Built in the early 20th century by German Jewish architects fleeing the rise of the Nazis, The
White City is the largest collection of Bauhaus style buildings of any city in the world. Over 4,000
buildings were created from the early 1930s to 1950s, seen as an outstanding example of
innovative town planning and architecture. Recognised by UNESCO in 2003 as an outstanding
example of new town planning and architecture, many of the once-neglected buildings have
been refurbished to their former glory, with over 1,500 earmarked for further restoration.

Flaneurism 07 - Searching for Soho

Rik Moran 2016 no ISBN Acqn 26206
Pb 21x15cm 22pp 18col ills 7
Soho, like most of London, is currently awash with rapid development threatening the very culture
that defined it. Tension within developing cities is nothing new, but here conflicting forces are
more apparent than most. Oft described as a village by those who live and work within it, its
resilience has been a constant, surviving cholera outbreaks bombings, and numerous attempts to
crackdown on the illicit actives that defined it. Beyond the development hoardings, the Soho of
old fights on, the vibrant and seedy heart of the city, as strong as ever, just not as in your face as
it once was.

Flaneurism 08 - Watch Her Dance to The End of Love (Coney Island in the time of Winter)
Rik Moran 2016 no ISBN Acqn 26207

The boardwalks of Brooklyns most famous leisure destination have stood strong for over 150
years now. Well known for its amusement parks and seaside resort, its long been a favourite
getaway of New Yorkers looking to escape the bustle of the Big Apple. In the mid 60s Fred
Trump, Father of Donald, tried to get a large chunk of the area demolished and rezoned in order
to build luxury apartments, the first of many challenges faced by the park. For over 50 years it
changed ownership numerous times with countless plans for resorts, casinos and apartments
falling along the way. However, in 2011, for the first time in eighty years, a new roller coaster was
built, marking a concerted effort to reverse Coney Islands decline. Currently efforts are afoot to
acquire landmark status for the Boardwalk alongside the three rides already protected, and the
citys planning commission has vowed to preserve, in perpetuity, the open amusement area rides
that everyone knows and loves.
