1.0 Introduction
1.1 Description
The Model 2210 TLD Irradiator uses a
rotating disk to irradiate a number of
thermoluminescent ( TL) elements
simultaneously in the form of chips, rods,
micro-cubes, disks, and cards. The unit is
portable and designed for benchtop mounting
(Figure 1).
The Model 2210 is available in two
strengths, distinguishable on the label on the
back (Figure 2). The units made in Germany
have a 33 MBq (0.9 mCi) 90Sr/90Y source, and
those made in the United States have a 18
MBq (0.5 mCi) 90Sr/90Y source. All units
produced in Germany are calibrated before
delivery and are supplied with a Certificate of
Calibration. Calibration is available as an
option on units produced in the U.S.
The TL samples are placed in the recesses
on the periphery of a disk. As the disk rotates,
the samples move into and out of the

irradiation beam. The number of revolutions

is pre-set by the operator. The Model 2210
Irradiator will accept disks from Models
2000D and 5500 Readers in a variety of
configurations.
The front panel includes status lights for
Power and Shutter, a Start Button, a Drawer
with a rotating Drive Platter for the sample
Disk, and a revolutions setting/counting
mechanism with a display panel. The rear
panel (Figure 2) includes an On/Off Switch,
power cord receptacle, Voltage Selection
switch, fuse panel and cooling fan.
CAUTION: This irradiator contains a
radioactive source! Do not attempt to
detach, move, repair or service any
component of the irradiator assembly. If
service is needed, contact Thermo Electron
Corporation RM&P.

1.0 Introduction (cont'd)

1.2 Indicators and Controls
Power Switch
Located on the back of the Irradiator, this
switch controls the power to all functions
except the counter.
Power Light
This front panel light is green when there
is power available at the power input panel
and the Power Switch is turned on.
Shutter Light
This front panel may be green, orange, or
off. If it is green, the Platter is in the zero
position, the source shutter is closed, and the
Irradiator is ready to begin a new cycle.
If the Power Light is on and the Shutter
Light is off, the Platter is not in the zero
position (that is, the drive pin is not opposite
the proximity sensor). You should not start
irradiating under these conditions as not all
dosimeter positions will get the same
exposure. Before starting an irradiation,
remove the Disk, set the counter to one
revolution, and press the Start Button. The
Platter will rotate to the zero position and
stop. You may then insert the Disk and start
irradiating.
The Shutter Light will turn an orange
color when the Shutter is open. In a normal
irradiation cycle, when you press the Start
Button, the Shutter opens, the Platter starts to
rotate, and the Shutter Light turns to orange.
When the pre-set number of rotations has been
completed, the Shutter will close, the Platter
will stop rotating, the Shutter Light will turn
green, and the sounder will be activated.
If the Power Light is off, this light will be
off.

Counter Panel
This panel consists of a small electroluminescent screen and an array of buttons. The
screen displays a large (8 mm) number that
shows the number of revolutions that have
been completed in the current cycle. Below
that number is a small (3 mm) number that
shows the number of revolutions yet to be
completed for the desired exposure. The large
number increments as the Platter turns; when
the upper number is equal to the lower
number, the cycle is complete.
There are two rows of buttons at the
bottom of the panel. The upper row consists
of six buttons, each representing one of the six
digits in the number of revolutions to which
the counter can be set. Pressing one of these
buttons will increase the corres-ponding digit
by one number. Pressing the leftmost button,
for example, would set the Irradiator for
100,000 revolutions.
The left button in the bottom row is the
Reset Button. This is used to reset the large
number to 0. It is also used at the end of the
cycle to turn off the sounder. If it is pressed
during an irradiation cycle, it will set the large
number to 0, which will begin the irradiation
cycle over again.
The two right buttons in the lower row
are locked in position and not functional in
this application.
Sample Drawer
The disk containing the dosimeters to be
irradiated is placed in this drawer on the Drive
Platter with the drive notch in the disk placed
over the drive pin on the Platter. There is a
safety interlock so that an Irradiation cycle
cannot be started with the Drawer open.
Similarly, if the Drawer is opened during an
Irradiation Cycle, the Platter will stop rotating
and the Shutter will close. When the Drawer
is subsequently closed, you must press the
Start Button to restart irradiation. The counter
will continue from where it was stopped.

3.0 Operation
If your Model 2210 Irradiator was
delivered in an uncalibrated condition, you
may wish to calibrate it according as
described in Section 4.0 Calibration before
proceeding with the following instructions.
This section assumes that you are using a
calibrated Irradiator.
The procedure for irradiating a set of
dosimeters to a known exposure is as follows:
1.

Divide the desired exposure by the

exposure per revolution to get the
required number of revolutions.

2.

Set the desired number of revolutions on

the counter by pressing the small buttons
under each of the six digits. As you press
a button, the number in the corresponding
position will increment by 1.

