The Pride Survey, Na7onally


One of the largest surveys of adolescent drug
usage. First started in 1982.
U7lized by thousands of school systems across
the U.S. and 6 other countries.
Undergone extensive reviews on reliability and
validity by independent evaluators
Administered in Fauquier County in 1990, 1993,
1997, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2015
The Na7onal Standard (H.R. 4328 Div. C Title VII Sec. 706 (a)(4)

Chronic Drug Use


Frequent usage indicates increase chance of
addic7on
Chronic use realigns a persons priori7es and also
alters key brain areas necessary for judgement
and self control thus increases risky behavior.
Youth are less likely than adults to think they
need treatment.
Only 10% of the 12-17 year olds needing SUD
treatment actually received any services.(NIDA)

health issues.
In middle and upper income communi7es, rates of
depression, delinquency, substance abuse and
anxiety.appear to be considerably higher in these
communi7es.
Report also states that there are high rates mental
illness in high schools and record rates of u7liza7on of
mental health services on college campuses.
Due in part to an obsessive focus on achievement.

Good News, overall drug use is down from
2009.
Youth report that cigareaes and alcohol are
harmful to their health, consequently, their
usage is low.
Youth report that marijuana is less dangerous
than alcohol, consequently, marijuana usage
is above the na7onal average.

Ac7on Plan
Decrease S7gma by increasing awareness that youth are at
risk of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders.
Improve iden7ca7on of youth with MH and SU Disorders
and increase access and availability of treatment services.
Support parents in providing a drug free home through
support, educa7on, informa7on and where to go if their child
has a problem.
Schools should iden7fy and provide evidence based
preven7on programs for youth who have co-occuring MH and
SA issues. Focus should be on early interven7on.

Survey Purpose
The purpose is to assist communi7es in conduc7ng quality
surveys of :
students prevalence and pa^erns of drug and alcohol
use.
violence and threatening behaviors have been added
over the years.
We added a few mental health ques5ons that were veaed
by PRIDE.
Snapshot of key indicators of adolescent drug and alcohol
use by students aaending Fauquier County Schools in
October 2015.
We compare present indicators to past Fauquier surveys and
recent na5onal sta5s5cs.
Most of the sta7s7cs in report are from PRIDE, also from
Na7onal Council on Behavioral Health, SAMHSA, and NIDA,
MHFA, NIH
The complete survey is available through CADRE for more

Major cause of emphysema, chronic bronchi7s, lung cancer, heart
disease, cancer of the mouth
Increased risk to women who take birth control pills
