FROM THE EDITOR.

Hi all
I received this reply from Angie Fitch Tillett when I
reminded her we were awaiting her comments with
regards to the increase of councillor allowance.
I think many readers will agree with me that if all
councillors worked as hard as Angie does, the increase
in allowance would be palatable.
Sorry Liz as you may have seen Ive been fighting a
bug, managed one day then rotten again the next. If its any help, for the
first two weeks of March I did at least 12 hours a day including weekends, then I fell over (not literally).
I have been to Oxford, Westminster, Gt. Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Sea
Palling, missed Chelmsford due to sickness. This in addition to Cabinet
actual and planning meetings, Full Council, Coastal Forum and scrutiny
which I normally do in the round. All of these require pre-agenda
discussions. I think I earned my allowance.
Well dear reader are you with me and in possession of an overflowing
smelly black bin YES I know they sent out a leaflet a few weeks ago and
I read and forgot what it stated, Collection A DAY EARLY!
I received an email on the subject on 15 March far too late for inclusion
in Crab Tales.I think common sense would decree better two days late
and collected than a day early and probably over 30% missed!
I hope you will all come to Trimingham on Sunday for one of our biannual Yards Sale then again the following Sunday for our FUN DOG
SHOW with great BBQ, meat from Tavern Tasty of Swaifield, worth the
drive for one of their delicious burgers
I hope you are all enjoying peaceful Easter break in this beautiful part of
a great country(in or out)!

Liz

Drop off at: K Hardware, Church St. CROMER
Dear Editor,.
Quite recently Ive been rather disappointed
with Crab Tales because I felt there were too
many adverts and not enough newsy bits
Well - what a lovely surprise when I opened
Issue 082 - so many pieces of real interest.
The magazine got off to a really good start with
the piece about plans to introduce on-street
parking in Cromer and Sheringham, plus two
lovely little cartoons at the bottom of the page.
Page 3 produced a brilliant letter from Graham
Jones regarding North Norfolk District Council
and the councillors pay rise, something which
many people are none too happy about.
Its good to read the Mundesley Mumblings
- my very first letter to the Eastern Daily Press
in March 2001 was to do with people not
bothering to clear up after their dogs, and here
we are in 2016 and still having problems.
A young man by the name of Dean Howard
had the unenviable job of clearing dog mess
off Gold Park before the lads could play their
football matches at the week-ends - we no
longer have football matches on the park but
unfortunately we do still have dog owners who
fail to clear up after their pets.

Then on page 8 there was a piece about a Tree

Preservation Order, placed by NNDC, and how
it had been ignored by a company building
houses in Fakenham and subsequently the
company was fined almost 30,000. Such a
pity the district council didnt feel the same
way about the two beautiful North Walsham
Hornbeams which were so unceremoniously
chopped down in November 2013.
Page 13 saw a very good article about work
being done by the North Walsham and Dilham
Canal Trust - next time you cross the little
bridge in Swafield on the road to North
Walsham take a look at all the work being done
there.
And in between these articles all sorts of
snippets of interest to everybody in your
distribution area - I loved the picture of
Michael Gove cleaning for the Queen
I am looking forward to the next issue of Crab
Tales.
Regards.

Chicks Caravan Services

Dear Editor,
Last week myself and two friends mainly
enjoyed walking from Overstrand to
Mundesley following The Paston Way. The
only unenjoyable section was through the
village of Trimingham where you have to walk
on the main road as there is no footpath. The
road is narrow with houses straight onto the
road as you know. Due to the narrowness of
the road traffic was probably moving below the
speed limit of 30mph, nevertheless we felt very
exposed to passing cars and buses.
In the parish news letter you say Walkers are
Welcome. Perhaps the parish should consider
reclaiming space on the road for pedestrians as
has been done on Mundesley High Street.

