OBJECTIVES

Integration of Distance Learning with classroom teaching in a
conventional medical school.
To integrate the principles and practice of Distance Learning (DL) in
conventional classroom teaching. The major focus of this intervention
will be on training the faculty to be able to write for DL, distance
teaching, academic counseling and student support systems.
The proposed intervention banks a lot on training of the faculty to enable
it to acquire a new role, which is substantially different from that of a
conventional medical teacher.
Train the faculty of a conventional medical school in distance learning
techniques.
Enable the faculty to produce self-instructional materials (SIM)
Enlarge the role of faculty from information provider to a manager of
students' learning needs.
Encourage research in DL in the field of medicine.

METHODS

Orientation of the faculty to DL by a series of 3-day interactive

workshops covering principles and methodology of DL, production of
SIMs, distance teaching academic counseling and evaluation techniques
This will be done by plenary sessions, group discussions, written
materials, role plays and assignments.
After an initial exposure to the entire faculty covering the pre-clinical
departments, a core group of people will be identified who will be willing
to write SIMs in their own subject areas. In addition, people will also be
identified who can conduct such workshops for faculty from other
departments.
SIMs will be produced on a time bound basis and will be given a trail run
after an initial approval by the subject experts. They will be evaluated for
their pedagogical utility.
Academic counseling cell will also be created in the institution to address
the academic concerns of the students, with special reference to their
learning needs

EVALUATION
PLANS

The program will run parallel to the conventional teaching program.

Students will take the usual formative and summative tests with the
added input of academic counseling after each test. An additional
component of evaluation will be the attitudinal change. The internal
assessment protocol already in use will be modified to provide certain
additional information on this aspect. The students will also be requested
to provide feedback as detailed above.
