UNIT Q.2

(a)

A sway pole is used by aerialists for acrobatic tricks. A sway pole consists of a
long thin pole fixed at one end designed such that an aerialist can sway and
perform tricks at the end of the pole. What is the natural frequency in Hertz of a

different from a viscous damped system? Also derive the equation governing the
vibration of a coulomb damped spring-man system.

(b)

The disc of a torsional pendulum has a moment of inertia of 700kg-cm2 and is

immersed in a viscous fluid. The shaft carrying disc has a modulus of rigidity of
35GN/m2. The shaft has a diameter of 14mm and is 420mm long. When the
pendulum is vibrating, the ampiitudes on the same side of'the rest position for
successive cycles are 5o, 3oand 1.8o. Determine:

Q.4

(a)

Explain the principal and working of an undammed dynamic vibration absorber

in detail. Also discuss the effect of mass ratio on the response frequency ratio. [8]

(b) In a refrigeration plant, a section of pipe carrying the refrigerant vibrated

violently at a compressor speed of 240 rpm. To eliminate this difficulty, it was

proposed to clamp a cantilever spring rnan system to the pipe to act as an
absorber for a trial test a 900 gm absorber tuned to 240rpm, resuited in two
natural frequencies of 190 and270 cpm. If the absorber system is to be designed
so that the natural frequencies lie outside the region 160 and 320 cpm, what must
be the weight and spring stiffness?