Beth Narborough. The painting was
unanimously selected from over 250
entries

FELBRIGG ACCIDENT
BLACKSPOT.
HALF A MILLION POUNDS FOR
COMPACT ROUNDABOUT.
For Many years locals to the accident blackspot at the junction
of Holt Road and the road to Felbrigg have campaigned for
improvements to this busy and perplexing junction.
The significant number of serious accidents have led to the
county council agreeing in principal to the building of a
compact roundabout. The staggering cost of 500,000 is largely
being met but a shortfall of 42,000 is being sought by the
campaign.
We, at Crabtales have been asked to publish a letter asking for
pledges which we will happily do. The fear is that the current
offers could be withdrawn if these funds are not found quickly.
Whatever one feels about the cost i am sure we all wish to see
an end to the scenes of serious accident so often visited on this
junction.

ANTINGHAM VILLAGE HALL AGM.

If Delia were here I know what she would say.

Held 15th March 2016, when the past years work including the accounts were
given clear approval subject to audit. The existing committee was thanked for their
hard work over the past year by the Chairman Barry Wigg. The existing committee
was re-elected minus two members, one through ill health and one through family
commitments. Unfortunately only two members of the public turned up at the
hall to listen to the proceedings which caused much
disappointment from the committee, we had expected some
support from the groups which hire our hall on a regular
basis, we will however continue to do our best for the
villagers of Antingham.

BIG SOCIETY 2...THE RESULTS

The Fund announced its latest round of grants last week. There
has also been a flurry of final project delivery across North
Norfolk with three very different projects officially launched.
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of N.N.D.C and Cabinet Member
for Big Society, was asked to open a new play area off Gordon
Road, Melton Constable, on March 19.
In June 2015 a Big Society Fund grant of 5,000 was awarded to
purchase an outdoor table tennis table and accessible birds nest
swing as part of the wider play area project.
On the same day, Cllr FitzPatrick attended the opening of Holt
Pavilion, where a new kitchen, toilets, office and storage with
disabled access plus new changing rooms for players and officials
have been created. The Big Society Fund contributed 10,000 in
2013 towards a six-figure target.
On March 10, Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Deputy Leader at
N.N.D.C launched the North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme
website. In September the scheme was awarded a Big Society
Fund grant enabling the creation of the website as another
channel for contact from volunteers, requests for assistance and
donations, as well as promoting the scheme.
Cllr FitzPatrick said: Its always very satisfying to consider
and agree grant funding applications for local groups doing such
excellent work. But its also incredibly rewarding on a whole
other level to see those hard-working groups deliver the end
result created by the community, for the community.
NNDCs Big Society Fund offers grants of up to 15,000 to
voluntary and community organisations based in North Norfolk.
Since the fund started in 2012, over 1,171,208 has been
awarded to more than 147 community projects.
If you have an idea or a project that you wish to develop and
apply for funding, you are encouraged to speak to your local
councillor and get in touch with the Council (via Sonia Shuter tel.

Being a Trek Doctor

Dr Catherine
Ashworth - BM Dip
Obs, MRCGP
Mundesley Medical
Centre

Amazing people achieve amazing things, often surprising even themselves.

Its seeing this happen, in the moment that makes me sign up as an outdoor expedition doctor over
and over again.Commonly, accompanying medics were previous group participants, inspired by
experiencing exactly that.
My day job is as a GP partner based in North Norfolk; Ive been a GP for 25 years.
Most people on the trips are UK based, have a GP, know what we do day to day and therefore
I feel fortunate enough to get a quick, no barred introduction to a group. Im not complacent
about that trust though; it has to be earned during the time spent together. Happily serious injuries
or a death are rare, and knowing how to manage a patient in an outdoor environment often far
from medical facilities can be challenging.
The support of the UK guides and local crew is invaluable and often there are unsung heroes
within the group who step up immediately to assist. Group psychology plays a huge role, one
individual may require significant medical input and the remainder of the group may be affected
positively by this, but not always!
I did my first trip as a doctor in 2009, toPeru, which was a quick learning curve for practising
altitude medicine and putting physiological theory into practice (and it affects doctors too).
I try and fit in around 6 trips a year, roughly half in the UK, half overseas. I would love to do
more and turn down more opportunities than I can accept, maybe when I retire from the NHS...
Grand Canyon, Chinas Great Wall, Sahara Desert, Mount Kilimanjaro, Nepalese Himalaya,
Transylvania, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Jurassic Coast, South Downs Way, Yorkshire 3 Peaks, Ben
Nevis by day (and occasionally by night) - several places more than once.
I review participants medical history ahead to try to anticipate any problems, but commonly
I expect the unexpected! On the trip I have access to a comprehensive medical kit. I carry a
compact one in my pack and can dispense a variety of prescription only drugs. I also carry the
usual dressings, blisterkit, suturepacks, samsplint, emergency and anaphylaxis medications etc.
My brief is to walk at the back of the group, which allows plenty of time to chat to people and
focus my camera lens on interesting flora, fauna or landscape. Its a different experience when
visiting the same place with a different group, as the people make it. Sometimes the group are all
raising money for the same charity, sometimes fundraising for their individual cause. Theyre not
tourists, sometimes they might wonder, How did I get here, doing this- and thats the special bit.
Often I encounter emotional issues in participants that inevitably occur when people are away
from home, family and friends; however I can be confident that someone else in the group will
often be able to help too; close bonds occur quickly between strangers.
I dont intend to stop accompanying groups as a volunteer doctor anytime soon, its an incentive
to keep fit and I never stop learning, aboutmedicine, human nature andthe environment.