3a. Chips: Place the samples to be irradiated

in the holes around the periphery of the
disk. Place no more than one TL element
in each hole. It is not necessary to fill all
the holes nor is it necessary that the
occupied holes be adjacent to each other.
NOTE: Handle TL elements only with
mechanical or vacuum tweezers; do not
touch them with your fingers. The use of
vacuum tweezers is recommended in
order to reduce the risk of damage to TL
elements.
3b. Cards: Place the cards to be irradiated in
the recesses around the periphery of the
disk. Place no more than one TL Card in
each recess. It is not necessary to fill all
the recesses nor is it necessary that the
occupied recesses be adjacent to each
other.

4.

Pull the drawer open and insert the disk,

being careful to align the center hole on
the spindle and to place the drive pin on
the Platter in the notch on the outer rim of
the disk (Figure 4). Close the drawer.

5.

Press the Start Button. The yellow

Shutter Light should come on
immediately and stay on until the
irradiation is completed. As the Platter
rotates, the upper row of numbers will
increment, showing the number of
revolutions completed.

6.

If you pull out the drawer while

irradiation is in process, the Platter will
stop rotating and the Shutter Light will
go out as the Shutter closes and rotation
stops. To restart, simply push the Drawer
back in and press the Start Button. The
irradiation will begin again from the
point where it was stopped.

7.

When the required number of revolutions

is completed, the Shutter Light will go
out and a sounder will be activated. Press
the Reset Button on the Counter panel to
silence the sounder. You may now open
the Drawer and remove the disk.

8.

Card irradiation only: Remove the

Cards from the Disk; turn each card
around in its recess and repeat steps 4
through 7. This is necessary because
only the two TL elements nearest the
periphery of the disk are irradiated.

4.0 Calibration
4.1 Chips
This section describes a procedure that
you may use to calibrate the Model 2210
Irradiator to a traceable calibration source
using unmounted TLD Chips.
These
instructions require either a Harshaw Model
5500 Automated TLD Reader, a Harshaw
Model 4500 Manual TLD Reader, or a
Harshaw Model 3500 Manual TLD Reader.
1.
2.

5.

Calculate the read minus reread value for

each dosimeter.

6.

Prepare the five dosimeters again by

reading them twice.

7.

Expose the dosimeters in a calibrated

source to a value of approximately 100
mR. Keep the time period between
preparation and exposure (Steps 6 and 7)
the same as between Steps 1 and 3 to
reduce fading effects.

8.

Read and reread the dosimeters. Keep

the time period between exposure and
read (Steps 7 and 8) the same as between
Steps 3 and 4 to reduce fading effects.

9.

Subtract the reread values from the read

values.

Prepare five dosimeters by reading them

twice.
Place the five dosimeters at Positions 9,
18, 27, 36, and 45 in the Dosimeter
Carrier. (Important: If you are using a
Model 5500 Reader, do not remove the
dosimeters from the Carrier Disk until the
entire calibration process is completed. If
your reader is a Model 3500 or a Model
4500, you will have to remove the
dosimeters from the disk to read them; be
sure to replace them in the same positions
in the Carrier Disk each time they are
irradiated.)

3.

Expose the five dosimeters for 100

revolutions in the Model 2210 Irradiator
being calibrated. Keep the time period
between preparation and exposure (Steps
1 and 3) constant to reduce fading effects.

4.

Read and reread the dosimeters and

record both readings for each dosimeter.
Keep the time period between exposure
and read (Steps 3 and 4) constant to
reduce fading effects.

10. Calculate the Conversion Factor for each

dosimeter by dividing the calibrated
exposure (Step 7) by the response (read
minus reread, Step 9).
11. Multiply the mean response (read minus
reread, Step 5) by the Conversion Factor
(Step 10) for each dosimeter to get the
exposure values. Then compute the mean
exposure.
12. Divide the exposure by the number of
revolutions (100) to get the exposure rate
(exposure per revolution).

4.0 Calibration (contd)

4.2 Cards
This section describes a procedure that
you may use to calibrate the Model 2210
Irradiator to a traceable calibration source
using TLD Cards. These instructions require
either a Harshaw Model 4500 Manual TLD
Reader, a Harshaw Model 6600 Automated
TLD Reader, or a Harshaw Model 8800
Automated TLD Reader.
1.
2.

3.

4.

Prepare five Cards by reading them

twice.
Place the five Cards in the five recesses
in the Dosimeter Carrier. Orient the
cards with the barcodes facing up and
with elements i and iv toward the
periphery of the disk (that is, with the
notched corner toward the center of the
disk).
Expose the five Cards for 100 revolutions
in the Model 2210 Irradiator being
calibrated. Keep the time period between
preparation and exposure (Steps 1 and 3)
constant to reduce fading effects. Note
that this will expose only the two TL
elements nearest the periphery of the
Disk. Only these two elements (i and iv)
will be used in the calibration process.
Read and reread the Cards and record
both readings for each of the exposed TL
element. Keep the time period between
exposure and read (Steps 3 and 4)
constant to reduce fading effects.

