NURS 360 PMH Reflection
Week #6

I have learned many valuable skills and knowledge throughout the nursing program from
the mental health courses. I have learned how to use therapeutic communication while
interacting and assessing my patients and their families. Learning about non-verbal language and
utilizing it in the way I present myself and noticing it in my clients gives me a greater insight as
to how they are feeling without verbalizing it. I have also learned about different disorders,
manifestations, and the medications that are used to treat it, along with the side effects,
complications and importance of compliance and not stopping it abruptly. Learning about
addiction, withdrawal, and the 12 step process was also a great learning experience. I was able to
hear firsthand from people how it impacted their lives and how using the 12 step program helped
them find support and sobriety. I also feel more confident in asking difficult questions that are
vital in maintaining my patients safety and well-being and recognizing signs and symptoms of
disorders by observing their behaviors and listening deeper to the content of our dialogue more
intently.
I have had the opportunity to practice my communication and critical thinking skills in
the clinical setting, River of Life, and Club house and the take home message is that all patients
that I will encounter from children to adults, have emotional needs regardless of type of
ethnicity, gender, age, religion, culture, or socioeconomic class. Providing resources that are
available in the community promote continued support and guidance that will also benefit the

patients wellbeing. Addressing their needs and care with a holistic approach that incorporates
their medical needs and mental wellness, will be more beneficial to the patient and will make me
a better nurse.
Using the knowledge and experiences that I have acquired and applying it in my future
clinical rotations and nursing career will give me the ability to communicate effectively and
therapeutically, recognize mental illness and provide the necessary support and referrals for the
patient to improve their overall wellness. I can also continue to use what I have learned in my
everyday life while interacting with my family, friends, and co-workers. Being aware of my own
non-verbal language and the non-verbal language of others gives me a better insight as to how I
may be received and what they are feeling.
Professor Debbie,
Thank you for all the time, effort, and knowledge you have invested in me. It was a great
learning experience and I appreciate everything and wish you the best in your future!
Aloha,
Christine Rombawa
