested to do so in her
feedback she provded.

The most common colours

From carrying out my research, I found out that the most common colours are pink, purple, white, orangwe and yellow. Noticing this has enabled me to incorporate them for my festival poister. In addition, below is
a colour swarch:

Sketches
I created various sketches conveying different ideas
before settling on producing a flower festival poster. I
experimented with ink, pen, pastels, watercolour, glitter
glue and colour pencils.

I created more sketches for the flower festival

poster to develop in Illustrator due to feedback
based on the first poster I created.

I created watercolour drawings of flowers to use as part of

my festival poster for development in Illustrator. I had to start
the assignment from scratch for the second time due to the
feedback I received from my tutor.

Experimentation/Process
The first poster I created
For the first poster, I looked at tutorials regarding how to create 3D text
and flowers from shapes.

Tutors feedback
She said I should try experimenting with Indesign using create outlines and then dragging the image onto the text in order for it to be incorporated.
Ines feedback
Draw on top of the flower and work on it in illustrator instead.
Jess feedback final festival poster
The poster is good because the images on it relate to the theme of the festival so that it is obvious what the festival is about from far away. I also
like the font with the leaves integrated in it because its quite different. The use of complimentary colours shows you have thought about the
colours you are using in the poster. You have put enough text on the poster to get across the important information you would need in a poster.
The poster could be improved by developing it further. You could experiment with different colours to see what works and makes it eye catching from a distance because I would not necessarily find it eye popping and stop to look at the poster. Keep the target audience in mind while
developing the poster further, do this by adding detail to the hand drawn flower.
Nicoles Feedback
It's a good start and I can understand why he thought it was simple. First off, change the font script to something a bit fancier. Flowers = fancy
and for the flowers... Maybe change the picture to something you'd see in a study? Then draw over it in another layer and make it a bit more
modern, like a geometric flower.
Also for flower images good to draw look up ikebana flower arrangements. They have some really brilliant arrangments you can get ideas from.
Or even botany gardens. Like Kew Gardens.
You don't need a complicated image so much as a good arrangement and really? Nice grin emoticon How about a sketch of one of their lilyponds?
A watercolour sketch would be lovely and add a bit of pen to make it more modern.
This is Nicoles example:
I asked if I should still keep it handrawn and she said yes,
I should play to my strengths.
simple text or maybe cursive font? That would be pretty
But not too cursive that you can't read it.

Final Design
I used a poster from my research as
a refernce in order to create my final
design. Observing the layout enabled
me to achieve simplcity for the logo. In
addition, the main elements of poster
design I struggled with is proxmity enabling enough white space on the page
and using the rule of thirds to
used two fonts in order for the typefaces
to have contrast.
The two fonts I used were Ewardian
Script ITC regular for the Flower
Festival title and Embrima for the rest
of the information.

Resarch
I found a very good website called behance.net where other designers work is
presented regarding personal branding. Looking at the different pieces of work
and how they have used colour, enabled me to see how I can develop a logo that
represents my company and personality.

Visual Identity

Visual identity by other designers

Designer: Martina Meregelli. I like how the designer has
used a cursive typeface for her brand against a light blue,
circular shape in the background. The colour implies how
she has used it to represent her calm personality and her
possible interest for the sea and outdoors.
In her personal branding she has shown the colours that
should be used for her logo and how it looks in black
and white, along with a two different shades of blue. She
references CYMK which is the standard colours that needs
to be used when a logo is ready for print this is very
important for me to consider when I am developing my
logo in illustrator.

Designer: Andres Valderrama. I like how this designer has

used a neon pink colour against a black background for the logo.
It enables it to be prominent, especially as they have used only
a symbol to represent their brand. In addition, I also like the
pink strokes of lines surrounding the logo it could depict the
designers strong and dominant personality.
The logo seems to represent the initials of the designers name in
a clever way using parallel and vertical lines.
Pink and black are my favourite colours and I would like to try
this technique of creating a symbol representing the initials of
my name.

Designer: Mark Bijasa. I like how the designer has used a symbol
representing the first letter of their surname, surrounded by a box with
two vertical lines across it.
This logo incorporates more elements, however, Mark Bijasa has
still been able to keep the logo simple. It allows me to see how I
can incorporate a few elements for my logo, conveying a quite
complicated design, however still maintaining its simplicity during the
development stage.

Designer: Gioele Reale. This designer has created a monogram that

represents the first letters of her firstname and surname. I like how the
letters are combined together along a curve and the R not fully being
connected with the G.
Gioele Reale has placed the logo on a photograph and it does not clash
because of it being in the colour white. This enables the logo to stand
out being the main focus instead of the image overpowering it. In
addition, I would like to try this technique when I am developing my
logo.

Sketches
-Stick with either portraits or design as a title
-Drawings is too long and art is too cliche

Feedback from peer:

Poster: Typography, Originality, Layout and Colour
- Good amount of originality and use of colour.
- Simplistic but eyecatching and not overly complicated
- You could experiement some more and try layering and playing around with the the font or even how opaque the words are.

The colour scheme, layout of the brand design works well but could be improved by adding texture and making them 3D in design
Target audience
- I think it attracts target audience well
- It is a modern eye-catching design that will catch their attention.