ANYONE FOR CROQUET?

North Norfolk District Council support to croquet club brings
welcome rise in membership
Wells Croquet Club has welcomed 10 new members after an
NNDC support project helped replace equipment and engage a
croquet coach.
A celebration to mark the increase in membership will take place
at Wells Croquet Club on April 14.
Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet member for Leisure and Health said:
The club has always been well-used by holiday makers but
this help from the Council has brought new local blood to the
activity in this lovely village. Its satisfying to see such direct
positive results from our project and to see this sport gain more
enthusiasts.
The club has been going since 1921 and in April last year
NNDC investigated ways to attract more members as part of the
Sports Clubs and Hubs project. The Council engaged a croquet
coach for 40 weeks and promoted the sessions on radio and with
leaflets. There was also a need for new equipment so a donation
of 300 was used to purchase new croquet hammers.(ISNT IT
MALLETS?).
Joint Secretary of Wells Croquet Club Lindsay Dew said: The
cooperation from the District Council has been important,
especially the efforts to publicise the club and the much-needed
donation for new equipment. We now have new members and
this has given us a boost. We want the club to go from strength to
strength.

Racing Greyhounds are finely tuned speed machines. They are often
well looked after and conditioned to be healthy in order to race for their
owners.
If for reason of age, injury or just not being fast enough their racing
careers end the future for these dogs is thrown into doubt. Many owners
love their dogs and look after them regardless of their ability to race but
for some and sadly many their fate is to be neglected or abandoned or
put down.
Dog rescue centres have more than their share of Greyhounds.
Rehousing can be tricky with the cost of their injuries and the perception
of their nature making them long stay residents.
Kerry Greyhounds, specialise in the rehabilitation and rehoming of
unwanted racing Greyhounds. Being experts on the breed means their
health and emotional needs can be better met. In many cases this results
in a loving family pet.
Like all rescue centres Kerry Greyhounds needs the support of the
public.Based in Norfolk and Suffolk there are many ways you can help.
Adopting, fostering or fundraising means there are ways for everyone
to help. They rely on the support of the public to continue their work so
why not pop to their website and see what they do.

CHARITY NIGHT PREPARATIONS

Preparations are now well ahead for the Charity Night Show
on 30th September. Hayley Moss the soprano and Norwich
busker, who gained fame by twice singing in front of 27,000
fans at Norwich City FC games this season, came to Cromer Pier
yesterday to check out the theatre and was given a tour by Deb
Lewis of the Theatre management..
Hayley, whose singing
of Nessun Dorma
enraptured the crowd at
Carrow Road, has agreed
to appear in the Charity
Show together with the
groups Hollowlands,
Tap the Barrel and a
surprise appearance of
another group. Local
comedian Pat Nearney, a hit on the last show will be making a
return appearance.
Hayley, is relatively new to the area, had never been to Cromer
before and said that she was thrilled by the iconic theatre and the
town in general.
The two charities Break and the Benjamin Foundation will share
the proceeds. Tickets are now on sale at the Theatre Box office
and uptake has been brisk. Tickets 12 with 10 for concessions.

