empty a closet by lining up all the shoes in the hall two by two. He has a set
of toys which have men with hats and each man has his own hat, if a hat gets
misplaced the man is considered "froke" (broken) and oust be put up somewhere
until the hat is found or Zacharie will throw him away. As you can see, we have
to keep a good eye on him.

TWO YEARS IN POITIERS

What has happened over the past two years?

Everything has grown a little.

The

ovagolistic team in Foitisrs went from just us to include The Hansons and Karen

Richardson. Our personal family grew with the birth of Rachelle. The church
family increased with the baptisms of the Kims. Our financial support increased
each year to meet the budget needs.
The city of.Poitiers itself is growing
passing from 100,000 in population to 120,000 this year.
All around the city
there is construction going on.
Due to activities that we have organised or
that we are involved in, we now have a contact group of about 50 people that
some of the team members sees regularly.
We are continuing with our regular
activities, church services, Bible studies, English through Luke, the
correspondence courses, and the activity nights.
Attendance for the church
services continues to be small.
Not including the team members nor the Kim
family, there are about 8 people who come from time to time, but that's 8 more
than we had at the beginning.
Two possible 6 month interns are on the line,

either for this year or next. The Woods, the Blackmores, and Scott Vincent, all

interns from the past, are preparing to return to France and hopefully begin a
new work in one of our targeted cities. As we return home to the States for our
furlough (mid-June through Mid-Sept.), our thoughts are pointed toward the next
two, four, six years. What will have happened then?
Please continue to pray
for our efforts in France and for the people of France.

FURLOUGH NEEDS

We will be staying in Vanceburg, KY and in Zanesville. OH which are my and

Joni's homes. The addresses and phone numbers are listed in this update if you
would like to contact us. We have really only one need for furlough and that is
a vehicle (anything but a compact, since there is now four of us). We would

consider borrowing, renting, or even buying (if the price is right). Please let
us know if you have a vehicle and would be willing to do one of the above.

FURLOIIGH 1969

We vill be in the States this June through this September. I'm not sure who is
ore anxious us or the grand parents. They have not seen Rachelle yet (except
on video) and it has been quite awhile since they've seen Zacharie or us. This

furlough we plan to do a limited

amount of

traveling because the last one was

too much traveling. We hope to see you somewhere along the way. We will have 12

Sundays to visit 35

supporting congregations and

as you can see

this will be

impossible, so we have decided to group some churches together when and where
possible. Even with this method, a few churches are going to be left out, but
they will be the first on the list for the next scheduled furlough. We ask your
patience and understanding on this issue. Thanksi
So if you can't find your
church in the following list, it means you have been grouped with a church on

the list or have been skipped for this time. In either case if we are going to
be somewhere in your area, we would appreciate seeing you.

Dear friends and supporters,

It has been a long time since our last update due to the fact that we were in
the States and saw many of you in person. Then with our return to France,

there was a period of "setting things" in order and catching up to do. So now
that these things are done, we're finally getting around to a new update and
what an update it is.

The summer was really great for our families.

The children really enjoyed the

grand parents and all the aunts, uncles, and cousins as I'm sure they enjoyued
the children.

Both Zacharie and Rachelle are doing fine;

growing too fast as

many of you can identify with. Zacharie goes to school every morning and we
think he is learning to speak French. I say think because he will not speak it
to us

at

home

but the teacher says he is doing just fine.

Experts say that

children will separate the two languages and speak them to those whom he knows

speaks that language. I quess that's what he does??!! Rachelle looks like she
is going to be an early walker and there is none prettier. The separation from
family is what is hardest for us to endure on the field. The rest comes easy in
comparison. Please pray for all concerned as the Christmas season approaches.

During the summer, we had communicated with our co-workers in France and had
learned that a french fellow had shown up one day wanting more information
about the church.
Mike invited him to study the Bible and started a series of
four lessons with him.
I finished the last two upon arrival in France and

Bernard Silve (early 30s) was immersed into Christ in September.!!

The strange

thing about this story is that Bernard came to us because he had received a
correspondance card back in the summer of 1987 - the seed planted then took two
years to mature.
Bernard had kept this simple card all that time. He came to

us at a time of need in his life.

He had lost his job and was on unemployment
at the time. He is also an alcoholic but has that under control, but these two

factors together were becoming too much for him. Had he have not kept our card
he may have gone under or sought help elsewhere. Now, he is in a work program
and gives God the credit for his new life. We have continued a discipleship

Pray for these studies and the people who come.

In October, the church group had a "Fa ith Promise" but not for money - for
bible study invitations. In other words our group of ten Christians committed
to God that they would invite 170 pe|sons to study the Bible personally with
them on a one to one basis or in small groups that we would start.

up but we have found that most will no and one to one is more effective anyway. We pray that of the 170 that some will say yes to the study and eventually
say yes to the Lord. We now have 13 people involved in seven study groups!!!
Please pray for these efforts!!!

Our regular programs are still working except for the English courses.

The Kim family continues to come and Bernard is now always present since he is
no longer working on Sunday.
Mike ha s begun to take more of an active part in

th^servTce^as his French is progressing.

One of the

girls

has

been going

door to door with me each week which h as

been a good experience for both of us.

We mostly find no one home or at least no one comes to the door, but a couple
of times we were invited in and had go od conversations. There is a possibility
that we might be moving right into the center of town. In fact, as soon as we
can find someone to replace us in th e building we are in we will be able to
move. The new building would be in on e of the main market squares of town and
have plenty of parking space.
We wou Id have a room larger than what we have
now plus three smaller rooms ideal for the kids and an office. The rent is some

what higher but all things considered it would be a great move.

Please make
this a top priority in your prayers be cause the building in the center of town
could be gobbled up before we get the opportunity to rent it.

I suppose there's not much else to say for now.

A financial report will follow

in January. We really appreciated the encouragement we got from so many of you

during our visit and we want to express our deepest thanks for the your support

are doing. None of these people seem ready to make any committments but

they are at least responsive in a positive way as opposed to the negativism

what would you think if 5 Arabs moved to your community and started propogating Islam? Little by little, people are coming to understand our purpose
