It was not a typical day as before tells ..

Who sits on a makeshift

shelter nearby the Jure landslide? Just 72 km away from Kathmandu on 2 nd of August
2014 a huge landslide occurred in the Jure Village which not only took lives of 156
people and left many injured also cutoff the only blood line between Nepal and
China to a halt creating a huge drop in the economy as well.
The rocks would roll down from the top of the hill every now and then which we
thought was natural as the slope is steep. But of the day of the landslide big noises
with massive ground shaking made us leave our house says . Tamang. We
did try to pass the information below but due to telecommunication problem we
could not save the lives. If they had known about the landslide they would have
been alive tells.
There are lots of High Hazard Zone not only on the Koshi Basin but also throughout
the country says ICIMODS Geologist Deo Raj Gurung. As natural disasters could not
be predicted as when it will occur but with proper information and study could
certainly reduce the intensity of the damage. Jure landslide was mapped earlier in
the 1990s,while proper studies only started from 2000, As per the illustration
initially small gully erosion is seen on the top of the . While the gully stream starts
to erode the channel eventually causing landslide.
The landslide of Jure is of mixed type and the trigger mechanics behind it is not
clear till date. As some experts on these fields claims landslide trigger to be induced
due to rapid deforestation while there are other experts of the same filed stating
otherwise.
SIndhupalchok has also suffered from flood and other natural disasters before and
Jure Landslide was not definitely the first. In 1982 similar case of Landslide dam
outburst flood (LDOF) in Balefi River (one of the tributary of sunkoshi) killing 97
people.
Sindhupalchok's rugged topography, in a seismically active area combined with
shoddy construction practices, has made the area one of Nepals most disasterprone. More than 3 major flood disasters have struck in the area over the past 30
years, claiming lives and affecting economy , according to ICIMOD.
In the development of 14 years (2000-2014) the people of Jure experienced a huge
loss which could never be healed. Many organizations , research groups ,
academia , development organizations and government organizations have been
working on indentification of these types of vulnerable zones but they are only
limited to the paper. If we had known this place is high hazard zone we would not
have constructed houses out here. Says local. There is also a conflicting case
since the area before Jure landslide was quite flat and people started building
houses there. Even though floods of 81 and the alarming water level of Sunkoshi
river, people still carelessly build houses and settle on the flood plains . .. the
government , policy makers do need to get a fresh view on saving peoples

economy as of delineating areas of high vulnerability securing both peoples life and
investment .