Saucepan
versus Soupmaker
A Saucepan versus Soupmaker competition will be one of the highlights of an

upcoming Soup and Pudding evening in Aylsham Town Hall. Organised by Slow Food
Aylsham, the event will invite guests to choose between soup made in the traditional
way and soup made in a new-fangled machine. Local chef Derrol Waller will be on
hand with his saucepan while Slow Foods Jill
Willis will tend the machine. St Georges Day,
23rd April is the date and 7.30pm the start time.
Enough soup will be produced for all guests to
have a bowl full, together with roll and butter.
A selection of dessert puddings will follow,
made by Slow Food Aylsham members, and
accompanied by a choice of custard or cream.
This is certainly an event when the diet is best
left at home!
Chair of Slow Food Aylsham, Mo AndersonDungar, says she is really looking forward to the
event which will mirror one held seven years
ago. Back in 2009, she says, Slow Food
held a very similar event which attracted a large
audience and saw our members come up with
a fabulous selection of puddings. Since then, our Spring event has been a foodie quiz
night but we decided to revisit the Soup and Puddings this year, with the added twist of
the Saucepan versus Soupmaker competition. It should be a great fun evening and we
hope all the family will come along.
Tickets for the evening, which is supported by electrical retailer J B Postle, are just 7,
available in Aylsham from Barnwells Newsagents, Carousel Chocolates or the Market
Place fruit and veg stall. Alternatively, phone the ticket line on 07519 361 812.

CUTTING EDGE PEST CONTROL, THE OLD FASHIONED WAY.

Not many of us like to think too much about pest control. If we do it may conjour images of the janitor from The Brittas Empire or
maybe John Goodman in Arachnophobia. Forget all that and meet Alec Shearer ( i think he looks more like Graham Souness) who
explains how we do things now.
My name is Alec Shearer and I am a professional pest controller of 40 + years,
in that time I have dealt with most of lifes pesky creatures, the days of putting
poison down everywhere is slowly coming to an end, secondary poisoning has
always been a problem, the rodents going off to die and then being eaten by other
creatures including Barn Owls, Kestrels etc.
I deal very little now with the poison side as my main business is controlling
birds and the problems they cause, gulls, pigeons etc.
I have been flying birds of prey from the age of 10, working around the falconry
industry for many years while growing up, I have flown birds at most County &
Country Shows around the U.K and Northern Ireland.
I currently own with my partner Sandy around 22 birds, 14 of those are owls. We
use the owls for educational purposes and visit schools, scouts, brownie groups and retirement homes, to
see the happy smiling faces on the old and the young is worth millions.
Owls can be such a relaxing, calming bird to hold, hand reared from 10 days old, they are more human
than most humans. During the year we usually have at least one owlet that we take everywhere with us to imprint, to make it human
to the point that it thinks it looks like us and therefore not frightened by us.
The Hawks and Falcons we use are parent reared, unlike the owls these are left with the parents for up to 16 -20 weeks. We then
have the task of manning the bird and building up its trust, a process that hasnt changed for 4000 years, the furniture we put on the
bird hasnt changed much in that time either, the anklets that go round the legs, the jesses that go through the anklets, usually made
from leather, the swivel that stops the bird getting tangled and the leash that we tie the bird to its block or bow perch.
Skills have been learned for me over the years that I have honed, skills that Im still learning 50+ years on, woodturning for making
the wooden blocks that the falcons sit on, leather craft, bell making, the list goes on.
My day starts early loading the hawks and falcons into my van, usually four or five, checking them over and talking to them like they
are your children, they respond with cat like purring, a sound that makes me smile.
I am based in Stalham and most of my work is in Norfolk/Suffolk, we arrive at one of the sitesI control and
the gulls start getting anxious and giving their distress calls before the Hawks are in site, they are that clever,
they know me and my van and know Im the one responsible for bringing and flying a predator in their nesting
ground. We are not there to hurt any of them, we are there to deter them from nesting by creating an unsafe
environment to raise their chicks.
I prepare the food for the Hawks which could be chicken, quail, beef that day, then I get the bird from their
transport box and the first thing I do is weigh them, weight is the most important thing in free flying a bird,
weight is controlled by the amount of food you feed, every bird is different, even two of the same species will
fly at different weights. It is something you and you alone has to work out by how the bird is responding, too
light in weight and it will not have the energy to fly, too heavy and it need not come to you because its not
hungry, it can be a matter of ounces depending on the bird your flying, kestrel or a golden eagle.
I write the weight of each bird down before I fly them in my daily diary, if they are lighter than they should be
I will feed more that day to bring them back up to weight. All sounds easy so far doesnt it, but if they fly more than they normally do
or wind is strong and they have to work harder, then they are burning more energy and will need more food, simple yes
This all is natural to me as 50 years is a long time learning, I am a Lantra Falconry Beginners Award administration point and
assessor, Lantra supplies the only government recognised award in falconry and is a good way of learning how to look after and be

