Church which is hosting a spaghetti
dinner to benefit the Meals on Wheels
Program at the Mecosta Senior Center
from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
May 26.
The cost is $8 for adults; $3 for
children ages 6 to 12; and free to
children under 5 and younger. Take
out dinners will also be available that
night. There is supplemental funding
from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
for this benefit dinner.

■ An AARP Driver Safety Program
will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30
p.m. on May 11 and 13 at the Mecosta
County Commission on Aging in
Mecosta.
The classroom course helps older
drivers become more aware of the
changes in vision, hearing and reaction
time due to aging and how to adjust
driving accordingly.
There are no tests. The class is
taught in two, four-hour sessions over
a two-day period. The course reviews
basic rules of the road and the typical
types of violations that occur with older
drivers, such as failure to yield the right-
of-way, improper left turns and entering
and exiting expressways. Tips are given
to improve these situations.
The state of Michigan passed legisla-
tion encouraging auto-insurance com-
panies to grant seniors (50 years and
older) a discount on their auto insur-
ance payment for successfully complet-
ing a qualified course in driver safety.

Orbs
Some of you may have noticed those “artifacts” in your digital photographs. Usually they
are round, white spheres. I first noticed them when we traveled to Egypt. Some of the flash
pictures had these orbs in them. I disregarded these things initially as dust particles on the www.pioneergroup.com
lens.
Lately, however, we have become aware of some research that shows that these orbs may
actually be more significant. It seems that the now popular digital cameras, especially the
cheaper ones, are able to record some infra-red light. The better cameras have infra-red filters
and often the orbs are not seen with them. The theory is that light from the flash is absorbed
by the orb, then accelerated within the orb and spit back out at a different wavelength. This
is called fluorescence, much like the “glow in the dark” items we are familiar with. Our pet of the week this