5.

Calculate the read minus reread value for

each exposed element on each Card.

6.

Prepare the five Cards again by reading

them twice.

7.

Expose the Cards in a calibrated source to

a value of approximately 500 mR. Keep
the time period between preparation and
exposure (Steps 6 and 7) the same as
between Steps 1 and 3 to reduce the
difference in fading effects.

8.

Read and reread the dosimeters. Keep

the time period between exposure and
read (Steps 7 and 8) the same as between
Steps 3 and 4 to reduce fading effects.

9.

Subtract the reread values from the read

values for the exposed TL elements.

10. Calculate the Conversion Factor for each

exposed element on each Card by
dividing the calibrated exposure (Step 7)
by the response (read minus reread, Step
9).
11. Multiply the mean response (read minus
reread, Step 5) by the Conversion Factor
(Step 10) for each exposed element on
each Card to get the exposure values.
Then compute the mean exposure for all
10 TL elements.
12. Divide the exposure by the number of
revolutions (100) to get the exposure rate
(exposure per revolution).

6.0 Leak Test

This section describes the leak tests
needed for the United States, Canada, and all
other countries.

Procedure
1. Complete the Leak Test Data Form,
supplied with the Leak Test Kit, in a clear
and legible manner.

Safety Precautions
1. Do not attempt to remove the 90Sr Sealed
Source Capsule from its stored position
in the Shielded Source Housing.

2.

Turn power off (switch is on rear panel).

3.

Open the drawer. Remove the disk, if

one is present, and remove any loose
chips.

4.

Remove the plastic-and-cotton swab

insert from the labeled plastic tube.
Dampen the cotton tip with water.

5.

Carefully wipe the surface of the disk

support plate that is to the right of the
alignment pin.

6.

Immediately following the wiping

procedure, place the swab insert into the
labeled plastic tube and replace the cap
securely. Avoid letting the cotton tip
touch the body or other objects.

7.

The 2210 can now be turned on and

returned to service.

8.

Enclose the leak test data form and the

sealed plastic tube into the supplied
mailing container.

9.

Forward the Leak Test Kit to the vendor.

The vendor will provide you with a Leak
Test Certificate for documentation of the
results.

2.

Do not touch or handle the tip of the

cotton swab (or other collecting device)
used in collecting the leak test sample.

3.

Do not allow the collecting device to

come in contact with the external
surfaces of the container used to return
the sample for analysis.

6.1 United States Leak Test

In compliance with the U. S. Nuclear
Regulatory Commission (NRC), you are
required to test the Irradiator for leakage of
radioactive material. This is accomplished by
a wipe test, which is sufficiently sensitive to
detect 0.005 microcuries of radioactivity.
If you do not have provisions for wipe
testing, you may order a kit from a supplier,
such as:
Applied Health Physics
2986 Industrial Blvd.
Bethel Park, PA 15102
412/563-2242
After receiving a kit, including
instructions, from the supplier, perform wipe
test, and return the sample to the supplier for
evaluation. Upon request, most services will
provide a timely reminder as needed to
perform the wipe test.
The following
instructions assume that you have obtained
such a kit.

WARNING: Should analysis of the leak test

sample indicate that the sealed source is
leaking, you will receive immediate
notification from the leak test vendor. At
that point it will be necessary for you to
suspend operation of the device, restrict
access to the device area, and notify a
competent authority.

6.0 Leak Test (contd)

6.2 Canadian Leak Test
It is the user's responsibility to comply
with the requirements of the AECB (Atomic
Energy Control Board) Requirements for Leak
Testing Selected Sealed Radiation Sources, R116. This is accomplished by a wipe test and
must be sufficiently sensitive to detect 200 Bq
(0.005 Ci) or less of an isotope of interest.
Prepare the leak test in accordance with
AECB R-116. The leak check shall be
performed only by persons properly trained in
working with radioactive prescribed sources
and informed of the hazards involved and
allowed to handle radioactive prescribed
substances. The swab must be analyzed by an
agency approved by the AECB.
As a minimum, we suggest the test
location and procedure described in Section
6.1.2 Procedure.
WARNING: Should analysis of the leak test
sample indicate that the sealed source is
leaking, suspend operation of the device,
restrict access to the device area, and notify
a competent authority.

6.3 Leak Testing in Other Countries

Leak testing shall be done in accordance
with the regulations of the local atomic energy
or nuclear regulatory agency. Leak testing
will normally include certificates of
performance and acceptance and shall be done
on a regularly scheduled basis. It is the user's
responsibility to determine and meet these
requirements. For information needed beyond
what is provided in this manual, please
contact your Thermo Electron Corporation
RM&P representative.