14

PEST CONTROL CONT...

competent in flying and maintaining birds of prey.

So the food is done, the bird is weighed, I now remove the jesses
for flying and fit a tag, a transmitter to the bird, although my birds
dont leave me, there is always the chance of getting it back with
a tag fitted, it gives me the direction/location of the bird, without
it where do you look?
Only idiots fly without a transmitter and there are plenty of them
in falconry unfortunately.
So transmitter on and bird is released to fly around the site,
immediately the gulls go into defensive mode, calling and dive
bombing her to try to drive her away, its a natural reaction, they
are protecting their nesting sites, if you had someone come into
your garden you would tell them politely to clear off, the gulls are
not polite but doing the same thing.
Now if she were a wild bird, maybe a buzzard, it would not
tolerate all the diving and would leave the area, my birds have
done this for many years so are not intimidated by them and stand
their ground, the gulls soon get fed up with it and move away or
go very high, calling all the while.
We are on site usually between 2-4 hours daily initially,
especially if its a high pressure site, water
nearby, or on the coast etc. This time gets less
the more we are there as gulls leave quicker
on every visit.
I also remove nests and eggs and rarely take
on a job that I have no access to roofs, by
removing nests and eggs we prevent young
hatching and returning the following year to
nest themselves, we are breaking their cycle
and it does work if done correctly.
Bird control is what I specialise in and that
includes fitting preventive measures such as
bird spikes, wires, bird gel, netting plus the
guano cleaning, well someones got to do it.
I currently fly 5 Harris Hawks and 2 Gyr/Sakers.
Just another day .

CONCERT SEASON AT, ST BOLTOLPHS CHURCH, TRUNCH.

SATURDAY 30th APRIL at 7.30 pm, ICKNIELD ENSEMBLE

Arwen Newband Violin Edmund Booth Violin

Nick Turner Viola
Sarah Boxall Cello
Nick Mason - Double Bass
Anna Le Hair Piano
Frank Bridge: Phantasie Trio no. 1 in C minor
Vaughan Williams: Piano Quintet, Dvork: Piano Quintet, Op. 81
Anna, who has delighted Trunch audiences on many occasions, returns with a fine ensemble to
play two masterpieces embracing the tuneful folk music of Britain and Bohemia.
Frank Bridge was a contemporary of Vaughan Williams and a very fine, if all-too-seldomperformed composer. The young Benjamin Britten found him to be his most inspiring teacher
and they shared a lifelong friendship. Bridge was 28 when he wrote this one-movement
Phantasie Trio, which is full of wonderful melodies and rich and passionate Romantic
exuberance.
Vaughan Williams was 31 when he wrote the piano Quintet. He had already written some of
his famous songs, such as Linden lea and Silent Noon, and it is also full of exuberance and
melody, as befits a composer who was still to write The Lark ascending, Britains favourite
piece of classical music. This wonderful work is not as often performed as it should be, due to
its unusual scoring.
Dvoraks Piano Quintet is one of the finest pieces of Romantic chamber music, imbued with
the spirit of the famous New World Symphony and lively Czech folk music.
Some biographical notes about the performers appear below. Admission to the concert is by
programme, 10 (8 concessions). Programmes can be bought at the door from 40 minutes
before the start of the concert. Proceeds are for the on-going restoration projects of St
Botolphs Church, a wonderful ambience for music-making. Thank you to events editors for
supporting us with publicity for this event. Pictures and further information can be sourced by
return email or from our website: http://www.trunchconcerts.co.uk/.
We look forward to welcoming you at this lovely concert,
